I don’t know if it’s a crutch.. it’s anecdotal evidence that’s more pronounced because of the astronomical number of INTs and astronomical levels that Manning reached in his career.. but what it boils down to is that rookie QBs can struggle and still turn out to be good QBs, which is totally true.. and there are many more legs for that argument to stand on.. Manning is just the go-to example because everyone is familiar with his career..
@RaferAlston27lol

@ it’s 1000% a crutch. It’s the easy corny type of comparison that someone on First Take would make. Ya some QBs can struggle their first year and end up being good. But the Peyton manning example gets thrown around as this argument security blanket that people use. As if we’re just never supposed to have any critical discussion of a rookie QB bc Peyton manning threw a lot of interceptions

I strongly detest the idea argument that because Manning threw a lot of interceptions his rookie year and had a 3-13 record that it suddenly means Caleb will have a similar career path is a pretty bad argument. We’ve seen plenty of rookie QBs do what Manning did their rookie season and out of the league in just a few years. Caleb is not guaranteed to have a HOF career just because his rookie season is similar to Manning’s.

well generally a #1 overall pick QB doesn't go to a team that was almost 500 before, so yeah it's not like that was some wild outrageous take and the o-line played really well in the 2nd half last season so that gave people hope they would at least be average this year which obviously wasn't the case, and everyone clearly underestimated the general incompetence of that coaching staff/ownership... Caleb has a LOT to learn as any rookie does, and who is there to teach him? who is there for him to learn from in the QB room, Tyson Bagent??? the desperation people have to trash kids after one season these days is just wild

I only watched one USC game last year, the Colorado game. I specifically watched it to scout Caleb after hearing all the sports' talking heads hype of him being the consensus #1 and a sure fire NFL star in the making. I expected to see Dan Marino at Pitt or Elway or Luck at Stanford. What I saw instead was a kid with a flexible shoulder who moved well, but without elite footspeed or quick twitch muscles, a good but not great arm and a nice but not super quick release and nice but not great pocket presence. I expected he would be questionable as a quality NFL starter and he showed me nothing that would make me think he would be able to carry a team like the three guys I mentioned looked in their college days. He is performing as I expected.

Nick is usually more specific in his reviews but this one is totally off the rails. Caleb doesn't make his progressions fast enough for the NFL. Caleb either refuses or misses the easy 3-5 yd checkdowns to open guys and instead tries to play hero ball running around. Caleb lacks pocket presence and understanding where the pressure is coming from. He isn't playing as a NFL caliber player and hasn't for much of the season. Pretty simple.
