The fight between 64-year-old Marston Riley and the 14-year-old student erupted over the teen being reprimanded for not wearing the proper school uniform. Cell phone video recorded by other students in the class captured the teen throwing a basketball at Riley before going on a racist tirade. Dave Lopez reports.

The whole system is failing both the students and teachers. If proper discipline and appropriate physical and psychological punishment was allowed to be used from day 1 these kids would know about consequences and never push a teacher to throw a punch. The legal system gives kids immunity to do and say shocking things with no recourse.

@@lifeisneverfair I agree, but when I went to school teachers had some authority to discipline, including verbal, the cane and expulsion. Now a kid can be a little angel at home and a complete ratbag at school and teachers have little ammunition to force a change.

I was jumped by 4 boys in my class. They were big trouble to every teacher for at least 3 years. They were in the office for something everyday and if it wasn’t the teachers, the bus drivers had them in the office. Our principle did nothing. I had to go to the emergency room and I was fired! The school board did nothing to help me. This also happened in front of 23 students and 2 other teachers.

@redcomic619 So you agree with a 64 y/o adult hitting a 14 y/o minor in front of other minors repeatedly with a blunt object even after another adult tried to brake the fight? That is not the proper way to "handle" a "disrespectful punk". I'm sure when he was hired he signed a contract with a Code of Conduct. I wonder if hitting a minor is among the acceptable ethics.

My best friend was a teacher for 30 years. The last few years have gotten so bad with extreme disrespect towards teachers. A student punched him from behind, and he ended up in the ER. The "consequence" the student received was a counseling session between the teacher and the student to help find common grounds. The school did this because the district adapted Restorative Justice practices as a way to lower their number of misbehaving students. Of all the years he devoted his life to helping students, all the outside of contracted paid hours he volunteered to tutor students to get to grade level, all that he's ever known, he walked out. It tore him apart emotionally. He was replaced quickly. It goes to show that you are replaceable in the workplace, do your best as an employee, but never let your job be a priority over your well-being, never. He is now in a much healthier environment, enjoying his life and new career.

I was a teacher. I’ve experienced disrespect from children. It is amazing how things have changed so much. The behavior of children has evolved into something disgraceful. Many students are disrespectful and violent. The problem is that nothing effective is being done to correct the behavior. Students are not afraid of the consequences. Many times, parents don’t do anything to help find a solution to the problem because they don’t care. Good teachers are not getting paid what they should be considering all the work and stress they have to endure.

Just Shepherd The kid did this in school with his teacher. When you take a job as a teacher you are accepting the responsibility that comes along with being in charge of children. One of those responsibilities is knowing how to defuse a situation. A teachers actual job is not only to teach the children, but take an authoritative stance in how you maintain and watch the children. This teacher wasn't trying to defuse the situation. He lost his shit and attacked a 14 year old CHILD with a blunt object. Then, on top of that, once the security officer broke it up, he went back for more. If you think that is justified then, I'm sorry, but you are a scumbag. A responsible adult would have never flown into a rage like that. What if he had seriously hurt that kid? Would you still be justifying it? It's a good thing Mr. Riley doesn't know how to fight. I mean, did you see that kid clock him in the face when they squared up? Dudes a chump, haha.

Discipline and violence are completely different. You exercise discipline with a purpose, to teach the kids values, actions and consequences. This was brutality, plain and simple. Both the student and the teacher should face the consequences of their actions accordingly. And the rule of law always applies.
@fungoorstitch

Discipline is subjective and can be administered through violence or nonviolence, for better or worse, good or for evil. All legal systems discipline through violence at some stage, so they can be the same thing. In any event, the teacher most certainly did show restraint. According to the news, everyone the kid came into contact with did for a long, long time dealing with his foul tongue. The teacher could have taken the kid's head off any time during the skirmish if he wanted, but he didn't. Back when things were as simple as they were always supposed to be, the teacher might have towed the kid outside by the ear and whipped him with a hickory branch, and that would have been the end of a lesson learned. Slowly but surely, people are starting to come back around to that because the results speak for themselves. I for one hope the teacher never, ever apologizes or capitulates in any way, and if the question was on today's voting ballot, I have no doubt people would probably just come out to agree.

Here when a adult would hit a child all would go agains the adult as we understand what is a child someone whose brain is not yet developed, his body is stil growing so we would calm and talk sense into the child or call another teacher or police so we, they could handle the child the right way. Yes we sometimes have people like this man but he would be punished for hit a child. When adults have no mercy then children wil be the adults without mercy show mercy so that you child wil be merciful child, adult. Im sure this boy has problems at home someone should always try to talk with such children and ask them how they are and that it is not oke to be racist and what is the good way of communicating and treatment of others and if he has problems he can come talk. In our school always when a child behive bad or dont come all days school, the school caregiver would talk to the child and ask how it is going and would for small things talk to parents to children so this behive we dont have so much. If someone is racist they would call parents and talk to child, parents immediately. This is the way to learn and make childeren beter. I have such a child who is someone who looks for problems but i always talk nice and stil say i love you and stil let know i care. So my child wil learn what is mercy , how should an adult behive im aways clear in what is oke and what not and where my boundary is, my child would come and say sorry mama that i misbehave and gives me hugs so this is us building a child not hurt it and hit it then you put it down and hurt it so it wil never grow the right way and you wil have problems with them till they are old as they never had mercy so they are merciles.
