'Scary': Christian Baker Who Won After Refusing Gay Wedding Cake Shares Tough Journey

A California baker is elated over her religious freedom win after a judge ruled she was within her rights to deny making a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. Cathy Miller, owner of Tastries Bakery in Bakersfield, California, made headlines this week when she won her battle against the California Department of Fair Housing and Employment, which sued Miller over what it saw as intentional discrimination. The state unsuccessfully argued the baker had violated the Unruh Civil Rights Act, a California law protecting people from discrimination at businesses based on age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, religion, and other factors. Miller shared how the five-year legal battle began, its impact, and her message for the couple at the center of it all. "I was shocked and I know they were upset, but I did not think that it would go this far," Miller said. "I did not realize that within two hours we would be bombarded by hate mail, death threats, rape threats. The media was storming into our bakery." Here's her story.

Perhaps it would be best if we, and I include myself, take pause to imagine if oneself was in the receiving end of what appears/appeared to be a violation of those rights. Beyond the rights issue alone, there is also the very real possibility that there couple wanting the cake are indeed Christians themselves. This happened long ago enough that there is much that's changed in our understanding of what Scripture does and does not say. It's understandable that people who have been hurt and marginalized their entire lives because of who they are could be angered by the refusal if service to this couple. The threats to the bakery owner and her employees were, however, absolutely inexcusable. The owner's attorney suggests that what she has suffered it's prescription. She herself does not and send to be a very kind woman who simply wishes to live what she believes. To even suggest that this reached the level of persecution, is to make a mockery of people who have truly been persecuted. No one in this story suffered persecution.

I have gay friends who know I don't agree with certain things, for the same biblical reasons, but they also know that I don't hate them. What surprises me about a situation such as this is the lesbian couple ended up being bigoted hypocrites. By dragging you through the judicial system because you disagreed with their beliefs really does show how one sided they are. They showed that they didn’t/don’t care about anyone else’s beliefs/feelings but their own. You were respectful of them as human beings and even referred them to another local baker but within mere minutes of leaving your shop they literally started a hate war against you…they showed absolutely no respect for you and your beliefs. Makes me wonder whether they already knew of your business standards and purposely used you to further their personal agendas. I hope their legal fees were as steep as yours probably were.

She was very nice about it and even forwarded them to someone in the LGBTQ community who she thought did good work. She could see how well the other lady did even though she didn't agree with her lifestyle and I think that was very loving and kind.
