Cornish Walking Trails

Күн бұрын

Sometimes we stumble across surveys that rank towns and cities across the UK: 'The coolest place to live', 'The most depressing to live' or 'Best place to live!'. When they feature a town in Cornwall, it piques our curiosity and we feel compelled to visit and see if its true - tongue in cheek of course!
Recently a harbour village in Cornwall has been ranked the COOLEST PLACE TO LIVE in the UK and we took a look for ourselves. Join us on the trail of many cool things to see and do.

The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film around Cornwall and publish videos on KZbin, usually weekly. Sarah collects sea glass to add to paintings of local scenes which are sold on Etsy. The channel is a hobby that we fit around family and normal day jobs.
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
Frequently asked questions:
Do we have meet ups?
We are limited for time because we fit the channel around our family and jobs. We meet up with people who are Patrons and KZbin members, both on group walks and one-to-one. Why not join us for ad free content and bonus videos.
Unfortunately we do not have scope for further meet ups but if you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book title. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dogs, perhaps you can make up your own name for them.

used to live in Norfolk, Sarah. So I know Wells next the sea very well. There are prettier villages along the North Norfolk coast, but Wells is OK. Sadly the whole area has been pretty much bought up by Londoners for second homes....earning it the 'Chelsea on Sea' title. Something you will be only too aware of living in Cornwall, with all the local issues/resentments this brings.

The model village is quite cool, as is the shell house. You nailed the price on Miranda cottage, Sarah! Sadly, charming places getting priced out seems to be a worldwide issue. Nothing stays the same, sadly. I'm sure the man fixing the boat in that vintage photo never thought his image would be floating around the world a hundred years later. Always fun when you compare then and now photos.

I love Polperro, despite its slightly 'Kitsch tourist honey trap' persona. I love the walk down into the village....everyone makes such an effort with their little gardens/flowers. Polperro remains the only place where I managed to try a 'sweet and savoury' pasty....half meat, half apple. Very nice it was too, but I haven't managed to find one again there in recent years. Loved that painting of the blue Peter Inn at the Gallery (16:07), its so detailed it could be a photograph.

Wells next the sea has a huge flat sand beach, the tide comes in so fast they say it travels faster than any man can run, so there are people in canoes who travel out via the water ways that go up the sides of the banks and they warn walkers that the tide is coming in so they turn back in time, there used to be alarms on the beach that sounded but I’m not sure they are still there or not. It’s one of the most gorgeous places in the UK. The tide circles the sand flats to form a shallow river between the main beach and the flats so it’s safe for kids to swim and use inflatables, with care and supervision of course.

It's more quiet. We have lots of rain and it is windy - ideal for safe storm watching! Lots of the touristy places will be closed, so you will need to head to larger towns or in land to find pubs etc. Personally, I love it here in the winter - no traffic jams so journeys are half the time, car parks have spaces, restaurants have tables, and I don't feel 'suffocated' in the main tourist spots! It's just a lot more chilled, Sarah :)

Wells Next the Sea is a lovely village/town on North Norfolk Coastline. The stretch of road between Hunstanton & Cromer is a lovely winding drive along through pretty countryside & coastline. Blakeney Point halfway along the route has trips out to see the Seals in their natural environment. Delightful part of the UK!! As is Polperro, although the car park there was extortionately priced last time we were in Cornwall!! Must be even worse now. But it is indeed a picturesque place to visit & I seem to remember had the best Cornish Ice Cream I ever had!! x J x

We holidayed in Polperro many times in the 80s and 90s in our younger days and always loved doing so, those were the days when the horse drawn bus was there and the village was truly bustling, but recently i feel that it has lost some of it's charm and atmosphere, there was shop selling paintings on the Warren with a quite eccentric lady with an old cash register, the bakery was in an old building on a street corner and had a certain quirky charm, you could hardly get through the streets as they were so crowded, but now it feels a bit lost and there are just not the amount of people there on the rare occasions we have visited recently. Still Love the Polperro to Looe coast path walk which we did regularly, but cheated and got the bus back from Looe to Polperro.

Another great video, many thanks! I've lived in Looe for many years, so I know Polperro very well. I love it, but it's never struck me as a particularly cool place! I guess everyone has their own idea of what is "cool", but like you, Sarah, I reckon it needs to have some "edgyness" about it, and to appeal to young people maybe, to have more a "cult" appeal than appealing to the average person, maybe a place with a great "alternative" scene . That "number of independent shops per population" statistic seems a bit arbitrary and definitely favours places with lots of holiday homes. Having an art scene & a music scene is great, but is all art and music cool? Old-fashioned pictures of boats in harbours? Or three old bearded guys in a pub singing "What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor"? There are some cool things about Polperro - the Blue Peter for one, there is some great art too, and some good music during the festival,; lovely, but generally not a massive amount of coolness. For me Calstock in the 1990s was a brilliantly cool place; beautiful, but largely unknown to tourists. a great "hippy"/alternative/community atmosphere and amazing anarchist/punk/reggae bands in the village hall every month! The coolest place in Cornwall now is St Just in my opinion (the Penwith one that is)!

Polperro and all these other little places have always been in existence and the Cornish just take them for granted as 'just another village'. Now, suddenly, it's all over the internet (just like Porthcurno). I don't understand why it is rated 1 when Looe has so much on offer than Polperro, which basically shuts down out of season, whereas Looe is open 24/7 with a residential population. It has a nightclub, bars, restaurants, pubs, market, two supermarkets and even a nice sandy beach! I notice there are no local facilities for local people in Polperro e.g. grocers, supermarket, day to day supplies, just touristy shops, which proves nobody lives there full time. £350k for that cottage is crazy really. There is no parking anywhere near, so where do you park your car? Maybe someone who doesn't drive would buy it, but it's just not practical considering you would need a car to get to the nearest supermarket. Is there even a bus service? It just winds up being another holiday cottage. The place doesn't do anything for me, same with Mevagissey and seagulls s**tting everywhere. I have been to Wells-Next-The-Sea. I went there in 1999 when it was the Cornwall Eclipse and stayed there for a week. It was so quiet and it was a beautiful sunny day and the eclipse could be seen really clearly (it was a 3/4 one). Marlow is very upmarket and being on the Thames adds to its attraction. Tracey xx

I am one of the few who can't stand Polpero, to crowded and over priced, if the tide is out just smell the mud. By the way Morecambe is scheduled to get an Eden Project North in the next couple of years.

Unfortunately people buy up places as second homes or to let out as holiday lets & so the full time population dwindles.

If you run a tinpot organisation and want to raise your profile, organise a bogus survey. Wells-next-the-Sea is not the most attractive place on the North Norfolk Coast. It was a working port with old warehouses and those hoists on the front for lifting and lowering goods to and from the upper floors, many converted into THAT SORT of expensive residential development. I suspect that it is on the list because of the yaghting fraternity who have a strong presence there and answer that sort of survey. Just to the West is Holkham Hall ..... and to the East, is Stiffkey, most famous for its' one time rector who in 1932 was defrocked on grounds of immorality. The Bishop of Norwich was reluctant to act against the Reverend Harold Davidson but, once the newspapers had got hold of the story, upon legal advice, he felt forced to convene a "consistory court". The bishop remained reluctant throughout. The Rev Davidson claimed to have a mission to bring prostitutes to God and possibly his work was sometimes of a practical nature. Much was made of the lancing of a boil on the bottom of one Rose Ellis. The newspapers of a certain type had a field day and much was exaggerated. The village name of STIFFkey did not help. It is, I think, true to say that he was generally a good man who was much maligned but the story is good for a laugh. He took to being a seaside showman and, in 1937, was mauled to death by one of his fellow showmen, namely a lion. Although not flavour of the month in the Church hierarchy, he had been popular with a number of the locals and his body lies in the local churchyard.

It’s pretty but living there, cool? Not so sure. With the full time population decline going as it is, in a few short decades it will be a ghost town (Village). Extortionate rental rates and weather dependent. 2 weeks on the beach in any Caribbean island would be cheaper.
