Some people have financial worries though. Yes, cars are generally bad "investments" anyway, but a lot of people do keep one eye on the odometer. Not trying to keep a car to a collectors item status, but rather trying not to go over the typical market average, so that they do not get raped when it's eventually time to resale. Love having that junker in the garage fleet, so just going to the grocery story or for sitting in traffic...

Agreed, that really hit home for me. I have a 987 Cayman S and just broke 50k miles. I started to think that maybe I shouldn't drive it as much despite it being my daily. But then I realised that I bought this to drive and have fun in so I shouldn't be worried about the mileage. Whatever price it eventually sells us at shouldn't be a worry for all the fun that it provides. On the plus side, its value seems to be holding up here.

I just got a 2016 GTS, and I absolutely relate to your experience. I LOVE this car. Mine is an intense PTS violet/fuchsia color (Rubystar), so I know just what you mean about not being able to get away with anything because the car is so very memorable. This is the first car I have ever owned that is not a manual transmission, and occasionally, I too wonder if I made the right choice, but I am constantly impressed with how well the PDK responds/anticipates what the right move is, and I intend to take the car to the track with a PDK expert to really get to know it. I look forward to every drive in this car, and smile very time I see her. I was on the fence for so long about 981 GTS vs 718 S, and I am very happy with my choice. The sound of it makes me giddy…

That's what makes him and this channel great. Anyone can go rent a bunch of cameras, then over edit, throw on some annoying high beats per minute intro music, make a logo, throw on a bro hat with the "me too" flavor of the week whatever is "in" styling. It's really the fundamental problem on youtube. Do we really need 19 "5 things I hate about my ____ vehicle?" they all look/sound the same. Then the actual in car driving videos are just stat regurgitation exercises. Throw in the same rolling pan shots and call it a day? This is why I love this channel because like you said, it does a much better job of describing what it's like to actually DRIVE the vehicles in a down to earth way. Fast lane car/smoking tire are also pretty down to earth and useful. Paul and his ways he can describe are def at artistic highs, he could prob be one of those snoody wine snob people and pull off a convincing act, thank god he's doing car stuff instead!

With the pdk, it seems like you get more performance out of the car, you drive it faster, you can focus more on the road. In that sense, it seems great. But.... I think it's a stretch to say you're not losing anything from an engagement perspective. It is such a different experience to drive a manual. Not a good or bad thing like most idiots on the internet say.... but a stretch to say the engagement is the same in my opinion - different.

The gears are shorter than the manual that's why it feels faster (There are more of them).. Also the gears change quicker.. But for me it's as boring as hell.. Manual all the way.. Cars are like fine wine. The older they are, the better the experience. A manual is a major contributor to that and will never be outdated. The simplicity and fun factor of a manual can never be replaced, unless you can't be bothered to hone the skill. Traffic arguments are tiring. I drive my stick shift E39 M5 in the 401 (Toronto) traffic, and while any car in any traffic is annoying, the trade-off is worth the involvement and joy of a perfect rev match. The cayman is a car that will always be good to drive with a stick. The PDK has already gone through many revisions and software changes. Dual clutches are like Windows software. You just can't go back to using Windows '95 software when the newer revisions are better. Take the software aspect out of anything, and suddenly you gotta work hard and the fun is endless.

PDK vs Manual. The ultimate debate. "better car" comment makes me chuckle. I'm happy someone out there was able to give this guy validation that he was desperate for. PDK is less involvement. "am i disengaged" comment is an interesting choice of words. Nobody could successfully argue that pdk=disengaged because that's false, but it's true to say less engaged. Rowing gears is a personal thing, to each their own. For me, manual is more car, more joyful driving experience.

When you have a PDK, however good it is, you’re often wondering “am I missing out”. Since switching back to manual with my 6-speed Boxster GTS, I’ve never once thought “should I have got a PDK”. Even when you’re spending the day in city traffic, the manual is just an absolute delight.

His mounting location is FOOLISH. And, it's illegal in 28 states including Utah. it screams, "Pull me over!" It should be as low as possible for Lidar - cops shoot at the front plate or headlights. The theory that you'll get better radar detection up high is BS. How do I know? I was a police volunteer for seven years and played with hand held and car mounted radar and laser guns for hundreds of hours including running my own car with an Escort Redline against both. The chances of a lidar detector going off soon enough to save you butt is very, very, very, low.

I'm really not a fan of PDK. I've driven one of the first gen PDKs on the second generation Cayman and the newer one on the 991.1 GT3. They both feel like they unsettle the car a little bit on downshifts and there doesn't seem to be a "mode" that makes the gearbox do what you want it to do. If you put it in D, the thing just upshifts mercilessly on you (like the engine never wants to exceed 2500 rpm), but if you put it in sport mode, it holds onto gears for too long. Admittedly, being able to leave it in drive with the exhaust valves closed is nice for sitting in commuter hell. Even then, though, I kept finding weird situations where I'd want a little more power, I'd add throttle, the gearbox wouldn't react, so I'd add more throttle, and suddenly the PDK would decide to shift from seventh to third. Suddenly I'd gone from merely wanting another 15mph to screaming down the road at 8,000 RPM with the car howling like a banshee. A little middle-ground wouldn't have gone amiss. Obviously the PDK is a faster gearbox, but I feel like my manual shifts are about as smooth as PDK on average (sometimes smoother), and I just prefer the additional workload of managing the gearbox during any kind of fun driving. It's nice being able to put the PDK cars in D and let them creep their way through commuter traffic un-assisted, but I still think I'd only opt for the double clutch box if I lived somewhere with genuinely awful traffic or ~*really*~ cared about my track times. I'm just not wild about the thing.

I purchased a base 981 Cayman PDK and love it. I've already received a ticket driving it so the last thing I want is more power. My car feels plenty fast especially with the addition of a Sprint Booster that greatly decreases throttle and shift lag. I also think that the front of the Base and S are by far the best looking. Personally I think the front of the GTS, Spyder and GT4 look stupid. The thing I don't like is that the sun visors don't slide like they do in an Audi. When the sun is shining through the rear half of the drivers door window you cant slide the visor to block it which is just plain stupid! Argh! There are a few other stupid things but every car has them. The new Audi TT has useless cup holders. The 718 looks and sounds stupid and I'll happily be enjoying the beautiful sound of my flat six each time a dull sounding 718 flies by me. When I think of all the money I saved not buying an S, GTS, Spyder or GT4 it makes me very happy. Since I don't track my car I don't need more power plus I like keeping my license.

I picked up a 2014 Boxster S with PDK this spring (previous car was a 2011 Corvette GS convertible 6-speed manual). My first test drive session included trying a 718 Cayman, 718 Boxster S, then the 981 Boxster S CPO last. I enjoyed all three cars but I knew I wanted to go for the CPO with its flat-6 while I still had the chance. The sound was just completely different on the new turbo cars (in a bad way) and while they had more mid-range punch they just didn't really "do it" for me. Coming from an LS3 car all three of them were slower anyways. I waited 5 days before deciding to buy the 981--most of that time spent debating whether I could really live with paddle shifters. Ultimately I'm glad I caved--this car is still a blast to drive. It gets put into manual mode with Sport+ enabled as soon as I get in. The only true downside is that sometimes when slowing down the car will hit a low speed threshold and downshift on its own at the same time that I'm manually downshifting it, so once in a while I end up going from 3rd to 1st unexpectedly. It's pretty rare, and something I've gotten more used to over time, so not a big deal really. I'm not sure about the GTS cars but the 981 S cars leave a lot of power on the table due to Porsche's artifical power classing (entirely ECU tune-dependent; they rated the Boxster at 315, Cayman at 325, and 911 at 350 yet they all have identical engine configurations as far as my research has shown). For this reason I got an AccessPort & FabSpeed custom tune which was good for about 25-30whp/tq, returning the falsely-lost power vs. the 911. It was a noticeable bump in power and mid-range torque especially. I highly recommend it. Keep on making these videos--the content is great as always!

Manual engagement cannot be compared to anything, even PDK or whatever Semi Auto transmission out there. Maybe for the lap times, but for sheer enjoyment banging gears and rev matching yourself can't be matched.

Great review. I know how hard it is to criticize a car you *own*, especially one you really like, but I think you nailed it. Chris Harris owns a 911 Turbo S, but says the 981 S is all the car any human needs. I agree. I bought a 981 S with every performance option available and I think it's astounding. Mine came with the Goodyear F1 AS2s as well; however, I replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport 4Ss and it's like a new (grippier, quieter) car. Plus, there's a tread-wear warranty! My chief complaint is you can't get anything larger than a toothbrush in the car. It's hard to look cool when your golf clubs are in the passenger seat...

ChuckRonin After test driving the 718 and 911 (both turbocharged), I chose the 981 Cayman S. The mid engined NA 3.4 provides a unique driving experience I found lacking in the turbo Porsches. Had the ecu remapped to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km 3.89sec.... Super twitchy throttle response and with a custom valved exhaust bypass perfectly validates Chris Harris' observation.

In the market for a Cayman S, preferably a 981. I wish you went more in depth as to why the manual GTS owner felt you had the better car.

Thanks for mentioning that the Eagle F1’s throw up road gravel. They come standard on my Focus ST and now I’m hopeful my next set of tires will be nicer to my wheel wells. Thought it was just the car.

But that’s what sticky tires do. Otherwise slap on some wack all season tires and say goodbye to grip

I switched from manual to pdk when I began using it for a daily driver. Manual's get old in rush hour traffic or if you are running around doing chores. I do miss the manual though on road or pleasure trips.

Having a 981 Boxster GTS, I agree with you 100%.

I've got a Boxster S 6 speed and an Audi S3 with the S-tronic DCT. Wildly different vehicles I know, but for the sake of argument i'm going to just focus on the power delivery through the transmissions. Point to point, the DCT is faster and allows you to cover ground with so much confidence you could make a light aircraft jealous. There's just less thinking to do to deliver power correctly, and every shift makes you superhuman. But what you gain in efficiency, you lose in emotion. However, the six speed Getrag gearbox in the boxster should be the benchmark for manufacturers looking to keep 3 pedal cars alive. It delivers a rifle bolt action with every throw, and the slower engagement allows you to savor the change, and the exhaust note. I love both cars and take them both on road trips, but one is a can of spray paint while the other is a paint brush. One is powerful, raw and fast, whilst the other is more careful, and delicate, yet both can ruin your day equally if not respected. There is no right or wrong answer in the stick vs PDK argument, it all comes down to the mere question; do you want to tag the asphalt with the wild glamor of graffiti street art, or do you want smother the asphalt with the emotion of DaVinci's brush strokes. The best answer of course, is to paint with both.

I've ridden shotgun in a 991 GT3 around an F1 circuit driven by a quite good driver, and I've driven a BMW M2 with the DCT. Modern DCTs are impressive, and the PDK is easily the best of the bunch, but I would still choose the manual in either an M2 or a Cayman S.

What a beautiful car! Not to mention the performance, I really like the elegant blue color. By the way, what happened to the Everyday Driver Car Debate Podcast? I have long been waiting for the update! I am looking forward to new podcast materials as well.

I've always following your video and I love all of it. May I ask you a question, comparing both Cayenne 3.6 and Cayman 3.6, which one is better ? And which one do you like most ? thanks. :)
@leokal4575 жыл бұрын
they have absolutely nothing in common. Ive driven a cayman by myself and did passenger rides in a cayenne. There is no way you can compare these too. Everything in the cayenne feels slow and heavy and more rubberized. The cayenne is more a bus for your ego than it is a sportscar

I can appreciate the "it wants to go fast" comments he makes. When I had my 1985.5 944, no ones idea of a fast car, I had to actively work to keep it under 85 mph. It was such an odd feeling, it rode and felt better at 100 than at 60.

As soon as the new Corvette comes out these will drop in price substantially. Can't wait! I want one in the $30-40k range

i hope so. The new vette is realistically out of my range and ill have to wait 5 years for a used one, but a 30k car would be great while waiting!

2:16 . Not missing out… but it would be FUN! :) 6:43 … You wanted to shift… :) I have a GTS 2015 manual, best car ever. I look at how you drive this automatic version and you look disengaged from the experience. I do believe you like it, but I’m sure the manual is the best experience.

Agreed - probably more satisfying than GT4 because you can exploit the potential of the car more fully on the road, and it's more discreet.

Yep, should have gotten the 6-speed. I had a '14 Cayman S with PDK & missed the engagement big time. You can't even rev it unless you pull both paddles in at the same time & that only works at snail speeds. As advanced as the PDK is, it is not engaging without the 3rd pedal. By the way, I've owned (2) Caymans & drove a PDK for 3 years. I have more fun in my 6-speed BRZ now with more features, including a backup camera for a 3rd of the price.

@ggarrison10877 жыл бұрын
Guys the PDK is so good. Soooo Good. It really does close the gap to the manual substantially. Whether using the paddles or the stick you honestly get a TON of engagement. Fairly unique to porsche but others are coming up as well. PDK is a work of art.

Drive the shit of out it Paul. I have owned a 14 cayman s for 24 months and have put 65000km on it. I recommend a Cobb tune. And I recommend doing the single greatest upgrade I've done so far: Removing the smaller secondary spring from the gas pedal. Stock feel is way too stiff. Makes modulating the throttle a dream.
@rossyannis30005 жыл бұрын
Watch Pronometer I've had my 14 Cayman s for 36mths, now have 41000km. Did the COBB ecu Protune and get 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km 3.89sec. Am I happy?? You betcha!!!

Torn between getting a M3 E92 or a Cayman 987 or 981 S. Car will be daily driven. Which one would you go for? I've driven both (on road) and the M3 felt much faster yet more comfortable.
@LegendInThaMakin7 жыл бұрын
9000Redline easily the m3. I'd much rather own an m car than a low end Porsche. Plus the m3 sounds better & has back seats & revs to 8200.
