I used to live in an apartment building across the street from the site back in the 70's as a student. I felt they should do something useful with land. Cal has a sizable campus; there are plenty of open space to exercise free speech.

they act like the bart train with its easy to step over turnstiles doesnt exist. When my friend went to UCB she rode on the bus from Vallejo. The Vallejo Bus gets to the city in 45 minutes nevermind Berkeley. Apartments for $1200 right near the vallejo transit terminal. I live in the city but my commute on muni to downtown is longer than 40 minutes as is the case for most americans. My sister told me at northeastern finals continued even in blizzard conditions... imagine an average Boston college student in a literal blizzard on their way to class on winter finals week with nasty boston buses and trains cancelled and this this girl is probs in the sunshine or at worst light rain on a lovely walk.
