My friend and I went there today and it's just a huge pond full of wildlife where center field was supposed to be. The spaces that were meant to be the dugouts and kitchens are now filled with algae-covered rainwater that has been sitting there, mostly undisturbed, for decades. It was amazing.

I'm not a Sacramento native--I've only lived here for just under four years as of the the time of this post--but I've seen the image of what appeared to be a small pond with the outline of a sports arena just to the north of Sleep Train Arena on Google Maps and wondered "what the hell was that supposed to have been?" And now I have my answer. And now I can die happy.

This was an excellent piece. I'm back home in Southern California now, but in the mid-1980s I was a student at Sac State. I remember all that going on. In a way, is rather sad looking at it today in 2017: the Raiders are on the move again to Las Vegas, and the Athletics want out of the Oakland Coliseum. The commentator is correct, if that state you had been built, Sacramento would have had a very different and higher profile major-league sports history. I was living in the Sacramento area when the NBA Kings came from Kansas City, and definitely remember watching that first game from what was then Arco Arena (The temporary one) on Channel 13. Taking absolutely nothing away from Sacramento,, but I think it would have been difficult to sustain three major-league sports teams in that area. San Francisco was on the verge of losing the major league baseball Giants back in the 1990s, while at the same time Los Angeles did lose both NFL teams. Recently, of course, San Diego lost the Chargers back to Los Angeles. From what I read and heard here in Southern California, even the Sacramento Kings were at one point being discussed as a possible team to move. I certainly hope that does not happen. As much as in my heart I would love to see Sacramento have the major-league baseball and football teams as well, I just don't think it will ever be possible. If the Athletics don't stay in Oakland, I at least hope they will stay in Northern California, like in San Jose at Levi's Stadium. As for the fans bussed in from Sacramento to the Oakland Athletics game in 1987, that definitely showed there was an interest among some people. However, it would have been a 53,000+ seat stadium in Sacramento that needed to be filled for 84 home games a season, Plus preseason and possible postseason. Unless it was a domed stadium, or at least a retractable roof I don't think it would have been viable. The clip said that about 20,000 fans made the journey that day from Sacramento to Oakland. If that was the fan base, about 20,000, that would not have been enough to sustain the team. Sure, the stadium club we will have sold out quite a few games in the first few seasons. But, if the A's did not start producing championship teams, that stadium will try and get self with about 20,000 people in the stands on a good day, and that certainly would not have been you have. Watching that clip brought back a lot of memories of the mid 1980s and the optimism of major-league sports fans in Sacramento. I really think with The Sacramento Kings for basketball and the Sacramento RiverCats for baseball, you now have a very viable and sustainable professional sports culture.

I don't think Sacramento is a feasible market for an NFL and MLB team. Even when the Sacramento Kings were winning in the Maloof era (1999-2005), it wasn't an adequate sports market. A's had leverage when Sacramento River Cats was their farm team at the time to convert Raley's field to a park that meets MLB standards if those choose to relocate but Sacramento never was a sports market to make a profit

I was at UC Davis and a sports intern at KCRA Sacramento 1987-88 and remember this time well. In many ways it's a good thing the baseball stadium was never finished as it would have been outdated as it would have resembled the White Sox stadium, the last of the non retro stadiums that was built. Grant was right, Al Davis was the master negotiator and never gave Sacramento serious thought. Sacramento will never get an NFL or MLB team because there isn't enough corporate money in the city which is needed to sustain a professional sports team. That wasn't the case in the 1980's but now with premium seats and luxury suites, Sacramento is fortunate that they were able to hold onto the Kings.
@scarpfish7 жыл бұрын
It's just as well they stopped. Multi-purpose stadiums have fallen out of favor, and even had a stadium been built for either a MLB or NFL team, they'd be threatening to move by now if a bigger more luxurious one wasn't be given to them by now.

Sleep Train Arena!?!?! Am I the only one who is sick and tired of the ridiculous, and even outrageous "naming rights" going on in sports today? I'll admit, starting here in my own home town, Phoenix, it has reached the ridiculous level. The original new arena for the Phoenix Suns was re-branded as "America West Arena" shortly after opening. But when AW merged with American, all bets were off, so they sold the name to a local Indian casino and resort, and it became "Talking Stick Arena". The resort and casino aren't even located in Phoenix, they're in neighboring Scottsdale. I can remember the first time I heard an ad for a concert at "Talking Stick Arena"...I thought the resort had their own showplace, and when I went to buy tickets, it turned out, it was for the Sun's arena. And then, of course, there is the saga of the building of the state of the art stadium for the Arizona Cardinals. They couldn't stand to continue to play at the Arizona State University Sun Devil Stadium, for various, (mostly specious) reasons. So a bond was floated to build this new stadium. But was it called "Arizona Cardinals' Stadium"? NO. The highest bidder for the naming rights was a local, online college called "University of Phoenix". They have a few brick and mortar buildings around town, but no real "campus". They have NO sports program. BUT...the Cardinals couldn't share a beautiful stadium with our actual Arizona State University, but they sold the rights to name the stadium to a NOT so real university...for $$$. Its all about the $$$. And sorry for this long remark, but Its time to say something.. Unfortunately, one of the worst perpetrators of this had been one of my favorite sports, NASCAR. Instead of having the races named for the tracks they are at, such as "The Darlington 500", or at the VERY least, televising it as "The Darlington 500, brought to you by....." NO.. They are re-naming the races after the sponsors..."Ford EcoBoost 400 (Homestead), First Data 500 (Martinsville), Hollywood Casino 400 (Kansas), Apache Warrior 400 (Dover); there have been many others, but the ones that really pushed me over the edge" were the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' 400" (2017 Chicago), the "Go Bowling 400" (2017 Kansas), and the creme del la Creme, the "Helluva Good Dip 500"....I can't remember which track, but it was recent. REALLY?!?!? The Helluva Good Dip 500?!? IT's insanity. It's all about money.....and if these folks don't see this soon, the money is going to dry up...because people are getting tired of this nonsense.

So basically, their plan was to take Oakland’s sports teams. Good thing it didn’t happen though, as this whole concept was already heading out of style. The model where a stadium/arena was located in the middle of nowhere surrounded by a sea of parking lots would soon be outdated. Within 10 years, professional sports teams wanted centralized venues located in dense (often Downtown) sections of cities, with restaurants, bars, and other ancillary development within steps of the venue. If you need proof that this wouldn’t have worked look at the current state of Arco Arena now. It’s barely past its 30th Birthday and the Kings have already moved out, into a new arena that has exactly the setup I mentioned in the sentence before last. Arco Park would’ve suffered the same fate. They tried to build an ‘Oakland Coliseum North’, but two decades too late.

Sacramento crashed and burned so many times because too many small minded mayor's/city council employees that always had these grandiose visions of being compared to San Francisco,Paris,or even Oklahoma City,while making it impossible with too many restrictions on height,length,color..... then add in the same old group of litigious local residents bitching about traffic,and developers got the hell out of here as fast as possible...... look how long it took to get a new NBA arena!
@johnhaladay55416 жыл бұрын
So, a group of developers paid to build a stadium before any professional teams had committed - in writing - to move there? How stupid was that? Nobody wanted the dreadful Kansas City Kings, and they were desperate for a new home, which is how Sacramento acquired them. However, football and baseball, especially back in the late 1980s, was different. The owners weren't going to move into such a small, barely regional market, now matter what stadium was build to entice them.

Welcome to bumpkinville. But things will be all better when major league soccer comes. Sacramento is a 4th rate city. Run by corrupt people at all levels.

You wish. L.A. is major league while Sacramento will forever be minor league. Having the Kings doesn't change that fact.

@@sjdrifter72 lol calm down LA just got rams back and they are all of a sudden a big major league. It's about time they came out the shadows. Sacramento is over shadowed by the Bay Area everybody knows that
