Further evidence that Mr. Snuffleupagus was once Big Bird's "imaginary friend!" It never ceases to amaze me that so many don't remember it, but for Snuffy's earlier appearances, he would always appear to Big Bird unannounced (and much scarier-looking in his earliest episodes). Big Bird told his friends about Snuffy for so long, but everytime he went to find someone to prove Snuffy was real, the absent-minded beast always wandered away, leaving Big Bird frustrated and the friends he brought back to his nest disbelieving. After long enough, the adult characters started to lose their patience with Big Bird. The show decided to drop the storyline when concerns were raised that children might not share certain things if they worried adults wouldn't believe them (abuse, etc). The show definitely managed to bury the plotline as its largely forgotten today, but it was one instance when the adults behind _Sesame Street_ learned something, too.

Big bird was homeless... he lived on the street.. in the original series he lived behind a wall made of old apartment doors in a nest in an empty lot behind some trash cans......nobody ever had time for him. ...they always said ""what do you want big bird ? we're busy !..... he sings in the park and people give him food... he's a little crazy... he sees big furry mammoths that no one else can see... it was a metaphor

Excellent last question! Why is Oscar so grouchy yet people still like him? My theory.... it's because people sense...esp kids sense that he isn't as mean as he sounds. There's no malevolence. He doesn't beat people up. He's got a gruff way about him but Oscar's still a nice guy. Case in point: when he drove Maria to the hospital when she went into labor, back when. ... And the fact that he does talk to kids nicely. He has his Grouchketeers. And he does LOVE trash. In one memorable Sesame Street, Danny DeVito was going to take Oscar to the Cans Festival (Not to be mistaken for Cannes in France) . And Oscar's like, "The Cans Festival?! Heaven. I'm in Heaven!"
