Already a local hero, Jim McIngvale - known as "Mattress Mack" - has become a national symbol of hope in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. On Sunday, he welcomed hundreds of people looking for refuge into two of his Gallery Furniture stores in Houston and also sent trucks into the flood looking for those in need of safe passage. David Begnaud reports.

I'm starting to feel bad for the man as reality sets in my thoughts. He's doing such a great thing but is going to be faced with some very difficult decisions. Through his kindness he has put himself in a position to have to either kick people out, or shelter and feed them for the long haul.. And I mean the LONG haul.. He mentioned 7 days being a ballpark number for the worst case scenario. I wouldn't expect the man to care for so many for such an extended period, but I'd imagine many will be needing a lot of help for much longer than 7 days.

He's so sad remembering how well they raised him, probably thinking about thanking them if he could. Also probably thinking how Happy and Proud they are to see what he's doing. I can seen lines of vehicles from all over Texas causing traffic jams to load up on his furniture. This sort of act can often be an inadvertent good investment in public relations. I'm sure that is not his motive but you can't buy that kind of publicity. When I was a child there was a gentleman who we called Santa Claus. We knew he wasn't the real Santa Claus but he might as well have been. He owned a big toy store, the only one in the town I grew up in. Every year he closed his store the day before Christmas when everyone else kept their businesses open. Then, working on a list provided by local churches and charities, he and his employees drove a fleet of trucks around town and delivered toys to children in need and they often didn't finish their deliveries until after sun up on Christmas day. He did have a long white beard and he dressed the part too. Imagine being an underprivileged seven year old child and a man in a red suit and long white beard pulls up a truck in front of your house Christmas morning (the truck had a sleigh and reindeer painted on the side) and opens up the back, sets up some stairs and invites you to come into the back to pick out some toys. He let you pick out any three toys you wanted. Many were quite expensive. After that his store would close down for a couple of days. He paid all his employees extra bonuses for their participation on Christmas eve and Christmas day and I doubt any refused. Then he gave them all a few days off with pay to enjoy with their own families. The rest of the year his toy store was the busiest in that part of the state and it was no wonder why. Everyone knew what he did. He really lived up to his motto "We make children happy!" In my town, everyone believed in Santa Claus!

Jason Castro, this man called Jim the Mack probably need not advertise again. This city will NEVER forget him. I want to be bold to say that most of the people that their furnitures were damaged by the storm are going to his stores. Wow! I have no words to describe that man. I am glad that I share the same city with him. He's always been like that. His heart is the reason. As for me, from now on if I want to spend any money on any furniture I'm going to the GF.

DoF - Just saw this question today. Many thanks for your concern. Nobody in my family - more than 40 people - flooded. Miraculously, my mother's house in Green Trails (think Barker Cypress dam and flood plane) did not flood. I got a brother similar to Mattress Mack and he owns a big auto repair shop and is also a Fire Chief in West Houston. So, he was out the entire time rescuing folks. Thank you for your prayers and concerns, again. I'm moving back home to Houston in the next two months after being in Pittsburgh for 10 years. It'll be great being back in the loving arms of my family and my beloved home city.

People like you give a bad name to your religion, so you hate on others because they don't believe in your god? There are a lot of religions on this planet, and there have been many more. So you want anyone to suffer simply because they don't follow your specific religion? What a good representative of your religion you are.

How does what Toolman wrote, translate to "hate" and "want(ing) anyone to suffer"? It doesn't. Toolman was writing in reference to prophecy, not hate. When he wrote the contextually obvious figure-of-speech > "let the Atheists suffer", that was in reference to their angst that they will disapprove of the above "God Bless" remark. One has to dishonestly embellish what was actually said in order to claim that Toolman said anything "hateful" or of bad representation. What you're doing is creating false accusations in order to pressure people to censor themselves unnecessarily, to surrender their freedom of speech, especially the ones you're targeting. It's Social Pressure, and using Social Engineering Provocateurs online to pressure people through false accusations. You're accusing Toolman of being hateful, when he wasn't. Are they paying you enough to do this " job"?
@nunyabiznez6381
@nunyabiznez6381 6 жыл бұрын
I am an atheist. I don't get mad when people speak kindly of others. The sentiment is intended as a good gesture so why should anyone get mad? It seems to me you have a lot of hate in your heart. I don't believe in fairy tales but of someone says "may the Easter Bunny bless you" I would not be offended. If my Muslim friend says "May Allah bless you" I am neither angered nor offended. Most atheists would not. I seem to remember a nice man about 2000 years ago spoke of love. Perhaps you should pay more attention to his wisdom and a little less attention to the hate in your heart. I don't have to believe in magic to embrace his philosophy which you do not seem to do.
@nunyabiznez6381
@nunyabiznez6381 6 жыл бұрын
The phrase "let [fill in your choice of demographic] suffer" is a phrase of hate. Claiming that some ancient writing says it's OK to say doesn't change that fact. And for your information, most of us atheists don't have any "angst" about people offering blessings to others. I am neither offended nor angered. Occasionally amused depending on the context. Why would I be offended by someone offering good intentions? I don't know any atheist who would be so offended. I would never ask you to surrender your freedom of speech. I would merely point out that occasionally we perhaps should not say everything we have a right to say. Any speech that causes hurt or pain should be avoided. Any speech that brings happiness and joy should be embraced. Would that not be in keeping with the philosophy a certain wise man who lived about 2000 years ago?
@cacatr4495
@cacatr4495 6 жыл бұрын
+nunya biznez If you'll honestly look around the comments on YT, they get mad all day long at mentions of God, blessings included. That was what, I believe, the commenter was pointing out, and that if they got mad, was the contextual figure of speech, that used the word " suffer". Dishonest people don't want to honestly comprehend figures of speech. Your failure to do so, doesn't equal hate in the writer's heart. These false accusations were, in essence, what he was pointing out. And here you demonstrate taking advantage of the opportunity to accuse. The Man that lived 2000 years ago and still does, was about living the truth as defined by God, with Love, not absent of the truth. Many are happy with lies; so now, many want lies to be honored, and the truth not to be spoken. There is no compatibility between between lies and truth. Lies always cause suffering.

I don't think he is that concerned about his loss of revenue and the good publicity his actions are earning him will most likely make up for it in increased business once he re-opens his store. I would imagine that once he does, if he just puts a little sign on each mattress reading "slightly used by our guests" he'll have no problem selling them above cost. Same goes for any other furniture in his shops and people will drive from miles away just to buy from him. If I was in need of furniture I would drive a truck to his store to buy some and I live in Florida.

Mattress Mack has been a true blessing to the city of Houston for a long time. Too bad the rest of the country is just now hearing about him. A true humanitarian and gentleman. He has spoiled Houston with generousity. Wishing him continued success. It is truly deserved.

Wow!! What an amazing guy with a heart of gold.. this is what a man of God does. He didn't think twice about opening his doors to help those in need. It amaze me that others that are wealthy hesitate and have to be asked to help those in need. This is truly a man of God, others that are wealthy should take his lead and yes he is an angel on earth. I'm in tears..😭😭😭he opened his doors on day one.. I am a true believer that he is a God sent. The little boy in the video is awesome👍👍👍and Mattress Mack is a blessing to many people... Much love to this man!!!!!

Mattress Mack has always been salt of the earth..When I was right out of college and trying to start my life, I didn't have a lot of money but I went to Gallery Furniture with $600 in my pocket...I got a 3 piece set for my living room a mattress set and a dresser..ALL FOR $600 and it was delivered same day...That's the day I actually met Mack...I told him my situation and he told his sales guy to get me fixed up. I remembered his generosity and knew I would be back...and boy was I...I came back 10 years later and spent around $30,000 furnishing my new home....I knew that if I ever got financially set I would be back to purchase from him and only him....He's a good man.

3:55 “Just look around. The man is an angel.” Couldn’t have said it better. He’s so much more than a furniture salesman, Mattress Mack is an absolute treasure to Houston and all the surrounding communities. He always takes initiative and leads during times of crisis. He helps people in need, refurnishes schools and elderly care centers, delivers food to the needy on thanksgiving, has toy drives on Christmas, I could go on and on, Mack is the real deal. A true and great servant.

Thank you, sir, for being a true hero by giving without reservation letting your heart be your guide. You are a shining example to us all! Mac has always been a class act and huge personality in this town. He truly is a Houston icon, now a legend. He will have streets, parks, buildings, schools named after him one day. He is also an avid sports collector and race horse owner. You can walk into Gallery Furniture on any given day and he is working the door or the front desk, personally showing you his merchandise. He'll even talk horse racing if you get him going. Not only will "Gallery Furniture really will save you money!"... It also save lives. Thanks, Mac.
