Very informative. i have two codes on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee, 0440 and 0456. Check engine light and check gas cap light both came on :( Its not the gas cap I will check for the purge valve next, so frustrating.

I have a 2004 Dakota 4.7. Nobody seems to say where each hose go to. I bought this truck used and not sure if they messed with the EVAP system. The diagrams I look at, look cartoonish. Not sure how accurate they are, because some forums I’ve read say the opposite. The hose that comes out of the throttle body, does it go to the top outlet of the purge valve or the bottom?

Figuring out my issue got a 05 ram 1500 Hemi throwing code P0440 and when I fill up at a gas station the pump clicks off unless i press the handle lightly or else it comes back up to the filler neck and clicks the pump off

You forgot to mention that the rubber that goes from the cap to the tank could also be bad

Hello I'm here for some help, got this code P0440. im not sure if my vehicle got two (03 dodge ram) I already replaced the purge valve and still got the same code. So i just wondering if anyone can help please thank you

2004 Dodge Grand Caravan: (1) replaced gas cap (2) replaced purge solenoid in the engine bay (3) smoke test shows no leaks (4) changed Leak Detection Pump aka NVLD aka Vent Vapor solenoid. Still P0440 showing. , could it be charcoal cannister?

Did you clear the code with a scan tool or remove the battery cables? Sometimes the code won't clear on its own. Otherwise, it likely is the charcoal canister.

@@HVAC_Mechanic yes, cleared the code each time and drove 100 miles to reinitiate the code and code came back each time. Just took to another shop this morning and they said could be the computer and take it to the official Dodge dealership - that is going to be super expensive.

@@maketaco6683 My Toyota Avalon have P0440 code & I already spent $800 for replacing the Gas Cap, Charcoal Canister and Purge Solenoid. It is still no LUCK. I think I am going to buy a Smoke machine from Ebay & see if I can locate the leaking hose. Too much money if send car to Shop to looking for (fix) this Error Code (P0440).

@@oy8717 took my van to a different shop, found out the other shop installed the NVLD backwards! The new shop re-installed correctly and the warning light is gone now, but still had to drive at 55mpp and stop (see other YT videos about proper drive cycles - very important). Charcoal cannister should be the LAST thing to change since they last 200,000 miles.

If you really do end up needing a new ECM, get it from ecmrebuilders. It's pretty common for the Dodge to need one, really. Sometimes you can find a good one at a U-pull-it, but I got one from them for my 2005 Ram, very happy with it.

Durangos don’t have a gas cap so could a broken door cause this too?

Yes, the new capless systems need to seal the same as an old gas cap

I have replaced my whole system. Only thing left is the lines. i STILL have an evap code. I was getting p0455, then p0456, then 457. Now after replacing my fuel filler neck I'm getting p0440. The code keeps bouncing around but all the codes are the same thing, an evap system problem. I'm getting so tired of this I'm about to just leave it be. Just clear the code and get it inspected. because ironically it passes inspection if I clear the engine light. Which tells me there is nothing wrong with the system so why am I getting these codes?

@@1989purry I think I may have found the issue. I believe the vent tube running from the top of the filler neck over to the top of the tank has a clog in it. Unfortunately if i cannot get that unclogged the tank will need to be dropped. The valve running into the top of the tank is, I believe, built into the tank. So, that means a possible tank replacement and I'm not doing that so the damn thing can give me a light for another 2 years and then emissions is dropped on this car. But check that line. If you cannot blow air through it you have the same issue.

Question. Would all this cause the car to stop starting? Thats the only code I get, and the car stopped starting.

This code will not cause a no start, just not pass emissions.

Maybe it is your purge valve. And after pumping gas did the car stop? It could be that it created an excess of fuel, too much fuel and not much air.
