I remember watching this series and being instilled with confidence. So I started to "build" an 03 Honda F4i I got for $600 non running. A factory fuel pump from a Ford F150 Harley Davidson(plugged right in, just had to modify the filter for pick up)later and it ran and rode great. Ebay fairings, bolt kit, tires, fluids, gaskets, covers, levers, grips...every little bit later. $1800 for a sweet looking F4i. Sold it for $3500 and bought a 2015 Kawasaki Vulcan S.

Very similar story with mine. Paid $1,500 for an '02 954rr with 28,000 mi. from someone who thought it had too many issues to deal with. Replaced steering stem bearings, chain and sprockets, deleted the exhaust flapper and replaced the ostrich skin seat with an OEM from ebay. All-in was $1,850. Rode it for 9 months and made a straight trade for an '03 RC-51, which was a bucket-list bike for me.

@upsidedowndog12565 жыл бұрын
For the money you have in it that is pretty good. Free fairings and existing good tires helped a whole lot. To go much further dechroming it would put you upside down financially but it seems a worthy project for a nice bike like that.

DONT USE DIESEL OIL IN YOUR BIKES ANYMORE They recently removed the ingredients that helped maintain wet clutches in motorcycles for emissions purposes. One of the main ones is zinc if I remember correctly. USE MOTORCYCLE OIL, DONT CHEAP OUT.
@bad001bd3 жыл бұрын
Late, but this is complete bullshit. Motorcycle specific oil (or really any oil these days) won't have much zinc (or phosphorus) because those elements are hard on catalytic converters. Nothing in the JASO specs require a minimum of zinc, in fact, they have a limit on zinc specified.
@dadboddamien2 жыл бұрын
Like Ben said... As long as it's JASO certified you're good to go in a bike

Personally I would check the tire manufacture date on the sidewall. I know you said they were put on in 15-16 but if they sat in a dealer for a year or two before being put on the bike they could be 5-6+ years old. Motorcycle tires are pron to get hard as they age (especially for softer sport bike tires) and that means reduced grip. I trust you know what you're doing but tires are the last thing I'm willing to skimp on. Great job on the build, cheers!
@HeroRR5 жыл бұрын

Did you try sandblasting the chrome? Maybe you said you did in a previous episode and I missed it, but Harbor Freight has some pretty cheap blasting cabinets or there's probably a shop nearby that could do it for you. Having it sandblasted is also perfect paint prep too so win win remove chrome and be ready for paint.

come a long ways and a great bike to ride in the end. But as the saying goes a project bike is never finished. Ever! My 2nd bike was a 1987 fz600. Great fun bike. Had it for a long long time and nope it was never done. I had to get front fairings/ repainted it since it was painted a horrible magenta colour. Till the day it was donated to friends so they could use the engine... it was never complete.... 10 years later!

Not a true cost unless you cost out everything that you put into it such as the ceramic coating and rivets. Whether you bought it for another bike or not, there is some cost attributable to the materials used. You should also add in the normal cost of the fairings too. At any rate, it's a nice bike if it runs as nice as it looks.
