This is a cautionary tale. This is why as you get closer to that age group, you have to HUSTLE. - You MUST have multiple streams of income, like side gigs and investments. - You MUST throw in as much money as you legally can in your 401K and IRA. Remember that you can start collecting on it when you’re only 59 1/2, and if you have a disability, you can get a waiver to collect sooner. - You MUST cut your expenses and keep your debt at zero or nearly zero. The reality is that in a company layoff, unless you’re an executive, older workers are the first to go, and it takes an older worker longer to find a comparable position than a younger worker, so they have to take positions at a significant pay cut. You have to be prepared for a longer unemployment stretch or a lower pay grade.

It's even worse if you're an older worker and get caught up in a layoff, it's not easy finding another job when you're 55 to 60 years old. My wife has been looking for 8 months now and has had many interviews most of which seem to go fantastic, and then she gets the dreaded email we decided to go in another direction. In my mind that means a younger worker because my wife definitely has the experience.

And it's funny how it's backfiring. We see companies that try to push out all the older Gen X and replace them with Y and Z, then they complain how these younger kids quit too easily or they have no work ethic, or they thought they would be technologically advanced, but they're only advanced in things the company doesn't need. So perhaps those younger workers are savvy with social media, but have tons of trouble using MS Excel or something of that nature. Obviously this was 3 years ago when this article came out, so we didn't have the pandemic and the great resignation. I can understand a company not wanting to hire an older worker because that older worker is showing that they are behind on their skills, and worse, unwilling to be managed by someone younger. Just because you are older doesn't mean you should instantly be management. However, there are many older workers that have the skills, experience, and an incredible work ethic. They don't complain if they have to work past 5:00. They don't sit there expecting a raise and promotion every year just for showing up and doing the job. I'm also reading now how the unfortunate reality of many youth is that they spend so much time in regimented play time and activities that they are suddenly lacking in creativity and problem solving skills. I hope they can catch up, but it's again another reason why corporate America shouldn't just dismiss anybody above the age of 50.

Having gone through this being laid off at > 60. Realize you can’t stop people from considering your age even if you’re at the top of your game. As for your present employer they may think just how many years does she have left to give us ?? and you can’t stop that from happening ! But for NEW employers they CAN’T ask you your age! So don’t sabotage yourself by putting a birthdate, a graduation date or any other dates on your resume that will lead to your direct age !!! Once they meet you then you can win them over in person. Anytime you feel you are being discriminated against KEEP a daily journal 📓!!! Even tabs would be nice !!! The big picture will be eye opening !!! For example if you didn’t get training and they just threw you in there keep that UN-filled out training list ! KEEP hard copies of inappropriate e-mails and if there was an inappropriate in person meeting follow up with a summary e-mail to document it and run off your hard copy. Over 60 in the past and most likely still is a protected age. Although employers act as if they don’t know this ! And employment at will states do not help either ! If they are not giving you the tools to be successful in the beginning document, document, document. Good luck getting a lawyer to take it on though probably not enough money in it. These lay offs may effect the rest of your life’s earnings if it causes you to take early social security. HOLD up BEFORE you draw early social security. Social Security that increases 8 % per year especially in the later years to age 72 at which point it will not increase. WAIT as long as you can before taking social security !!! Increasing that monthly check as much as you can before you take it ! Talk to a financial advisor to make these choices. Don’t let the emotions of the situation cause other unwise choices like moving your 401/403 to accounts with more fees from a employer based accounts without fees. You will be tempted to make quick decisions just make sure it’s the best decision for you in long term. Last tip: in today’s world give up perfection for speed. Sometimes being older we default to just wanting it done right instead of just completing it ok with more speed ! Unfortunately time ran out before know your legal rights could be covered but important info here. 😊😊😊

I hate this "gotta keep up with technology" crap! Who do you think worked from using DOS, through windows in it's beginnings and all the freezes and lock ups, lost data, etc through today's point and click? WE DID!! My last job was hooking up NETWORKS together for college classrooms, sound systems and projection equipment. I had at least 3 training classes a year on updated technologies for the past 12 years. Most of the technologies they're looking for are really tight butts, smooth skin and possibilities for "fun times" (sexually). Plus our H(W)EALTH and liability insurance skyrockets putting even more of a burden on employers who want to hire and keep us old fogies on the job but it's more business prudent to let us go and hire young ones since all this "complicated" technology basically does all of the work today and all you need is a warm body there to push buttons or click an arrow to get the job done. And this trend is going to spread more and more down the line of employees until we're ALL unemployed to tech replacements. WAKE UP NOW because the water's already boiling for the upper 50% of workers and warming up fast for everyone else! We must CHANGE our social construct of having to work outside the home to be paid because that idea is ALREADY OBSOLETE! Employers, who you going to sell your goods or services to if nobody is working? That's why retail, restaurants and thousands of businesses are closing today because NOBODY'S working enough to BUY YOUR STUFF! THINK! Let common sense come back to your future planning. Politicians! It seems to me that just about every where I go lately I run into employees that can't do their job. And they're in ALL age groups. Or instructions on how to administer a medication to your animal or what date/time your dental appointment is after they set it up for you. And the list goes on and on. I've noticed too for a long time that especially corporations, expect the work from 1 employee to equal 5. In other words, work around the clock 24/7 or get fired. It's as simple as that! My husband works those sort of hours and he is past 55 and runs circles around the younger ones in technology and sleepless nights working. I've literally have known my husband to get 3 hours sleep in a weeks time. The downfall is these sort of hours can catch up to anyone no matter the age of the individual and the corporations don't care. They care about NUMBERS! That's it!

@@Filthy_Larry depending on the state in which you live, you have to tell whoever you're taping that the conversation is being recorded. Otherwise, it's inadmissible in a court of law. Ageism is becoming more & more prevalent thru out the country but very difficult to prove unfortunately

I keep looking at these comments and I kinda wish I didn’t. One of the women featured in this is a close family friend who even named me. I can speak and say that she did what she could to change and has consistently kept up with new technology and does the best she can to do what’s right. I can say that what happened isn’t fair. She’s far from conservative and absolutely not some MAGA nutcase. She’s kind and didn’t deserve what happened. There is blatant age discrimination within the system currently. A lot of folks are mistreated. And while I know a lot of the older generations hold some garbage beliefs, I can speak and defend my friend and say this is bs. I say this as a younger millennial. God, y’all suck.
@Whitewolf05165 жыл бұрын
So how does this topic now become political? Keep your politics at home. This discussion has nothing to do with MAGA. It has to do with age discrimination in the workplace. No one cares about your political crap
@PopMami4 жыл бұрын
@@Whitewolf0516 I believe what they're trying to say is that older people are discriminated against because people assume they automatically have controversial and/or out dated political views which cause them to be passed for a job for a company that may be geared to younger generations.

It is unfortunate that employers can skate around what's legal and still say they are equal opportunity. They can just let people go because of employment at will and in an interview can just reject you because your too old oh I mean not the right fit--then a 22 year old right out of school less qualified gets hired. It happens all the time

I started experiencing age discrimination when I turned 56. Age discrimination is all based in unconscious projection. The hiring managers are deep down afraid of aging themselves. I now dye my hair, got cosmetic dentistry, I dumb my resume way down so it shows only half of my experience...and now I am beating them at their own game. I have more work than I know what to do with.

I like working with the older demographic. What I do not like is picking up anyone’s slack however. Age has been used to tell me (a younger person) to consistently give an extra hand to older workers.

Age discrimination in employment is rampant. Sure there are laws against it. But employers know that these laws are practically toothless, and they can easily get around them. Give me an older worker any day of the year. I just can't understand why so many companies practice this sort of discrimination. And why does this report only focus on women victims? MEN get shafted too!

Heres the thing. Older workers are extremely inefficient and resistant to technology. I found out very quickly that working hard to them is because it takes them longer to get things done. Technology really changed everything for people born in 1980s
@Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living8 ай бұрын
That may be true for Boomers, but it’s definitely NOT true for Gen X. Gen X, especially those who were born in the 70s, invented a lot of the technology, and they are the quickest to adapt to any technology because not only did they invent it, but they were the first generation to utilize it when they were in grade school. It’s Gen X that’s taking the most advantage of AI to make their jobs more efficient and possibly making other jobs dated and irrelevant.

@@ANPennsylvania this is what happens. In every generation, some people work in technical fields and some don’t. There are lots of gen Z that sure they can do a TikTok video or can do a pretty presentation using adobe AI tools, but are completely unable to work with complex formulas and algorithms , design a workflow to solve a problem , unable to code, and unable to understand systems. And there are lots of gen X who are gurus in code, programming, and technology because they have been exposed to it for decades and have seen it evolve. It all depends on how you look and find workers for your business.

If you cannot comprehend why after 30 yrs of doing the same thing over and over you aren't viable then THAT'S why you got fired. Your age has nothing to do with it. And supervisors can only repeat themselves so many times. If you can't keep up with technology maybe it's time for you to exit the workforce and strike out on your own.

It’s these same generalizations that are causing the ageism problem. I can and do run circles around the younger folks. But the opportunity to hire they selected a 28 yr old that is VERY good at flirting. A male a bit older than me was passed over for a promotion to a young person. But of course these two young folks make less. I do think that when an older woman is in charge that they are more apt to hire someone older.
