It's simple really. To be able to truly explore most caves you need to be relatively small. Don't be afraid of the dark or claustrophobia. But mainly, not everyone can make the trip to many of these places, so they enjoy seeing other people make the trips. Elevators are also a bit different, since you are so far underground. Because of this some people are more scared of caves than elevators.

I went on a trip about 6 years ago to a indoor climbing and caving centre (cant remember where it was) and it was a crazy experience we did a few of the harder trails and it was brilliant but scary. As scary as it was, it felt safe as it was man made. I couldnt imagine doing it in a real cave must be an amazing experience though and you must get such a great sense of accomplishment and a huge buzz. Do these caves lead to an exit or do you have to work your way back the way you came?
@CaverKeith7 жыл бұрын
It is an amazing experience and yes, we do get a great feeling of accomplishment. Most caves have a single entrance so we have to go back out the same way that we went in. A few caves have multiple entrances and incredible through trips can be done. This cave has three entrances and the through trips take around 5-6 hours of very varied caving, including following an underground stream. In some single entrance caves it is possible to do round trips.

@dcrtuk OHA (Ogof Hesp Alyn) but it is off the main route - you need to turn left instead of right after the first main crawl and then, when you hit the boulder chamber, you have to fnd a route down (you need an electron) and locate another (hard to find) passage that takes you further north (the main cave heads south). Unless you are familiar with the system you would never find it (I guess it is the same with so many caves) :)

Hi Curtis. Mark is a glutton for punishment. He's been through tighter things than this since - including some very tight squeezes today!

It’s a cracking trip; I’ve done this twice. The only bit I don’t much enjoy is the boulder choke. Very much looking forward to getting back to OFD at some point.

Hi Duncan. I agree and I'm looking forward to getting back into OFD. Have you done the through trip from OFD 1 to Cwm Dwr? That's am amazing trip.
@DuncanFoster3 жыл бұрын
@@CaverKeith just the once. My first trip was 1->Cwm Dwr, second was Cwm Dwr to Top, and third was Top and up towards the upper reaches (Was it called Smithy’s?) and back the same way.

Did this several times 50 odd years ago. Home made wetsuits and lead acid batteries.

When I first did Cwm Dwr I was similarly kitted out. Believe me it's much more comfortable wearing a fleece undersuit, and with modern LED lighting you can actually see where you are going.

OMG! just watching I feel like I cannot breathe? have you ever been terrified whilst being stuck and, how did you overcome it?
@CaverKeith8 жыл бұрын
Hi Molly. I can honestly say that I've never been worried about getting stuck. A couple of years ago I was caving with a young lady who got really badly wedged. Fortunately she remained calm and we were able to free her. She said that she was calm because she had faith in us and our ability to get her out.

Incredible how someone is able to build and worries about building in such a tight space

Reminds me of the time the tour guide at the Jenolan caves told the story about 2 Swedish girls stuck very deep (steady now) inside the caves, no English, panicking, no way back ONLY forward. Screaming, crying, down there for a long time with limited battery life left and Nobody wanted to do that in the pitch dark. incidentally he turned off the lights for 10 minutes on our tour and said after a few hours you start hallucinating thinking up is down etc. FUCK that! Respect for cavers pushing it to the limits. felt my heart beating faster watching this video. I've started watching more videos like this while trying to calm myself.

I have the same question when I watch all these videos on caving. Who was the first person to explore these caves and how the hell do they walk around with their gigantic balls? Imagine being the first person to go through, no idea where you are going and possible dead ends and pitfalls.
