As a schizophrenic person, its so refreshing to see the topic of psychosis covered with so much respect. No sensationalism, no stigma, no shame, just letting Matt tell his story. I am also happily suprised by this comment section being full of postivity and people relating ❤️ hopefully this inspires more news networks to follow this example

What a comeback. Been a Cage fan for a long time and we all knew something was spiraling with Matt. When the gun charges happened it was almost a releif. Fans like myself knew he was going to get the help he needed wether he accepted it or not, the option was health or jail time. I saw them 2 times on the latest tour and he was like a new person on stage. He was in control and it showed during the entire setlist. Welcome back Matt.

I saw it immediately within Thank You, Happy Birthday. Songs like Indy Kidz and Sell Yourself really have that "psycho sktizo" energy. When Melophopia dropped it had songs like Spiderhead, and Come a Little Closer and that really hammered in the fact that it may have not just been for showmanship

as someone who has gone through psychosis many times, woke up the next day and had everything layed out to me like im a villain, all while not even being able to remember the thing that I didn't think I would ever do (but still did) and get what feels as verbal interrogation instead of an actual explanation. It's not that more people need "Awareness", it's that more people who don't have to understand this should sympathize and not prosicute.

I agree that a drug induced psychosis is different than an unprovoked mental illness…even if it’s the abuse of a legal prescription. I think people need to take responsibility for using so heavily as to cause a psychotic episode. However, sometimes the episode is a result of taking the medicine as prescribed. The gist of the original comment is very true. Many people with mental illness suffer from shame and self-blame. Our society should do better about treating and counseling mental illness.

I've been in recovery for 7 years and my experience with psychosis was terrifying and long. Medication and diagnoses don't always help or reflect what's really going on. But every single time a well-known individual or group comes out with their story, it makes a big difference. I came across this video because someone sent it in an alumni group chat. I just wanted you to know how much it helps others to share your story and experiences. Thank you 🙏

It lurks in the background, sometimes days, weeks, months, or even years like Matt here. Delusions can be difficult to detect, because your perception of the world may not change very much, other than paranoia creeping into the background. Rather than question your sanity, you start to question others' sanity, especially when confronted about the issue. It's like a spell that must be broken out of. I'm glad Matt snapped out of it, even though it took a police encounter before he did. Being actively psychotic and in possession of a weapon greatly multiplies the risk for self-harm or harming others.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder with psychotic features in 2022 at the age of 27. My girlfriend at the time just disappeared from my life. I’ll never know why. It was devastating because I really thought she was the one. The worst part is she is also bipolar and I thought she would have been more understanding… I miss her every day. It’s been 2 years since we last spoke. I always ask God why me. I hope someday my story ends like Matt’s.. it gives me hope. I started recording a heavy metal album as it’s the only thing I got left. No friends no family… just my own mind… my hope is to maybe find friends through music… I’m pretty alone but at least there’s therapy…

I had a psychotic episode in 2017 that lasted 2 days and then kinda lingered for 6 months. Hospitalized after the Zoloft I was taking messed with my body chemistry. Matt’s explanation of it is spot on…. ‘hi jacked”…exactly how it feels

@sonotdown998

@@momo33727No. Just remember that if you have a bad reaction people are there to help. Don’t be ashamed and so scared that you don’t seek help if you feel yourself “losing it.” You can often tell when something is wrong in your thinking. Don’t be too scared or proud or embarrassed to get help immediately. If you have family or friends listen to them if they notice a severe change in your behavior. I’ve been on the Zoloft for a while now. I had constant anxiety which led to extreme frustration and then constant anger. That alone was bad enough-but I also have severe depression. Not good. I smoke cigarettes and was having constant difficulty breathing or getting enough breath in-like my lung capacity had decreased or something. I convinced myself that I had lung cancer. That fueled my anxiety, frustration, and rage (at myself). I was ashamed that I had “given myself” a fatal disease. This lasted years. I eventually got my head together and spoke with my psychiatrist. He had me supplement my existing meds with Zoloft. It was like night and day. The chest pain and breathing difficulty disappeared. I tell people that Zoloft “cured my cancer.” I know nothing about this Cage the Elephant dude. I’m glad he’s better. However, it feels a lot like they’re skirting around the issue. That issue? Abuse of pharmaceutical amphetamines. He was prescribed an “ADHD medication.” He may have been “prescribed it” but it’s really tempting to not “take it as prescribed”-especially as a touring musician (ask me how I know) or a “long-haul trucker” like his dad. Zoloft isn’t an ADHD medication. Adderall and other ADHD meds are a huge help if you need them. Like if you can’t function as baseline normal human being. If you abuse it, not so much. I mean, it says, “Dextro-METHAMPHETAMINE” right there on the label. Not saying it’s the same thing as the Crystal variety; but it can freak you out near enough if you’re constantly popping them. Abuse of that kind is harmful to yourself and-maybe more importantly-others with mental health issues because: A) It stigmatizes ALL psych meds. Proof? Here you are worried that Zoloft (a completely unrelated medication) is gonna cause a psychotic break. B) It makes it really difficult for those who need Adderall to get their meds. Just search up “Adderall shortage.” It’s a big problem for those whose mental health depends on their getting their medication.

I've been a CTE fan for years now, I wrote a whole long post on his IG and a ton of people ended up liking my comment, I hope he saw it at least. I know how this darkness goes, it is music like theirs that gets me through the hardest times. I knew he could get through it though. He has a huge fanbase that loves him and I know he has family and friends too. There are moments where you are on the brink of the abyss, delusions can make you feel like you are experiencing some other reality. Why I say taking care of one's mental health is very important, if not one of the most important things.

After years of being under control of my bipolar II diagnosis, earlier this year I decided to get back on medication (and returned to therapy) because I had felt the control starting to slip. I had been on 3 meds for five months and I had not improved at all. I also had no negative side effects like I usually do. My psych provider decided to go up one dosage on all 3. So from minimal to the next step up. But that's still doubling. I had a full on episodic break that lasted one day in a delusional state and then three more days in a near catatonic state. All this is to say: The drugs can be your best friend, they can be your worst enemy, they can be something in between, and they can be something else outside of all of that entirely if your brain is creative and chaotic enough to go there.

& no psych “doctor” will validate this but having lived with & worked in mental health (issues) for a long time, this is not an “uncommon phenomenon”. Even mainstream medical experts have changed their opinion on how/why psych meds specifically antidepressant SSRIs “work”. They no longer subscribe to the “chemical imbalance” myth, since there’s no evidence of a balance to begin with. Now they just simply say “we don’t know how but we think it works”… but not Always

Thank you, Matt, for sharing your experience! I have never struggled with psychosis, but I do struggle with bipolar depression, and it is rough some days! Thank you for talking about it. We must take away the stigma of mental health struggles, and one of the best ways to do that is to talk about it. I have never listened to your music, but I am gonna give it a shot because of this! Thank you!

My mom experienced psychosis after being given steroids after a major surgery. It lasted for about 3 months, and she was a completely different person. She was mean and she was terrified, it was awful. So scary! I refuse to ever take steroids now, even if it's just for inflammation or a respiratory infection or anything like that. It's wild what medications can do to some people.

Im glad your mom is better now. Steroids for pleurisy pushed me to constant fear and paranoia. Led to a mental breakdown that ultimately got me on antidepressants and behavioral therapy. I'm so grateful I got help. I will never take steroids again unless it's a life or death situation 💯

My old landlord went in for a steroid injection in his back and woke up in a jail cell. He had gone on a psychotic rampage on his drive home. Ran his car into things and tried to fight all the cops.

Wow I’m glad she’s feeling better now. I had to take steroids along with a bunch of other really strong medications after a breast augmentation and I swear I went in one person and I came out another. I felt so agitated and just out of control in my body. Now that you’re saying this I think I struggled for about a year after that. Hmmm now you’ve got me thinking about a lot of things…very curious.

I love him bringing awareness to this, I’ve had psychosis after a traumatic experience which ended in ptsd being in a hospital for over a month and then psychosis because I couldn’t sleep and was so traumatized. It was no joke. I was in treatment for ptsd since 2021 till about two months ago. “A state of panic 24/7” is exactly how it is and so much fear. Incredible band though, I used to listen when I was so young , they make beautiful songs my favorite is rubber ball ❤

Omg! Only certain people know how horrific it is when you have sudden emotional trauma, physical trauma & no sleep. ITS SO SCARY! Mine happened because I decided to take a break from my husband because of him cheating on me & YEARS of mistreatment. I left & moved back in with my patents (I haven't been back in my childhood home in 20 years & it had a whole set of disturbing memories for me that got brought back up immediately that I blocked out) THEN after only 2 days of being there.. I broke my ankle BADLY & had to have surgery. AFTER THAT...I could not sleep. I went a week without sleep & I was in constant pain. I cried 24/7. I hallucinated & had a nervous breakdown... in total silence. I kept it all totally silent. None of my family knew the suffering I was going through & I didn't want them too. After a couple weeks.. I healed & picked up the pieces & left. I will never forget the total nightmare I went through. I pray it NEVER happens again:(

@@x-Clover-x that’s remarkable you were able to come out of it alright without getting treatment. I’m glad you’re okay kind stranger, and it’s true I know no one who has experienced this besides other people I’ve met in treatment. It’s a miracle you’re ok without getting help, but remember reaching out is not a sign of weakness or a bad thing! It is brave and in the future for any reason if you need mental help, don’t be afraid to seek it.💛🌻

The often negative long-term mental health effects of amphetamines, even for those with ADHD, is often overlooked and not disclosed to people when these drugs are prescribed. This type of mental health breakdown spurred by these type of medications happens way more often than is reported, and this brave story is very important in terms of raising awareness for the very real risks of these medications.
