No bobbing heads, no toilet squating, no goofy dance moves...just in your face drumming.

I see nothing in this video that comes even close to the chops in drumlines like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqPFhoWnmdunbrM That's not to say that 90 Cavies weren't badass (they were), but top drumlines today play things that would've challenged most I&E champs of the 80s and 90s.

@@Herodotus77 I get your point, but this is like saying the iPhone 14 is better than the original iPhone. Comparing one era to another is missing the context. For this era, this drum solo was highly innovative. Few drumlines were doing complex cross patterns in the quads (none had done a 32-note single while sticks were crossed) nor offbeat polyrhythms.Time machines don't exist.

@@evanspaulding4459 I agree (though I'd say that the BD's tenors from the same year were playing at the same level). I was responding to the OP's insinuation that drumlines today are just dancing around and not playing any "in your face" beats.

@Herodotus77 I think Boston has a great drumline, probably my favorite one in 2022 and 2023. The stuff they play is amazing! However-I’d like to see them featured in their actual show in more of an old school way - like 89/90 Cavaliers.

@@danielsaeger7303 oh ya i totally agree lol back in the day I marched Nite Express and we had a solid line. The percussion director was Eric Johnson and our snare tech was Mike McIntosh who has been with the Cavi’s for awhile now. Those were the days

I remember when drum corps used to be about marching. It's all a bunch of choir theater kids nows.

Ya nowadays there are lots of choir singing and synthesizers. I personally like the old marching styles from 89-95

Definitely cool, but it was almost exactly the same feature they did the previous year. Same drum and brass music, almost the same drill. Wouldn't that feel kinda weak just digging into the hamper for yesterday's jeans? Same thing with 1989 SCV winning with Phantom of the Opera the second consecutive year they played it.

You forgot Madison Scouts City of Angels '91 and '92. The beginning of this show, as well as the very end, play homage to the year before, and the following year has glaring similarities to this show. This is nearing the end of the era of corps repeating pieces from year to year, and I don't just mean the Cadets' obsession with Bernstein.

The problem with your argument is that they actually improved on the show from the year before. I remember both of these seasons and watching these shows. We didn't have internet back then, so you didn't get to see shows a million times like you do today. I loved this show because I was like, "Hey, I remember this! This is so much better!" Still love that 89' show, of course, but this one was just better imo, mainly more fluid movement in the drill. Steve Brubaker is a genius. Both 89' and 90' Cavies shows are classics, imo

@SMeade-qo5uj Many corps did back to back years with drum solos back then. Bridgemen did Cochocia (I know it's spelled wrong) in 78 and 79, also Pursuit of the Lady in the Feathered Hat 80 and 81. Devils did Paradox in 82, 83. Madison did Downwind 81, 82.
