Think is, thanks to SNW, Chapel is now even worse. We find out she and him dated 12 years prior, then in the Pon Farr episode, she tried to manipulate him twice. Even continuity is off. Pike in the pilot said "Sorry Number 1 (same woman as in SNW 12 years prior) Im not used to having a woman on MY bridge." 12 years piror there's Number One, Ortegga, asian girl, La'an AND Uhura.

Best part of this episode aside from the Vulcan Death Grip moment was Spock just orating a full narrative confession of his crimes just to buy time for the Enterprise to get the Romulan cloaking device. Spock had no intention of being rescued; he merely surmised that he should delay action to ensure the mission succeeds. And the recitation of his crimes was so perfect!

Joanne Linville was 40 years old when she did this role. You have to admit that she rocks in the Romulan Commander's uniform. But there is no doubt she had the gravitas to play the role. Of all the typical female casting TOS did, they needed someone with some depth to play opposite of Nimoy. Her daughter Amy was born 3 years later.

Perhaps the logical fallacy of the Slippery Slope. If integrity is vital to being a Vulcan, but you chose to violate that for the military survival of the Federation, then what's next? Preventing the destruction of the Enterprise? Stopping someone killing its crew? Or killing the Captain? It's like the means v. the ends: what ends justify what means?

A 1994 special issue of Entertainment Weekly devoted entirely to Star Trek had an article ranking the Star Trek TOS episodes from best to worst. This episode came in at #9. It's entry goes as follows: "Slick _Mission: Impossible_ send-up: Kirk poses as a pointy-eared Romulan while Spock charms a cloaking device out of a female Romulan commander. Bonus points: Fake Vulcan 'death grip'".

Twilight Zone (one very good episode). One Step Beyond (two episodes and she was really strong in one of them). A few movies. Gunsmoke (a pretty good character). Have Gun (maybe, I vaguely recall at least one but could be wrong), Hawaii 5 O, many others. She was a very good character melodrama actress before her retirement. She had a bearing and swagger. She was best playing women of elite backgrounds.
@FekLeyrTarg6 жыл бұрын
What's your opinion of Amy Rydell's (Joanne Linville's daughter) performance as the Romulan Commander in "To Boldly Go"? She almost looks and sounds like her mother. :-)
@STho2056 жыл бұрын
FekLeyrTarg's Videos. I think she came as close one could get to her Mom's performance in 68. If you watch Rydell in her father's biopic about James Dean, when she was acting in her own style, you'll see she played a casual style supporting character well. Playing this stiff, hard Newport News style woman her mother played in 68, was probably outside her modern training. Overall, taking all the scenes as an average I think she did fine. The romantic dream of Spock, she really nailed that. I personally think this episode was the best tragic story for these TOS characters since Wrath of Kahn. If all the actors were professional, then it may have been the best conclusion the series could have, and should have had many years ago.

I never bought that scene. Even when I was a kid watching it when it first aired. I was just 8 yrs old when it first aired, but my inquisitive mind told me it was a load of bunk. You would think a Romulan Commander would know if the Vulcan's had a death grip. I mean the moment Nurse Chapel heard the phrase spoken she said "There's no such thing as a Vulcan Death Grip". If a human knew, you would suspect a Romulan who is a distant relative of Vulcans would definitely know. Being a Commander of a ship she should have known she was being hoodwinked.
