Granddad was in the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, in ought six. Out way of Fort Whoop-up. He wrote articles about his experiences, in the Mountie Chronicles. One tale involved him being lost in a blizzard, but he let go of the reins on his horse, Harry, and the horse brought him directly back to the post. Thank you for these wonderful stories!

Horse sense for Christmas! I remember my grandfather telling me about being out in the Maine woods logging alone in his youth, he had an accident, the tang bounced off the log he intended to spike it into and pull, and instead he took it into the back of his leg behind his knee. He knew he was in trouble and hobbled over to the team of horses he had with him, tied the reigns around one wrist and smacked one of the horses on it's arse to go and let them drag him home before he bled to death... it's true, they do know their way home. And it was also a lucky situation, because my grandfather was known to faint at the site of blood, so to have the mind to do what he did in that situation is remarkable to me. But, I guess when that survival instinct kicks in, everything becomes crystal clear as to what you need to do in the moment... thanks AvE, Happy happy, merry merry to you yours!

In 1934, my Dad and his older brother George attended a one-room school out on the Eastern Montana prairie, where their parents had a homestead. Dad and George, along with most of the other students, rode their horses to school. Dad and George usually arrived first, and fired up the potbelly stove that was the only source of heat for the school. One snowy day, they arrived as usual, put their horses up in the lean-to shelter, brought in enough firewood to feed the potbelly and fired the stove. The snow got heavier and heavier, but neither the teacher, nor any other students showed up for school. They hung around for a couple hours, entertaining themselves by writing swear words on the blackboard. They finally decided that no one was coming, so they saddled up their horses and headed home. They got a little scared, because it was whiteout conditions as the storm raged on. Dad asked George if they were going to die. George assured him that the horses would know the way home, and sure enough, the horses got them home.

I was driving down a winding gravel road one day a few years back when I came upon a younger gal and her horse, and that horse seemed determined to get her off its back. I stopped and watched as the horse bucked and reared up and eventually knocked her off into the ditch and took off running down the road. I pulled up to her and asked if she needed help, she said she was fine and yelled to please try to catch her horse. So I took off after this horse, it was trotting down the road but if I accelerated to try to get in front of it the dang thing would get nervous and speed up, so I just hung back and followed as it trotted down the road. We went a couple miles then all of a sudden it turned into a driveway and ran all the way up into the yard and into the corral where it called home. That horse absolutely knew where home was!

I was walking home from first grade on a dirt road in rural New England. A team of Belgian horses come trudging the other way at the end of their day to their owner’s barn. I didn’t know they would stop, so I grabbed the long reins and walked with them the 1/2 mile back, thinking they must have busted loose of some restraint or fence. The farmer’s family managed to keep a straight face and thanked this 60lb kid for “leading” the 2 tons of muscled draughts livestock back home.

Happy Boxing Day from the socked in south Okanagan, thanks again for the stories of the flatlands. When we'd go anywhere on the prairies as a kid, we'd carry a bag of survival gear with us in winter just because of situations like that. We'd also sometimes carry a snow machine on the back of the 2 wheel drive pickups as emergency "get home" rigs. My wife's great grandfather spent a night in the barn in a Minnesota blizzard once because of a blizzard. Happy New Year all.

Imagine most of us wrote up our journals of our experiences in the city, "It was raining hard and the line of traffic stretched the whole length of the street, as far as the eye could see. The fuel gauge was hovering just above the first quarter mark and I figured I should pull off and fill up, but I didn't want to get out of the line of traffic so stuck with it. As a small concession I turned off the air conditioning as I knew that would increase my fuel consumption while crawling along, the air in the cabin became cool and clammy. Anyway, I made it home with barely a whiff of fuel remaining and while eating the meal I just heated in the microwave I reflected on how close I came to disaster, and whether I should have just stopped for fuel when I could." Not Quite The Same. 😆

It always makes me feel very small to hear stories where blind luck has pushed someone to safety. Maybe because I recognise that I've benefitted from ol' Lady Luck too often. Sometimes the brain just isn't enough for those wanting. Either way, thinking can sometimes be overrated and stupidity undervalued. Both heart warming and scary. ty
