I know what you mean. I drove to Marquette MI a while back from Duluth and spent many many hours behind the wheel. When I got to Marquette I was awestruck that this was the same lake they have in Duluth, and even more so by the fact I was only about half way to the end!

I live in Minneapolis and have a cabin in Cornucopia - small world. You might've kayaked right by it along the sandstone! In the winter when the lake freezes over near the shore they offer a similar guided tour through the caves, but instead of in a kayak you're walking on the ice. A great experience in both seasons.

Hey Marie 😀 🛶 🌅 All geared up looking the pro , Let's go!!! " Good things come to those who Paddle" It was a beautiful day for it , your guide was real knowledgeable , billions of years of history is hard to fathom. Going through the caves touching the rocks was so cool , the blue on the sandstone was a pleasant surprise. It was fascinating that the ripple formations were once a seabed. The crevasses were tight & a bit challenging but looked interesting. With all the Islands to explore , it's a fantastic world to immersive yourself in. You mentioned bears , there mostly found on Stockton Island ( it might be the largest concentration in America) & just about any of the other islands to. The Lakeshore also important for nesting 🐦 habitat for Herring , Gulls & double crested Cormorants , Eagle island has the only great blue Heron rookery. If you return in the winter , go to swallow point on Sand island or the north shore of devil Island for the frozen waterfall & chamber filled with icicles ❄️. Well done 👏 🎇 for a first timer you were marvelous , really in your element . there wasn't everything to worry about , like the motto goes ' if in doubt paddle out '. I hope you keep on homing your skills & when you go down to New Orleans your be ready to paddle the bayou St John if you want to get a rare perspective on the city. Whiskey chitto Creek ideal for discovering the wildlife. I'm Glad you & your buddy had a Great day on Lake Superior with it's crystal clear 🌊 is a wonderful place to uncover hidden beauty & curiosity's. Pattison park was a Blast , there's always a wild river wherever you turn. Many of the Stones were used to make Arrowhead 🏹 , if your lucky you could find more Artifacts. They did find copper but mining efforts were unsuccessful. Maybe you know about Martin Pattison who saved the falls from the power dam that was planned (1917) by secretly buying the land. After he became wealthy he built the 42 room Victorian House now known as the Fair lawn Mansion & museum. The park was originally just a small picnic area until the civilian construction corps began working hard to renew it. You can kayak on the black river but there ain't any fish , the 40 mile drive to Brulé river is a better option. There's large lake in the middle of the park with a 399 ft long beach ⛱️ that's popular for swimming but you have to be careful. The Waterfall was Amazing , definitely added to my wallpapers. The Reuben 🥙 you were hankering after looked tasty 😋 I want one now just need the recipe dressing with some Worcestershire sauce. Gooseberry falls was Breathtaking , you can hear the roaring downpour from far away. The great views differ as the seasons change. I liked the close up shots & the small pools for kiddies to play in. Making a FTE mark wherever you go is heartwarming. It was discovered by French explorer Menard Groseillier , whose name means Gooseberry in French. It looks like a beautiful evergreen park to stay in , your find some cozy cabins along highway 61. Next time someone asks about some French phrases you could just teach them something simple like 'Delighted to meet you': Ravi de Vous Rencontrer or Enchante. Glad you got to see and enjoy that. I went to Michigan Tech. University, so I am quite familiar with Lake Superior. We use to vacation up there in the farthest northernmost Upper Peninsula every year on vacation. The brown in the water is just Tannin, from the trees. They have the coolest falls. The thing we liked about it was it was so open, unpopulated, unregulated, air was fresh, water was good, and just nice to get away from the big cities, and the over complications of life, which really we don’t need. I’m happy you got exposure and indulged in that. Come up again to Michigan for some winter fun on snow mobiles, dog sleds, and cross country skiing - plus food and DRINK! Thank you for bothering with little 'ol us/heaven!

As I have previously told you the French were the first Europeans in Minnesota & in Wisconsin. As late as the 1830’s I have seen Wisconsin written as “Ouiscansan”. When les voyageurs ask the First Nation people what they called the lands they wrote it down what they heard in French ears. The Native people had more vowel & consonant sounds than French. When English took over New France in 1763 the changed the French sounding words to English sounding words. Still many locations & town retain French names~city of Fond du Lac.

It's such a quaint town. Very arty. They have street art booths in the summer. It's in the middle of nowhere so if you like remote living you'd love it. Beware, spring comes late and it's much cooler in the summer than the cities. The lake modulates the temp in the winter so it's not too bad

Ah, Wisconsin….my home State. You are in the Northwest part of the State where as I live in the Southeast part of the State. I have been in that area a few times. Not very far from where you kayaked there is the Apostle Islands…very beautiful. Very similar lake geography. You had such a lovely time. I am glad you had such an adventure!

I have such good memories of kayaking that place with perfectly calm waters as a kid. You could see deep down into the water near the first set of cliffs and see giant boulders below your boat. A very eerie feeling, but still fascinating to see.

"Superior never gives up her dead" means the water never gets warm enough for bodies to decay. A couple of feet down water temp is 34°F/2°C even in summer.

I like watching your exploring videos. Very familiar with the areas you are visiting. Loved seeing the sea caves again. Some winters the ice is thick enough for people to walk out to those caves and all through them. Very cool to see the ice formations and crawl and slide through the openings. Your videos of your explorations are greatly appreciated and extremely entertaining. Your journey to Big Manitou Falls in Wisconsin's Pattison State Park was beautifully filmed and showed the beauty of this majestic waterfall whose thundering roar was thought to be the mighty voice of the great Manitou Spirit according to the local Native American tribes. I live less than two miles from Pattison Park and a very, very long time ago (I'm 75) as a young teenager, before climbing there was prohibited, I used to climb down the black basalt walls of the steep gorge to the very base of the mighty falls. Feeling its swirling cool mists blowing on my skin and feeling the deep powerful vibrations of the tons of falling water right before me were unforgettable experiences. Unfortunately, today such an off-limits view from the bottom of the falls is all but impossible. However, there are excellent overhanging observation platforms on the North and South sides of the waterfall's deep gorge that give great views of Manitou Falls, the fourth highest waterfall east of the Mississippi. Love your videos! I'm in Wisconsin and we have a lot to offer here in our beautiful state! In case you are wondering about the brown water, it was easiest to get info from google: the amber-brown color of the water comes from tannins. Tannins are the bitter and astringent compounds that come from the wood, bark, and leaves of oak and fruit trees in the area. Just an fyi!

The Apostle Island kayak our is really nice. Great hikes in State Parks. I noticed a CCC sign (Civilian Conservation Corps) which was a program during the Great Depression (1930s) that employed young men to remodel and build trails, bridges and structures in State and National Parks. They also planted millions of trees. Most of the improvements and roads were widened and paved by the CCC. Wonderful video Marie. Most visitors do not see what you have seen. They bypass 'the Flyover' which is a shame. 🙂🙃😄❣

If you make it to The Apostle Islands the ferry will take you to the town of LaPointe (my wife's maiden name). She's the (I don't know how many times great) grand daughter of Joseph LaPointe, one of the original fur traders of the area, early 1800's. Also if you continue along the shore of Lake Superior into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan check out Fort Wilkins or the coast guard station at Whitefish Point. Hope you plan to make your way through Wisconsin headed south. Either along Lake Michigan or The Mississippi River.

So you CAN Explore it from a kayak afterall…if you’re lucky it might rain and you skid your kayak back to the car. It’s a nice seat in the desert

According to several sources, some of it is from dissolved minerals. The dark brown color is from decaying leaves and roots.

You're a brave girl, Mustang Sally. When we lived in the Florida panhandle, we were amazed that those crazy Europeans went swimming in the Gulf in winter. I cyphered that the water temperature was about the same as the Baltic and North Sea in summer and was okay. But I wasn't about to indulge. Still, that's 10° warmer than Lake Superior. I know there are Polar Bear Clubs that take winter plunges, bless their hearts. Keep adventuring while you can, Marie. Luv ya

Glad you had a fun early summer on the shores of Lake Superior. That lake makes the weather different daily and hourly. You definitely had gorgeous weather on your days. For those thinking of visiting - it’s also quite beautiful with fall colors and (if you are brave) the winter - with Ice piling up on the shore.

IKR!?! Right now there is a 35 knot gale warning in effect until later tonight. I wouldn't want her near the cliffs in this. 🫣 Definitely on my top five favorite places I've been or ever wanted to go. Any time of the year. 🥰

Sometimes during winter, the entire lake freezes over, and people walk out to the sea caves of the Apostle Islands. Come back in winter sometime when you feel up to a different adventure!

Lake Superior is the largest Lake for surface area, while Lake Baikal (far-east Russia) is the largest Lake for volume of water. :) I love Lake Superior.

Yup, baikal is deeper but not as wide.
