As a legal immigrant of long standing, a Florida resident, naturalized citizen, and a law-abiding taxpayer, I am concerned at Cordero’s initial statement, that law enforcement officers would not be permitted to ask for immigration status. Her later statement does not convince me. Obviously her sympathies lie with illegal immigrants. The public should watch her closely. Immigration enforcement is not a Sheriff responsibility. A Sheriff can't be forced to go after illegal immigrants. The Sheriff however can provide data about those booked into the county jail. BTW, for anyone who has a problem where the line of responsibility is drawn, you need to know that federal law enforcement officers do not investigate state crimes unless they are part of a state law enforcement task force.
