Our opinions of this bike couldn't be more different. To me, the firm seat gets more comfortable over increasing distances, the riding position is one that i never think about, never get achey lower back, sore wrists or pins&needles (supersports do all of that within minutes), and everything's exactly where i want it. The engine is docile and easy around town, with the brakes kept covered there's always plenty of poke for all eventualities from just the small throttle movement that that allows you. Handling always feels easy and lightweight, like a bmx, throwable to the point of feeling like you're taking liberties with it, no matter what speed. Suspension is firm but well damped and compliant, i stiffened the rear to about the middle setting to remove some high speed undulation bounce. With a nice amount of throttle (up to perhaps 50% opening) and a nice amount of revs (up to 4500rpm or so) it'll cruise along all day, happily looking at the scenery, nothing's a bother. Then, you wind it on, let the motor spin, and boy doesn't it just wake right up. Tippy telepathy. I've always found myself thinking "Japanese Buell". I do understand what you mean about not being able to ride it slowly, there is a point with things where it goes from docile and easy going to absolute "come on then, let's have ya!", it doesn't want to jog, either walk or sprint, if the revs are over 5000, walking isn't happening. It's never felt nervous, skittish, poorly set up, any of that sort of thing. I'd expect a bike to take umbrage at things like gravel and leaves, as far as grip is concerned i describe them as being unfair, but nothing else seems to bother it. At no point should any of that be taken as me saying you're wrong about anything, obviously that isn't the case, it just feels remarkable that we're talking about the same bike

I really think this is a great video for people to watch before purchasing a bike. It was a good reminder to me that there are a lot of bikes I really like, but to take into consideration my body when making a decision. People always talk about your riding style, but rarely do they talk about how old injuries, medical conditions or aging should also be an important factor in the decision. Thank you for explaining why it was that this bike wasn't a good bike for you as an individual.

So glad you posted this. I've just done 13k on my CB1000R and have no choice but to retire it to the garage and bought another bike because of the exact reasons you explained. I've earned 6 points on it within the 16 months of owning this bike as riding slow is bitey and jerky as hell, I also could NEVER get comfortable on it. I even got bar raisers which only made a slight bit of difference mixed with spending hours adjusting the suspension hoping to find a sweeter ride on B roads of commuting. What eased up the jerky bitey feeling was to turn off engine braking. I had permanent pins and needles in my legs and the bike always felt like it wanted to fall over on low speed cornering. My arse also started hurting within minutes on being on it. Just could never get to trust it. Another thing, seriously watch for rust on the front petrol tank mounting brackets, in fact watch for rust all over that tank. Paint job is rubbish. These front brackets are hidden so you won't see the rust until you remove the front plastics. Watch for water getting into the clocks too. I don't want to go on too long about the negatives, which there are many, but on the positives that engine is a beauty and sounds absolutely amazing. The quick shifter is smooth as a kitten. That bike has an incredible sound when quickly accelerating between 4th and 6th and always turns heads. The attention I get on it is like no other. Sadly, the positives are too few for me mixed with the endless problems which Honda won't warranty. So it must go. Now got the new BMW F900XR. What a difference and pleasure to ride. Good luck and hope you can find some sort of comfort on it.

Thank you very much for your honesty. I am a veteran motorcyclist with some other injury, the worst in the shoulder, and I am hesitating between the CB 1000 R and the X ADV (among others I have also seen your test). I agree with you on the psychological aspect (I owned a CB 900 F back in the day) and they are motorcycles that like to ride fast on twisty roads, and now, at least in Spain, things about speed have really gotten serious. Perhaps the X ADV, although I think my riding level is very high, will allow me to enjoy the road in a more rational way. Although the truth is that the CB 1000 R exerts a great fascination on me.

Such a good point about the mental relationship with a bike. I had a cute little vespa, slightly modded with some performance rollers and I could beat almost any sports bike off at the lights. The scooter begged to be dragged at each light. They seem to have their own personalities.

I returned from AT to a Duke. I tried to get on with it, but my back, wrists and that speed thing (exactly as you describe, you nailed the psychological aspect) was too much. After you’ve has an Adv, or reached a certain age maybe, it’s hard to change to an all out road bike. In the end I caved in... I hope it works out 👍

I was surprised when you let your AT go for the CB. I’ve had my VStrom 1000 for over 4 years and have considered trading it several times. I’ve owned over 60 bikes in my 30 plus years of riding. I’ve had sport bikes, cruisers, dual sports and sport tourers. I recently sold an RC51 for many of the reasons you mentioned. I tended to ride too fast, was worn out after a day’s ride, and figured I’d hurt myself eventually. I have neck issues and staring at the ground in front of the bike wasn’t a healthy way to get around. I kept my VStrom and Harley Sportster. I really missed the comfort and visability the adventure bike riding position offers. I also appreciate the versatility the adventure bikes provide. You can ride them fast, you can just putt around, or you can ride on roads most sporty bikes should avoid. Once you get that in your blood, you just can’t get it out. I realize trading this soon isn’t a wise move financially, but sometimes you just have to cut your losses and do what you know you need to do.

Glad you are thinking it out, get the DCT (you can use paddles in town) to save ya wrist and mellow it off. You recognise your triggers, work on them. We are a very similar vintage Fish and I hear where you are coming from. You (we) don't bounce that well and you need to acknowledge that. Resist the transforming into random genitals and get back in ya groove... I do hope you are gonna trade it on an AT, not chuck ohlins, knobblies and luggage at the CB.

I bought my first ever road bike 2 years ago,, had and rode dirt bikes and four wheelers all my life!! The bike I bought is a 41 yrold. Honda that only cost me 760$ delivery to my door !! The bike was in running and riding conditions when I got it and all original bike,,, but ,, bc of my riding style injuries etc I also had to change a bunch of things on it to suit me and spent at least double what I paid for the bike!! But it’s my bike bought and paid for and now it’s set up so I can ride it with a smile on my face every time

Oh Mr. Fish... you nailed it! I am 60 but in almost new condition LOL! I fit nicely on her at 5’11 and a Svelt 180 lbs. I find it is FAST and I do the same thing when I ride the 2019 CB1000R. She is a Naughty Little Girl! Eh? In Standard mode she rides well mannered enough around town, but out in the country and the Cascade foothills it wants to go go! I am too old for this bike but I freaking love her!!! I have a Yoshimura Alpha Slip on.... sounds nice.... I as well have a 2015 Honda VFR800DLX and I love the hell out of this Sport Tour bike. Big Red is the bike I ride the furthest, 5.8 US Gallon tank, 5 stage heated grips, wind protection......and that beautiful V4 burble on the engine breaking makes me tingle :). This bike and I have the most saddle time and we have become one, the CB1000R makes me do naughty things she Is a seducer for sure!!! I love both my Honda’s... I purchased the VFR in 2018 brand new out of a crate on sale for $7000 (MSRP was $13000 USD) and I got the CB this year for $2000 under MSRP of around $13000 USD. I am keeping them as long as I can, I a young and fit 60 year old with 44 years of riding. I hope I can get another decade or two of riding lol! Cheers from Lynden, Washington, USA the Country apparently with two Presidents ha ha If I misspelled forgive, you know how it is typing on a phone, old eyes, touch screens, and small type!!

This really speaks to me, I have a street triple, and I have the same issues, not physically, but I can't bear to ride it slow (legally), but the roads are so bad, I spend longer on google maps looking for the quality twisty road that's going to make it all worth it that I do actually riding. I end up on bumpy narrow roads with slow traffic, double white lines, constant 30 and 40 speed limits, gravel in the middle of the road, and I'm just getting pummelled by the firm suspension and hard seat the whole time. Why do we even do this hobby in the UK?

Yeah, I miss my 2017 AT DCT. Never loved my NC750X, CRF250L was too slow commuting on dual carriageway, current VFR800 is killing my knees and isn’t fun on local country lanes. Think I can only afford to go to a CRF250 Rally with suspension upgrades, and hoping that will make the local country lanes more fun, now that I don’t need to commute, as working from home.

I’m a bit confused you say you can’t take it on the smaller twisting B roads but I’m sure the bike should be happy at lower speeds as it has plenty of torque to ride slow in 4 , 5 or sometimes 6th gear at slower speeds. I think you ride every where fast because your a GP rider at heart lol🏍😊

Hello Mr Fish. I am looking at buying the cb1000r after a lot of thought, but this video makes me second guess my decision. I had an mt125 as my first bike for a couple of years and I always enjoyed riding in the back country roads that are a bit dusty, gravely and with many holes. I had an XSR900 too, which I would never take on such a road because of how much a rebel the XSR was. It was very twitchy on the throttle and it seemed like it wanted to be either full throttle, or completely off. Would you say that my dreams of dusty back country roads on the cb1000r would be a no go, just like the XSR was for me? I understand that mt125 wasn't anywhere near an adventure touring bike either, but I had no issues or worries on it when it came to bad roads. I wouldn't want to spend £10,000 on that beauty just to realize I wouldn't want to ride it where I want :D

Yeah m8, get back on the AT. No compromising ergonomics, much lesser engine braking and a suspension that takes care of the poor road conditions you described. Trips can be planned now. And it'll take care of your mental issues as well having the constant need to go fast on the CB. I know those issues. I bought a MT-09 SP last year. It took less than 3 mounths until I got busted and lost my licence (for a mounth). I live in Hamburg, and the sheer amount of speed traps and cam equipped civil motorcycles and cars - and that combined with an outrageous penalty catalog - appears to be from a dystopia like "1984". After I got busted I really struggled a bit to adjust my attitude, you know, to ride within the speed limits 98% of the time (with very few, very short and carefully timed outbursts of acceleration and decent aggressive cornering) and still be able to get off the bike with a feeling of true satisfaction. Like when I get off my bone stock 2014 Iron 883. You can't blame the MT-09, it does everything. Tons of character, low end grunt, pretty plush ride (I'm a light weight), smooth. I had to accept the fact though that it feels better the harder you ride it. Which is funny because that's the reason why I bought the bike in the first place. I wanted a capable hooligan bike haha. So sometimes I go on the Autobahn. Yeah, no real corners, but at least you can accelerate as hard and as long as you want and go as fast as you want. Maybe you would keep the CB a bit longer if you were healthy, but you can't deny the mighty AT of course :) I'll keep my MT-09 SP, I love it so much haha. But the puzzle finally only can be solved by a 3rd personal dream bike: The mighty CRF 250 L :) I deeply have fallen in love with it! I love the looks and the fact that it is a dual sport. And it's a Honda! I badly want to go greenlaning, exploring, or toy around in hidden spots in the city. I can commute on it, I can care less about the traffic or the weather. It gives me more possibilities to spend time in the saddle with guaranteed fun. What a special machine!! I'll have to get one before they likely run out of production in 2021 (and will return euro5 updated in 2022). Cheers m8 :)

Well I never... all through that, as I listened, I was thinking "sorry Mr Fish but you chose poorly - should've got the AT". ...and there it is - well done mate, based on what you said, a very wise decision.

Get an africa twin and an used MT09. The ergos of the mt09 are better. That could be your second bike. You can find them for cheap used.

Nothing wrong with the bike, then. I'd be interested to know how it pulls low down the rev range in a high gear. Interesting. And I stayed to the end.

Try rain mode around town and on gravel. That is significantly less aggressive..

Having just got an MT09(SP),I reckon this all rounder would suit you better. The modes give you everything for all conditions, it's most comfortable bike I've had and handles great. Commuter when you want, mental when you want. Don't modify, bite the bullet and get rid....

Be honest with yourself for the riding you do this isn't the bike for you. I've been there before, the only big modification I'd do is sell it for something else. An Africa Twin or the new Triumph Tiger 900 are a good option.

I rode the CB1000R and Honda africa twin AS back to back... I bought AT, for exactly the reason you describe... mental vs usable. Africa T can go anywhere... twisties with the Z1000's no you won't keep up, but... who cares really. In town, the Z1000's are complaining. on b roads, Z1000's complain, motorways Z1000's complain. long distance... Z1000's complain. Petrol stations every 90 miles lol. Get yourself a 2020 Africa twin. 😜😁

I really want a Honda CB1000R plus, I've only ever had big fast sport bikes, I've been riding since 16 years old, now 64 and still riding big fast sport bikes like a hooligan, give me your bike as it's no good for you, lol.

I'm in a similar position. The CB1000R is like my KZ650, but better handling and double the horsepower. Really more power than I can use, but when I'm doing a pass of a truck in a restricted distance, I appreciate every pony and lb.ft. The riding position is upright. I kind of prefer the riding position of my old Hayabusa, but the 150 lbs. less weight is great when flicking it around. So sit on the R and the RR before you make a final choice. I hope you cheeks don't ache from smiling too much!

Everything true, perfect bike but lot of people will die on it, cause of the engine, it's prefect, but this bike demands high revs and high speeds, it's like a drug, never high enough :) I'm a new biker, bought new -red and after first season I'm selling it, wanna stay alive. But....it is a perfect machine, bravo Honda.

If you think the roads in the South of England are bad, try living in Glasgow Scotland. You'd think you'd been dropped off on the moon to ride your bike. The craters are the same.
