Twins Carter and Jack Hanson loved the game Battleship, which led to a family vacation to see the Yorktown, a retired aircraft carrier. There, they learned about a WWII veteran named Robert Harding. The three began emailing and formed a lasting friendship. Steve Hartman shares more in "On the Road."

They really weren’t the greatest generation at all. Obviously these veterans are heroes, undeniably some of the greatest men and women to ever live and a definite exception to what I’m about to say, but don’t pretend that the 40s weren’t only good if you were a white man. There’s a reason why when an old person makes a racist comment the excuse is “oh they’re from a different time.” Also they’re far from the only heroes to fight and die for freedom, that’s part of pretty much every generation. Doesn’t take away from these heroic individuals but saying they’re from the greatest generation is just silly. They’re the greatest of their generation for sure though.

I love it when Steve H. does an update on a previous story. What's great about this one is that I think a lot of kids would have gone on to a new interest or thought that staying in touch with some old former sailor was kid stuff once they entered high school. But he's clearly become a member of their family and vice versa.

I wish I could’ve talked to my grandpa about his time in the Korean War but I didn’t want to bring back any bad memories and hurt the man who gave so much for us. I don’t know if he wouldn’t want to say anything or be excited to tell me. But I wish I would’ve made the effort. Most of all I wish I got a couple more “I love you”s in before he passed. I never disrespected him but I could’ve been there for him more.

As a Hindu, I'd like to believe that those two brothers were drawn to that particular ship and to Mr Harding because they were probably connected to him and the ship in their past lives and were probably taken before their time. Most of us don't remember our previous birth but we believe that the interests we pursue in this birth were those that we wished to but were unable to in previous lives.

I use to care less about history. But after I seen in todays world people trying to ease history I started studying it. There are so many things most people have no clue that happened in World War I and II. The Civil war is another thing I have study. I have started studying the Wars that the Roman Empire wages.
