What a comeback. Been a Cage fan for a long time and we all knew something was spiraling with Matt. When the gun charges happened it was almost a releif. Fans like myself knew he was going to get the help he needed wether he accepted it or not, the option was health or jail time. I saw them 2 times on the latest tour and he was like a new person on stage. He was in control and it showed during the entire setlist. Welcome back Matt.

I agree that a drug induced psychosis is different than an unprovoked mental illness…even if it’s the abuse of a legal prescription. I think people need to take responsibility for using so heavily as to cause a psychotic episode. However, sometimes the episode is a result of taking the medicine as prescribed. The gist of the original comment is very true. Many people with mental illness suffer from shame and self-blame. Our society should do better about treating and counseling mental illness.

It lurks in the background, sometimes days, weeks, months, or even years like Matt here. Delusions can be difficult to detect, because your perception of the world may not change very much, other than paranoia creeping into the background. Rather than question your sanity, you start to question others' sanity, especially when confronted about the issue. It's like a spell that must be broken out of. I'm glad Matt snapped out of it, even though it took a police encounter before he did. Being actively psychotic and in possession of a weapon greatly multiplies the risk for self-harm or harming others.

It’s been 2 years since we last spoke. I always ask God why me. I hope someday my story ends like Matt’s.. it gives me hope. I started recording a heavy metal album as it’s the only thing I got left. I had a psychotic episode in 2017 that lasted 2 days and then kinda lingered for 6 months. Hospitalized after the Zoloft I was taking messed with my body chemistry. Matt’s explanation of it is spot on…. ‘hi jacked”…exactly how it feels
@momo337272 ай бұрын
I just started taking Zoloft, should I be concerned? :(
@sonotdown9982 ай бұрын
@@momo33727No. Just remember that if you have a bad reaction people are there to help. Don’t be ashamed and so scared that you don’t seek help if you feel yourself “losing it.” You can often tell when something is wrong in your thinking. Don’t be too scared or proud or embarrassed to get help immediately. If you have family or friends listen to them if they notice a severe change in your behavior. I’ve been on the Zoloft for a while now. I had constant anxiety which led to extreme frustration and then constant anger. That alone was bad enough-but I also have severe depression. Not good. I smoke cigarettes and was having constant difficulty breathing or getting enough breath in-like my lung capacity had decreased or something. I convinced myself that I had lung cancer. That fueled my anxiety, frustration, and rage (at myself). I was ashamed that I had “given myself” a fatal disease. This lasted years. I eventually got my head together and spoke with my psychiatrist. He had me supplement my existing meds with Zoloft. It was like night and day. The chest pain and breathing difficulty disappeared. I tell people that Zoloft “cured my cancer.” I know nothing about this Cage the Elephant dude. I’m glad he’s better. However, it feels a lot like they’re skirting around the issue. That issue? Abuse of pharmaceutical amphetamines. He was prescribed an “ADHD medication.” He may have been “prescribed it” but it’s really tempting to not “take it as prescribed”-especially as a touring musician (ask me how I know) or a “long-haul trucker” like his dad. Zoloft isn’t an ADHD medication. Adderall and other ADHD meds are a huge help if you need them. Like if you can’t function as baseline normal human being. If you abuse it, not so much. I mean, it says, “Dextro-METHAMPHETAMINE” right there on the label. Not saying it’s the same thing as the Crystal variety; but it can freak you out near enough if you’re constantly popping them. Abuse of that kind is harmful to yourself and-maybe more importantly-others with mental health issues because: A) It stigmatizes ALL psych meds. Proof? Here you are worried that Zoloft (a completely unrelated medication) is gonna cause a psychotic break. B) It makes it really difficult for those who need Adderall to get their meds. Just search up “Adderall shortage.” It’s a big problem for those whose mental health depends on their getting their medication.

I know how this darkness goes, it is music like theirs that gets me through the hardest times. I knew he could get through it though. He has a huge fanbase that loves him and I know he has family and friends too. After years of being under control of my bipolar II diagnosis, earlier this year I decided to get back on medication (and returned to therapy) because I had felt the control starting to slip. I had been on 3 meds for five months and I had not improved at all. I also had no negative side effects like I usually do. My psych provider decided to go up one dosage on all 3. So from minimal to the next step up. But that's still doubling. I had a full on episodic break that lasted one day in a delusional state and then three more days in a near catatonic state. All this is to say: The drugs can be your best friend, they can be your worst enemy, they can be something in between, and they can be something else outside of all of that entirely if your brain is creative and chaotic enough to go there.

I love him bringing awareness to this, I’ve had psychosis after a traumatic experience which ended in ptsd being in a hospital for over a month and then psychosis because I couldn’t sleep and was so traumatized. It was no joke. I was in treatment for ptsd since 2021 till about two months ago. “A state of panic 24/7” is exactly how it is and so much fear. Incredible band though, I used to listen when I was so young , they make beautiful songs my favorite is rubber ball ❤

Omg! Only certain people know how horrific it is when you have sudden emotional trauma, physical trauma & no sleep. ITS SO SCARY! Mine happened because I decided to take a break from my husband because of him cheating on me & YEARS of mistreatment. I left & moved back in with my patents (I haven't been back in my childhood home in 20 years & it had a whole set of disturbing memories for me that got brought back up immediately that I blocked out) THEN after only 2 days of being there.. I broke my ankle BADLY & had to have surgery. AFTER THAT...I could not sleep. I went a week without sleep & I was in constant pain. I cried 24/7. I hallucinated & had a nervous breakdown... in total silence. I kept it all totally silent. None of my family knew the suffering I was going through & I didn't want them too. After a couple weeks.. I healed & picked up the pieces & left. I will never forget the total nightmare I went through. I pray it NEVER happens again:(

@@x-Clover-x that’s remarkable you were able to come out of it alright without getting treatment. I’m glad you’re okay kind stranger, and it’s true I know no one who has experienced this besides other people I’ve met in treatment. It’s a miracle you’re ok without getting help, but remember reaching out is not a sign of weakness or a bad thing! It is brave and in the future for any reason if you need mental help, don’t be afraid to seek it.💛🌻

I’m so glad they’re still making music. I used to listen to their older albums alllll the time. Come a little closer is one of my favorite songs ever

The often negative long-term mental health effects of amphetamines, even for those with ADHD, is often overlooked and not disclosed to people when these drugs are prescribed. This type of mental health breakdown spurred by these type of medications happens way more often than is reported, and this brave story is very important in terms of raising awareness for the very real risks of these medications.
