@simonkapadia75823 ай бұрын
No actually he was very much saying Israel doesn't have a right to exist, but rather that it exists as a factual matter. His entire point, and this is true from a legal and political theoretical sense, is that "being a state" is a purely power-political reality. If you understand the legal determinants of statehood, the lack of adjudication, the practical distinctions between states and non-states, you recognise that being a state is largely a function or power, control and recognition by other powerful actors. Indeed, in some respects Palestine and Israel meet the same basic criteria for statehood, Israel does not have a fixed set of geographical boundaries, nor has it ever had, it has disputed territories, some of which are explicitly considered to be occupied territories, or illegally annexed territories in other cases. The actual point is that the narrative around 'right to exist' is purely a political narrative, it's a formulation intended to evoke the concept of existential threat, which does not exist, but is constantly stressed in propaganda. For instance, the argument that Hamas would destroy Israel. How? It lacks, and has always lacked the capacity to achieve even the tiniest fraction of that aspiration. By contrast Israel has destroyed Gaza, it has taken almost all of Palestine, it has engaged in illegal settlements, and in collective punishment, in apartheid, in illegal detentions, torture and abuse of detainees, extrajudicial killings, the list goes on. The rhetoric of right to exist is itself part of the problem in the US. It's intended to evoke a threat that can be used to justify . . what has become a consistent flurry of violations of international humanitarian law, as well as jus ad bellum.

Disappointed that only one of the three co-anchors, Tony Dokoupil, was given license and free reign to "highjack" the entire interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates to discuss a "portion" of the book that he interpreted as a "personal affront" to his belief system. @Gayle and @Nate, where was the "balance and objectivity" expected among great journalists? It was reported that Israeli civilians for amusement attend daily trips to the torture Dungeons to WATCH as civilian Palestenians kidnapped from Gaza by IOF are being tortured. Also reported that Israeli politicians argue to legalize the RAPE of Palestenian hostages incl. children (which has been documented prior to October ‘23) as well as the vast majority of Israeli society supporting that decision. You can't impose the framework of American race relations onto the complex geopolitics of the Middle East. Israelis are, in fact, 75% people of Middle Eastern or North African descent. This conflict is rooted in Palestinian aggression towards Israel and a longstanding culture of antisemitism in the region. Unlike apartheid in South Africa, where racial segregation was systematically enforced by law, Israel is a multi-ethnic democracy where Arab citizens have voting rights, serve in the Knesset (parliament), and participate in many aspects of public life. Moreover, Palestinians are not Israeli citizens; their status was clearly defined during the Oslo Accords, which established the framework for Palestinian self-governance in certain territories.

A group, he would doubtless argue represents a security threat, which of course is his interior justification of his position because he selectively empathises with one group, and thus can justify crimes against another group he regards as existing in conflict and opposition to the first group. In other words, as a logical consequence of the occupation the Israelis are justified in all their violations of international humanitarian law, because how else would they protect themselves from the people whose land and rights they have indefinitely withdrawn / appropriated? In American terms, those exact arguments were used against abolition before the civil war. There was fear that a massive wave of violence would be unleashed if slaves were ever freed. "A war of retribution.". Likewise, the South African government during apartheid was pretty worried that the moment it let its iron grip slide the white minority would be expelled, have their property taken, or worse by the majority. It's straight up dehumanisation to suggest that a population can be exposed to collective punishment, illegal detention, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing because some of them might be terrorists. Anyone with a shred of knowledge of these dynamics can spot that a mile away, but I'd dare say this case is so flagrant that very few people will have failed to see it irrespective as to their background. And in legal and ethical terms none of that flies. It's all illegal under international law, and even within domestic law the rule is reasonably plain that each person, each party if you like is responsible for their crimes irrespective as to provocations. You cannot claim that your crime was "caused" by someone else's crimes as a provocation, and thus that you have done nothing wrong. And that works both ways. And it is absolutely illegal to punish an entire population for the crimes of individuals or groups.

Watching this interview made me so mad. I was looking to see the discussion of Coates book and it got hijacked over one section due to Tony Dokoupil and his political leanings. He has a right to his beliefs, but it was a set up from the beginning with the two Black hosts, King and Burleson set off to the side like lawn jockeys for a display: Well, we had two Black people up there too! That was more for optics than anything. It’s inexcusable! It was a such a supremacist display of power over a book that was dealing with Coates travels and experience of the world that CBS itself should be ashamed. Dokoupil basically accused Coates of producing work that if stripped down of his credentials would place him as a terrorist. Such a calculated but poor choice of words for a journalist. As much as has happened to Black folks in this country there would be no justification for us wanting the genocide of White people. That would taint our own. You don’t want that on your conscience or riding your children’s conscience. Karma is a ... And at the end Dokoupil had the nerve to tell him you’re still invited to the high holidays i.e. you’re still a good boy as if he were a dog. This was too much playing in Black folks’ face!

The theatrics and line of questions wreaked of the oppressor's playbook that so many of us are familiar with. Thanks for recognizing and articulating this for those who may have missed this ridiculous presentation. I did enjoy Burleson nodding like "solid point" when Coates talked about countries being established by force vs rights, just like the US was.

I am so proud of how well Ta-Nehisi Coates handled himself against that line of questioning! He stood ten toes down on being against apartheid and how Israel has a tiered society. Honestly, I get quite flustered and overwhelmed when someone questions me that hard because they’re trying to say I believe the worst. (ie. being antisemitic.) I hope to embrace his steadfast confidence in his beliefs, and I will be reading his book.

@dannyqiblawi51643 ай бұрын
It is time to respond to people like Tony with the same hostility they present their “line of questioning”. Tony says “yes but what did the Palestinians do to deserve apartheid?” Imagine someone asked “what did Jews do to deserve genocide?” “What did black people do to deserve Jim Crow?” That person would justifiably have their career ended. This is exactly what Tony just said about Palestinians. The crimes of genocide, of apartheid, of the new war crime that will be recognized as Israel reduces the entire city of Gaza to rubble, are completely indefensible and inexcusable. Nothing justifies or explains them.
@edwinthompson3885Ай бұрын
There is nothing extremist in the book, just observations about a non-democratic state that has implemented an apartheid system. Tony could have discussed the IDF members of Breaking the Silence, the inability of Palestinians to use the court system, the seizure of private property by the state of Isreal, the terror imposed on families, etc. - all good interview topics. He didn't because he didn't read the book. I can say, The Message is a good read.

Israel is the only state in the Middle East that is multicultural, all of the surrounding countries are ethnostates. The 20% of Israel who are Arab Israelis have full citizenship and equal rights. Palestinians have checkpoints because of the suicide bombings of the second intifada. That’s what the journalist means when he says what was the Palestinian role in creating those conditions.

@@chasejones8302 Of course he answered the question, plus he details in his book how different laws exist for Jewish Israeli citizens vs Muslim citizens. It’s important because so much of our tax dollars go to Israel not the surrounding countries. Furthermore, if you purport to be the only democracy in the region, then why are you continuously violating the human rights of Palestinians? That’s according to the ICC, the Geneva Convention, the Oslo Accords & even former IDF soldiers.
