I have been trying to find out how they did this my entire life!!! I had no idea they dug under the river floor I always though they submerged the tunnel in the water and the tunnel actally sat at the bottom of the river. I have been enlightened!!!!

Outer metal casings, built in, Catasauqua, Pennsylvania beginning in 1905, the company began making iron plates for lining under water tunnels using the shield method; its first such project was with the Pennsylvania Railroad for the railroad tunnels in NYC. Other projects were Holland (1923), Lincoln (1937), Queens-Midtown (1936-1940) and Battery-to-Brooklyn (1945) car tunnels and the MacAdoo and Harlem RR tunnels.

@@8avexp Oh wow, so it waa 50 cents each way then right? In google maps like the garden state parkway. It’s fun to see the a changes from several toll boths condensed to just one side, now they’re all unfortunately gone. No more cash. Which is annoying when borrowing someone’s car.
@8avexp3 жыл бұрын
@@42luke93 Yep, 50 cents each way. When they first started collecting tolls eastbound-only, the existing toll booths were left in place at first, with a yellow light flashing above each booth and a big sign that said, "NO TOLL collected this direction. DO NOT STOP!"
