using the NFC playoff picture as an example, I can understand that the division champion automatically qualifies for the playoffs, but I don’t understand why they still have home-field advantage against a wildcard team with a better record. Isn’t that too unfair? if the Green Bay Packers make it to the playoffs today, they would have to play at the home of a team in Los Angeles with a worse record than theirs. Same as the Vikings. Can someone explain it.

Winners of Division are Champions for season. The Division Champs host to represent Division in Playoffs. Wilcard team qualifies for playoffs but weren't good enough to win their division so play on road,

@@lordtryforce As I said, I agree that division champions should make the playoffs regardless of their record. However, it's clear that divisions outside of the NFC north are terrible. Does that mean GB and MIN are just unlucky? It's really unfair.

The reason for this is because of how the NFL schedule is constructed. Each division plays an entire other division in both conferences. For example, this year the NFC South played the NFC East & the AFC West. The reason the division champion deserves a home game is because the winner of that division could’ve ended up having a difficult schedule if both the divisions they’re scheduled to play r very strong, whereas another division could have the opposite & benefit from two easy divisions being on their schedule

There’s absolutely nothing unfair about any of it. It’s a fair system which protects many facets of a year after year, decades long league. If you think your division is superior, and maybe I’m saying indeed it is, and you want your division to continue to have a league to play in, maybe you should try to be less self centered.
