There is a rare old growth forest in Revelstoke that’s also home to endangered mountain caribou, and saving it might help keep the herd alive. But finding a balance between logging and preservation of the forest is not easy.

On Vancouver Island they’re trying to cut down old growth cedar for roof shingles. The build code specifies how tight the rings need to be, which only exists in old growth.

It would make more sense to preserve the cedar trees and require people to aluminum roofing. This is insanity.

Jan 25, 2023, a miracle happened, 75000 hectares in the Incomappleux River Valley is now protected from logging. The area has been inaccessible due to a landslide in 2005 which took out the road so access is difficult.

I cannot believe any of them were cut down. The old growth trees are more ancient than our civilization. Protect our land, stop destroying nature that you cannot replace.

If trees like this really are being cut down for simple stuff like pulp for paper production, then I think the deregulation of hemp needs to happen sooner rather than later.

I think this is a perfect example that the caucasoid is not an ancient race because they are cutting down the timber throughout the world if they were an ancientrace there would be no Old timber existing today.

Caribou last herd in lower 48 in eastern Washington was lost to wolves, no deforestation nothing but the state not taking care and managing the predator problem.

Logging of the old growth that the caribou depend on for food (lichen) caused their population to decline, and the wolves also added to that decline pushing them to extinction. We used to have the caribou up the valley from us here in Kimberley, but they are all gone now. When you destroy the habitat, it throws everything out of balance. Everything is connected.

@@kootenayjoel Thumbs up to your comment and of course before the development of the region the wolf and caribou populations were stable. Human beings are destabilizing wildlife populations all over the world. Sad.

Just to be clear the loss of the South Selkirk caribou herd was largely because of habitat loss and cumulative effects happening north of the border. Predation is the proximate cause of decline, habitat loss from logging is the underlying cause.
