I used my IPad mini 4 ten years by getting it repaired once. That cost me $250 but I have several medical expenses and it made more sense for me. I usually use my phones 6 or 7 years. I use the phone for calls and email so as long as the battery can be charged, it’s ok. If the device is too old, some apps stop working on it, but I use the IPad for most of my apps. When I do upgrade my phone I upgrade to the least expensive version through my phone carrier, so it’s usually not more than $200, for me. I use my laptop for my TV and those usually last me 6 years. Electronics have gotten so expensive, that I have to think about how much the larger items like washers/dryers and refrigerators will last. It just doesn’t make sense to upgrade the small devices so often.

Eventually you will not be allowed to use your apps without updating the iOS. And at some point, Apple will no longer support it, and you won’t even be allowed to update it anymore, meaning your apps will no longer work. It’s happened to a series of phones I’ve had. I mean, if it’s paid off, why get a new one? Well, last iPhone I got, it was a fiasco. You see, my Apple Watch was so old, that by updating my phone, it would no longer see or pair with it. I had to get a new Apple Watch because of the upgrade. Oh, and if you’re thinking, well, you shouldn’t’ve done that… …if I updated the iOS on my phone because, yes, at some point, my apps would stop working without an update, then the same thing would happen. Planned obsolescence. Meanwhile, my 2004 iPod mini, and 2005 iPod nano STILL work because it never needs anything to be updated for it.

Android phones can be updated to the latest version if you install cfw(custom firmware) which are basically unofficial OS made by the community Android had less restrictions on apps too so they're able to make an app that can prevent overcharging which shortens battery life. Ideally you should stay between 20-80% as much as possible, I aim for 20-50% to reduce battery wear I used to buy Samsung but they stopped making batteries after a year and my Note 4 developed a fault after only a year. I probably can use the phon for another year or two, so why not use it? I back it up every night to the cloud. If that backup starts failing, I’ll start looking around for a newer phone. I only paid $150 for it, and about $300 for the one before that. Even $300 for the 6 years of service I got from my previous phone was very good. If everyone did this, it would cut down on waste.
