CBS Saturday Supercade - Full Broadcast Restored - 9/17/83 (reupped)

I grabbed this off [xxxxxxxxxx] KZbin before the videos went down. It seems they were removed for personal reasons and I have been given the okay to reupload whatever was there, but I do hope his channel returns there at some point. The Supercade restoration stuff was very high quality work.

Good catch! Kinda fitting, considering back in 1980, Nintendo approached King Features Syndicate to produce a Popeye arcade game. When they refused, the company had Shigeru Miyamoto convert Radar Scope machines into Donkey Kong, which would become a huge success. This made KFS change their minds and Nintendo released the Popeye arcade game in 1983.

Just did! No doubt Ruby-Spears (who did Saturday Supercade) might have asked the CBS folks to allow Hanna-Barbera (who was doing "The All-New Popeye Hour" about this time) for the right to do a cross-promotional one-shot gag like this (though it might have been because Popeye forgot his spinach or Olive needed him not to be late --and thus no "monkeying around" with Donkey Kong this bit).

When I got Pitfall 2 decades ago, I noticed the addition of Rhonda and seeing Quickclaw shaking in fear sort of reminded me of an American Saturday morning cartoon. Years later, I found out they really were characters from a Saturday cartoon and now I finally got to see Quickclaw in action. (This was never televised in my country) Thanks.

I was barely 3 when this show actually aired. I have very vague recollections of watching it. More people definitely remember stuff like Captain N and the SMB Super Show at the tail end of the 80's and probably thought those were the first real instances of a video game related show or cartoon, but Saturday Supercade beat those out the door by about 7 years. I had almost completely forgotten about it until I watched the intro on youtube several years back and the song sparked the memory of having watched it back in the day.

I remember this well too. This was from Season 1. "Pitfall" rotated with "Q*Bert" for the third cartoon every other week. Season two had "Q*Bert" promoted to regular weekly, with "Kangaroo" replacing "Frogger" for first cartoon, and "Space Ace" replacing "Donkey Kong Jr." for last. Marvin Kaplan voiced Shelly Turtle in "Frogger," then Sidney Squirrel in "Kangaroo".

One thing I give props to Ruby-Spears for with Saturday Supercade is how they find some interesting ways to tell stories for some of the games that got cartoons here when the plot is less than easy to work with for sure. Like with the concept for Frogger being interesting with his being a reporter, or the way Q*Bert was done, same with Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong, Jr.

It would be more impressive if they weren't mostly re-skins of already-milked Hanna Barbera shows. I like the concept of imagining video game characters as 80's cartoons but I don't want the execution to almost LITERALLY be repeats of Scooby Doo, Blue Falcon & Dynomutt, and Snorks episodes I had drilled into my skull as a kid.

I would have liked to see some other arcade games made into cartoons like this like Burger Time, Pengio, Rampage, Dig Dug, and Mousetrap.

Burger Time and Pengo would probably have fit well into the Saturday Supercade format. I'd feel Rampage would work way better as a dark comedy 90's cartoon. Dig Dug has had some representation in some adaptations of other Namco products (The "Mappy" webseries comes to mind), but not his own series.

Well he didn't have any mushrooms, starmen, fireballs, or fancy raccoon/frog suits to help him back then. Just a hammer, a butterfly net, and an airheaded niece/girlfriend who often sided with his greatest foe. No wonde he sucked at it.

What’s really creepy. Jack Black did a commercial for super pitfall as a child back then. Fast forward to recently, in Jumanji, his character looks a lot like cartoon Pitfall Harry! Uncanny!

This was a fun cartoon show, but wasn't it weird that most of the toons weren't like the games. Frogger doesn't hop across roads and rivers dodging cars, gators, and whatever. Mario doesn't try to save Pauline from Donkey Kong, and jr doesn't save his dad from Mario.

It is said that Filmation hated Supercade internally and that is part of the reason master film for many of the contents is hard to find. Donkey Kong Jr. being tooled into a Scrappy expy probably was a factor in retrospect.

People always talk with such fondness of "80s saturday morning cartoons"... conveniently leaving out 99% of it was pure ASS animation, ASS voices, redeemed only by, sometimes, catchy opening themes. The week-long shows are often incorrectly stated as saturday ones.

@@w1975b Yeah, you named some good ones, and some bad ones lol. Thundarr was so dark, and surprisingly decent for cookie-cutter Hanna Barbera. I liked Mighty Orbots, Galaxy High... I know Muppet Babies had tons of episodes, so i think that might've been a daytime one too. Oh, since you mention Dungeons and Dragons... you can see the final episode now! On youtube, it's called "Requiem". Fans got a hold of the script and managed to somewhat animate a "reading" of it!
