I grew up in Swampscott between 1962 and 1974 and NEVER did I EVER hear that the "Big Blue" was supposed to be the ocean. The "Big Blue" nickname simply evolved from the school colors of blue and white. The original mascot/name of the high school team was the Swampscott Sculpins, but subsequent team members weren't enthusiastic about being identified with a strange-looking fish, so that name fell by the wayside generations ago and is almost forgotten.

yea lol Im a freshman in the highschool now and the flipping mascot is a pillow XD

I live in Marblehead, and I thought the same thing whenever I went down one town south. Also, now Swampscott has another thing to remember - a Karen who complained about arrows on the sidewalk (this is real. Search it up)

@@tsunamix0147 OMG, I just found the video of her! A MAGA woman in Swampscott! I hope she's an aberration. It seemed pretty progressive when I was growing up there.

I've read that Coach Bondelevitch changed the name from Sculpins to Big Blue. He was a living legend fifty years ago, back when I was in high school. We had such a winning streak that lasted for several seasons, to be broken by St. John's Prep, yet we continued to win after that one loss. I was in the SHS Marching Band for six years, and one of the TV networks filmed up playing the Star Spangled Banner, which TV stations would play before retiring for the night. I remember the New Ocean House fire, the pond with the weeping willows in Phillips Park, later drained (and the willows were cut down). The woolen Swampscott jackets, the fire department opening the hydrant at Clark Elementary School come wintertime for two ice rinks, one for hockey, one for skaters, the balloon lady at the football games, and the high school way up on the hill--those were the days, my friend.

@@howardmerken758 I think we were at SHS around the same time. I was Class of '74 and I share those memories. Interesting that the beloved Coach Bondelevitch changed the name. (His wife Dorothy was also one of my favorite teachers at Hadley School.)

Got my first job serving coffee, sandwiches and donuts at the counter of Brill's Drug Store in Swampscott back in about 1965. Lived on Puritan Rd with the ocean for our backyard.

Spent my youth here. Mapledale Place :-) I still miss it, though NOT the winters..lol I see there is a new Restaurant..Shame the old Fried clam /Ice cream place isn't still there. It was the BEST!

I remember Mapledale...I was routinely kicked off that street; well, dead end street.
