The reason not to have multiple bids on fighter aircraft is because you won't "be on the inside" of a rigged process to fund an aircraft too expensive to fly or train on,equip or maintain, with too high wing-loading for air combat or ground support, with a single engine that won't get your pilot back, and that is moreover very vulnerable to AAA and small arms fire.

The new Photonic Radars will make all Stealth aircraft obsolete overnight and a lot of military budget money is being poured into developing it worldwide. That being said, the F-35 is way ahead of the pack technologically speaking even though they tried to pack too much capability into one airframe IMO (not just stealth).

It is the most modern fighter with some amazing technology in terms of sensors, datalink, computing power, etc. This provides amazing situational awareness, which is extremely important. Maneuverability-wise it’s very good as well, because it doesn’t need externally carried weapons, sensor pods or fuel tanks, that would induce drag and/or add weight. So in a typical combat load it’s very capable, though maybe not exceptional. And then add the stealth on top of that. As for price, I have a hard time believing it would be cheaper than the Swedish Gripen. But it’s a different class of airplane altogether.

the arguments of why a full-scale traditional competition was not undertaken are somewhat unclear and murky, or poorly explained here. the reason that there were no Dassaults, SAABs, or any BAE incentives that competed among each other, was the initial understanding that instead of looking at different models and different types of airplanes, the F35 would already from the outset comprise a very capable platform that all memberstates could to some extent influence and "adapt" and improve. No competition would ever be possible for all the countries that end up buying F35 simulataneously, this multitude of customers also reducing the cost of the plane.

I agree. Air forces changed their tactics after Operation Desert Storm because the kills were mostly coming from BVR missile engagements and pilots were relying on radar and jamming to gain an upper hand. The F-35 is a single engine plane and dual engine planes are best for Canada's colder climate. The take away is that this plane is not to defend Canada but to invade countries in the middle east. These planes should be for defense not invasion.
@SealFredy58 жыл бұрын
That's 100% BS. The F-16 (and many planes before it) operate(d) in cold climates. Single engines are currently more reliable than twin engines as well. i.imgur.com/ELelAYu.png The F-35 will be operated by Norway, the USAF, the USN, Denmark, and the UK. All of which operate aircraft in cold weather. Also, the F-35 is by far the best fighter for any use currently in production. It's more capable in pretty much any regard, and is only more expensive in up front cost than the Super Hornet. However, the Super Hornet requires a 10 year life extension to reach the 30 that the F-35 is designed for; which actually makes the Super Hornet more expensive than the F-35A.

So tired of Canada getting ripped off by the US industrial military complex. Are we not capable of building our own aircraft ?
@ivanlagrossemoule4 жыл бұрын
Funny because the unit costs should be below 80 million this year. The unit cost only went down, not the other way around. We're in 2020, the 20th century has been over for 20 years now. Multirole aircraft are actually very capable and every relevant airforce in the world thinks so. The F-35 is great at maneuvering because it isn't limited by software anymore. You don't need more gun rounds when you have a massive 1600+ T/R module AESA, full situational awareness due to DAS as well as a really powerful IRST (EOTS), all combined with excellent stealth. Do you think Canada can afford to spend 50+ billion on an aircraft development project? Also Canada was meant to be taking part in the F-35 by for example developing parts or building them.

The F35 was incepted in 1995. In 2020 - that is a quarter century after it was born - it had the following numbers for combat readiness as per the Pentagon: MC, which stand for "Mission Capable" was 50 % for the F35A. The Pentagon defines "Mission Capable" as the airplane being able to take-off. So in 2020 a quarter century after its birth the F35 in its most capable version was able to take-off in one of every two missions. There is another metric called FMC, which stand for "Fully Mission Capable". This is definded as actually completing a mission as ordered. FMC for the F35A in 2020 was 34%. In other words in 2/3 missions the fighter was unable to carry out the mission as ordered. Of course the respective numbers for the other versions of the F35 were much much worse. The F35 is a scrap cheap with a slick exterior which makes it look good for the sales pitch to gullible buyers. The F35 - born a lemon, always a lemon.
