Cavalier Colors: The Tricolor

Breeder/judge explains what a Tricolor Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is, as laid out by the Breed Standard.

My tricolor is full of "faults;" half his muzzle is brown while the other half has a big brown spot (his Cindy Crawford mole, I call it). He has a black stripe on one leg and lots of brown spots on his legs. I LOVE this about him. He looks unique and is perfect to me; I like that he looks different than other tricolors! He's not a show dog, so as a pet, he looks absolutely perfect.

In my eyes, Apple is perfect. She is such a beautiful tri-color. Last week I had to put down my 14 year old tri-color girl Madison. She looked a lot like Apple. Apple has such a great personality with beautiful expressions. I have always been partial to tri-color Cavies. Thank you for sharing her with us.

It's nice to see you and Apple. My Bandit wad a tri color. I named him Bandit because it looked like he was wearing a mask. He had a little brown on the muzzle so he didn't meet the breed standard. But his personality made up for it. Bandit went to heaven 2 years ago. He was 11. I bought Chester my ruby. He is a hoot too. I just love ❤️ the cavilier breed. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Our Daisy Mae is a fine example of a Tri Color… at least in my opinion

My tri colour cavalier is "mismarked" as his back is entirely black with no white patches, and his face is completely black and tan, no white blaze. His chest, stomach and legs are all white though. Its actually one of the reasons I picked him out of the litter - he looks very unique! I dont show my dogs so their markings don't matter to me personally. He's full of character and I love him just as he is

hello there! thank you so much for doing this video. I was excited to see it in my playlist as I had made a special request from you to review the tricolor color on the Cavaliers! I learned today about the black hair growing in more vigorously than the white …which explains why up until three months old our girl had the sweetest queens kiss shaped perfectly as a heart (so happy I captured it on some photos) but as I’ve learned from you now why the black hair from the queens kiss grew into the side where the black is on the top of her head and ears, she does have ticking on her muzzle which I consider her beauty marks…but now know are faults Charlotte is now 5 and half months old…she is a pet and just beautiful to us💕 We love your videos and Charlotte and I watch them together….we are fans! Wow I didn’t realize Apple is already 2. She certainly has grown into a beautiful dog. Her face is so adorable. I didn’t realize how specific characteristics dog competitions want in the dogs. Very interesting.

I love all colours, cannot decide. I will just pick one. I have heard that the character is dependent on the colour. Maybe it was just an impression of people. That some lookes more sweet. Apple is sweet one!

She is now 2. We'll be health-testing her for inherited diseases soon, and she might be bred this winter if she passes everything.

Are those few little freckles truly considered a fault? Is that only for tri or also Blenheim? My understanding is that a few random spots are acceptable, after all it's the ticking gene that allows for the prized thumbprint on the Blenheim. My understanding is that it becomes a faul when it is excessive or prominent like is seen in many other spaniels or pointing dogs. Or is it the location on the face that makes it a fault? Apple is a lovely girl, I hope a judge wouldn't fault her for a few freckles.

The Breed Standard states that "heavy ticking" is considered a fault, so it's really quite subjective when the dog is being shown. I've found that it becomes a deciding factor if the judge is trying to make a final decision between 2 dogs he/she likes.

I've had many "perfect" dogs through the years--and I've found the more "perfect" they are, the more I love them. There was my "perfect" blind Great Dane (she wasn't an "acceptable" color, she had one blue eye and one green eye; she was deaf in one ear as well as totally blind), now I have a "perfect" Havanese (he's blind in his right eye, his left rear leg is shorter than his other legs--he walks normally, but when he runs, he picks up that left rear leg and runs like a tripod, he had a number of congenital issues when we got him and he's just my baby boy). I don't think any of my dogs would ever make it in the show ring, but I love them anyway.

thank you so very much for doing this video as I specifically requested it from you! My 5 month old tricolor cav’s markings have changed since I got her….she is beautiful and has that very soft sweet look to her….her “queen’s kiss” was a perfect heart shape black on her white blaze up until 3 months…it has rounded and blended into the black on either side …so happy I have great pics as it was (and still is) adorable💕 She did have an all white face but has developed some ticking…I call them her beauty marks…I wondered if they were considered faults…now I know they are. She has the white blaze which has narrowed she has the tan in all the places you mentioned….Her legs, belly, chest are all white….I did look up what was desired before I chose my pup…I,didn’t realize their markings would change over time but she is a pet and perfect to me.
