Russian Spies in Canada : A Tale of Two Traitors - The Fifth Estate

Spies, double agents, attempted poisonings. As the diplomatic furor continues to erupt in the UK over the targeting of a Russian double agent and his daughter, it brings back memories of the Cold War.
Canada had its own history of Cold War secrets and betrayal. And in this special KZbin feature, we revisit what happened to a Russian double agent from Canada after our cameras went away.
Few of our updates have been more surprising. It's a story the fifth estate first covered in 1982 in the depths of the Cold War -- a KGB agent, code named Gideon, had got into Canada to spy for the Soviet Union. Then he turned sides and started working for the Canadian security services.
In a twist, we was betrayed to the Russians by an RCMP officer who sold out his country for a few thousand dollars. Gideon was sent back to Russia and presumed dead.
But there was another twist to the story that no one saw coming.

great story! a few things popped into my head while listening. First, the ease at which "Gideon" quickly fell in love with a soldier's wife. Perhaps becoming a double agent WAS his mission from the USSR. And perhaps the Canadians over time suspected that, and weren't 100% sure that their double officer was on their side. but they didn't want to be seen as getting rid of him, so instead, the Canadians had him outed by a "rogue" agent, who then mysteriously gets off light, and then can be used as someone the USSR thinks can be bought. Also, Gideon probably wasn't killed on purpose, went to ground, and was reactivated after the cold war. We then took him back-but had him followed to see if he could be used again. Or... maybe not.

That's because the documentary never mentioned what "David Soboloff'"s actual mission in Canada was. Running a spy cell of 11 aeronautical engineers, and a successful grab of top secret information (five pounds of documents and photographs) on the most highly advanced jet interceptor in the west, in the middle of the Cold War, then in the design and construction stage. Funny they left that part out....

(Gideon) he's still alive because that was his mission all along to be a trator and see how they handle those cases (knowing canada would either applie or follow a similar procedure as the M16 or the CIA) ,because west superpowers would get involved if an irregal was returned.
