@joncrow32282 жыл бұрын
Well, these places can be safe enough… IF you have the proper training and equipment. Cowboy didn’t, and nearly paid with his life (GLAD he survived!). @Dive Talk goes into a lot more detail regarding all of the cave diving rules he broke and just how lucky he is to be alive. It’s worth checking out if you’re interested in that aspect of the story, or just cave diving in general.
@5stargrim2 жыл бұрын
It’s unfortunate, but even one person managing it gives many the mistaken impression that it’s safe, easier than it is, or even easy. It’s obviously not. But the average IQ isn’t actually that high across the world, and even some of the “smart” ones become arrogant or complacent. Overconfident. And make simple mistakes they wouldn’t have earlier in life. Then, sometimes, even when you do everything right, the smallest thing going wrong can ruin everything. The simple fact is that it is not and never will be safe to explore our limits against the earth like this, and even the absolute best can and will die to their own mistakes eventually. You can have 500 cave dives under your belt, but that doesn’t mean 501 isn’t going to be your last.

@@fluffybunny7089 Makes you wonder how dull lives of "smart people" are. Imagine just avoiding all risks in life. Man that's boring. Life isn't about who gots the most wealth or who became the oldest. It's literally in the end just about you and you doing what you like and love. Be it working as a developer from home your whole life and not doing anything else. To someone climbing mountains and diving. To be fair I just feel like many people miss out on really cool stuff by being risk adverse. Ofcourse doing stupid shit is stupid. But diving with proper knowledge and equipment although more dangerous than many other activities. Is still "safe". I like to visit old abandoned buildings. Also really high buildings like steel factories. And I'm very aware that if you're unlucky something can break. But chances are so low. It's worth the risk for me. And maybe it also dials in to be okay with dying. For me I've never been afraid of dying and I'm now 25. I just don't see a reason to be afraid. My life's been good and fun. And if I die now doing something like? Fine. Well that's it for my little story/rant. Maybe someone can have some inspiration from it, or not haha. Oh and profesional/technical(below 40m's and enclosed spaces) cave diving is actually quite dificult. So imagine it's(IQ) actually quite high. Funny right? It's like people enjoy living or something.

In general it means you're surrounded on four sides and have to navigate somewhat. But AFAIK there are many cave systems in which the tunnels are pretty wide (20 feet or more) which significantly alleviates the dangers of silting or getting stuck. *Those* cave systems I would really enjoy diving in. Peaceful solitude, little fear. But systems like the ones in this video, in which the passages are really tight, yeah I 100% agree.

I've been caving here in Jamaica for about 30 years, never subaqua - that's the best way to get yourself killed. Only had one "gone wrong" event, when a local young thug decided to light fires between us, near the top of a very deep shaft, and the entrance. The cave suddenly started filling with smoke, and we couldn't see more than 30cm, and couldn't breathe worth a damn. We didn't know what the hell was happening. Crawled slowly toward the entrance, still had my orientation straight, found one fire, used my drinking water to put it out, crawled further, found another - dumped wet mud on it, crawled further and found another one. There were two others with me, both behind me. The closest one was panicking, saying "Don't leave me, man!". I kept him close. The other was further back and I kept yelling back at him to come toward my voice. Finally made it out with smoke billowing from the entrance. Closest I've been to death so far. Was bloody insane. One year ago the lab I work at got contacted by some biologist that are scouring that same cave system in order to study new animal species found inside. I designed and manufactured the containers that the divers carried inside that system in order for them to study said species. At the time I was a bit mad I wasn't invited to test these devices in the field, but after watching this video... I'm kinda reliefed I wasn't invited. Just a couple hours ago I spoke with the biologist that worked on said expedition as i'm witing a paper on the containers I made, and they told me that the divers went an hour and a half under water to reach said species and come back, as the tunnel system has been furthered explored and consist of 18km (11.2mi) of total darkness and no air pockets... Great video, series and narrative btw!

There are some experienced cave divers "DIVE TALK" that do a breakdown of this case/story and how absurd it is. For example: your friend is tangled in the line, silt makes it impossible to see, your mentor is panicking near the exit so you can still get away......he is ATTACHED TO THE LINE, you are only stupid if you get lost by LETTING GO OF THE LINE. The silt literally doesn't matter if you don't let go. Cave diving 101: DO NOT LET GO OF THE LINE. Unless this is maybe just a tall-tale spun around a "friend's" death. Just saying. A "wonderful and terrible" story.
