I'm pleasantly surprised with BART's service lately. The last few trains that I have ridden have been clean and on time with no riders vaping or playing loud music. Credit where credit is due, hope that this marks a turning point for them.

I'm curious why BART is in that kind of shape when the system in Seattle isn't. Even though around here there's been a lot of the same BS going on where they won't arrest people for shoplifting and a bunch of the police have retired or quit due to the lack of support and funding.

I was on the Pittsburg to Walnut Creek BART on 10/09. Some guy was going through some personal stuff and yelling on his phone. Even bashing his phone against the wall. Some did call the BART Police and when the BART officer was asking around, a lady said the guy was loud. The officer said that it wasn't against the law to be loud, BUT he would check with the guy. The officer calmly talked to the guy and got him off the train. Honestly, I was surprised... BART Police did a good job. It would be easy to drag the guy off the train, but the officer was like, "You doing alright? Let's talk out here and see what we can take care of!". Professional and handled greatly with attention towards the person's struggle.

I gave up on BART about 2 years ago after being a regular rider from 2006 until late 2022. By 2022, I would count the number of drug abusers on the train and compare it to normal working people the ratio would often be 1:1 in the hours I would outside of the commute traffic. My wife had so many bad experiences on BART that she would now rather spend $90 on an Uber ride than $20 on a BART trip. I kept using BART for a while since barf on a train didn't bother me so much. But a guy on some stimulant with a knife acting paranoid while other riders were getting off was kind of when I had enough of BART myself. These are similar to the gates we have in the Netherlands. Petty people will just tackle or kick the doors down.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 2 ай бұрын
TBH, I'm not really sure what the point of that is. When I visited Italy 25 years ago the area I was in didn't bother with anything like this. They would just pull over buses at random and everybody on it had better have their ticket with them or get ticketed. It's a similar system to what we use here for our BART equivalent and as long as you have a way of tracking the people evading and ticketing them, there's no real problem. The problem comes when you're not checking fares often enough or tracking the people being caught to deter them from evading fares. At the end of the day, turnstiles and gates slow people's access to the system and aren't necessarily going to catch people that are determined whereas checking everybody on certain trains does catch enough people to keep it at bay,, assuming you're doing it enough, with sufficient consequences and tracking.

I do think BART has cleaned up some compared to the lows leading up to and during the pandemic. But it still has a ways to go and is nowhere as clean and orderly as European transit systems. Generally, I think it's fine to ride it at the times when a lot of people are taking it. I would advise folks to reconsider riding it during the off times and drive instead though: when there aren't a lot of "normal" people, one can easily get into unpleasant situations there.

common sense to ride the trains and be at platforms
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 2 ай бұрын
I'm surprised they weren't doing that. Here in Seattle we have both transit cops and fare enforcement that are regularly on the light rail and in the stations. I usually see at least one or two when I'm waiting for my train and I'm usually not waiting for my train for more than a few minutes. An open system where people can get directly on the trains is great for efficiency, but that has to be paired with regular ticket checks of enough trains that people know that they're running a significant risk of being caught and subjected to a significant penalty.

It’s likely only a matter of time before defeat techniques are discovered to get around these gates. For example, there are serious public safety implications for strong barriers. In New York, the MTA decided to put in full height faregates and the problem shifted to emergency exits. If they did what Japan does, have faregates that only close when a valid ticket or card is not inserted or tapped before passing through, then it would be more of a deterrent because one can't just run through to cheat the system. But instead they make it more inconvenient for paying riders, and non-paying riders who would have taken BART but instead now add one more car to the Bay Bridge.

Just saw a little girl get her arm caught in it and all the agent did was say ‘be careful ‘ to the mother. I think they're dangerous. Coincidentally it's hard to find a Bart agent at their stations these days. Bad form for a transportation system that is that expensive.

What are you talking about? Have you no been on BART lately? There's always a station attendant at the gates. The janitors are always on the premises. If the station has a bathroom then there is a bathroom attendant as well. And now they have both armed cops and unarmed security guards/ambassadors patrolling the stations. BART used to only have the station attendants in their booths and the janitors before last year, but now there's a ton of uniformed BART staff demonstratively milling around the stations.

Imagine going back to the Middle Ages because the police can't handle a bunch of loser fare evaders, and then touting that as a major breakthrough. That reminds me of the Brussels barriers policy so that "new Europeans" won't attack their native populace driving cars in the name of a certain deity.
