Do you believe they were indigenous to those lands? My 8th great grandparents were born in Zacatecas in 1730, they had Spanish names, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t native to the lands right?? The Spanish did force their names and religions onto them.

Many didn't have last name. My family is from Los Altos de Jalisco. During the conquest and in the 17 and 18 century the slaves and the natives were only counted as Juan Esclavo or Maria India. It was only after the 18 century they started getting last name. I know I wasn't going to get any native from my mom as she is 100% European. Some families in some areas did not mix. It a lie that the Spaniards came and started mixing. They didn't mix until way after the late 1700s and even than it was taboo. Zacatecas especially where the Caxanes lived there were very few Spaniards, only 12 to be exact. This is where I found out were my 2nd great grandfather got his native. His mother was of Caxan decent. They were simple called Maria Alexandra and Maria Gloria. Those were his parternal grandmothers. Most Mexicans still spoke a Native language in the 1800s. That is how you can debunk that there was a huge metizaje. The rest of my ancestors married within each other in Jalisco and all of them had slaves and natives working in their Haciendas. I took me 8 years to finish my family tree and thank God most of it was already done. I can be certain that my Native side is Caxan. Since my Native Grandmother were from Momax Zacatecas. It would make sense most of the population was native since there were only 12 Spanirds back than. You just going to have to to the research and most of the paper work will tell you if they were Indio or Spaniard. If you family is from Zacatecas you are mostly indigenous. @@Coconut____________214

@@3x157 nah im from nochistlan and im 60% euro its actually the second least populated indigenous state in the country believe it or not. States that have mainly indigenous heritage are more Oaxaca or Guerrero. Places in the south.

@@isaac7116 We live in Mexico there is indigenous people everywhere. I'm from Los Altos and there a a lot of ingenuous people but the whites are 90%-100% European. While the indigenous people intermarried with the slave population of blacks and mulatos.

Natives could not be enslaved by royal decree. The only exception was warriors captured in battle. I would double check the source of your figures and the span over which this took place. Be well.

Joe, my family is also from Zacatecas on my father's side (he was born and raised there). You can do a DNA test and it is helpful but unfortunately it is very difficult to go very far especially if your family was poor and from the countryside like mine. I was told the best thing is to travel to the state and look in the records for clues. Either way, it's a difficult process. I'm still trying to find info for my family so hopefully you find something or have found some luck. 🙂
