For her second mega-bestselling novel, "Little Fires Everywhere" (now a Hulu miniseries), author Celeste Ng was inspired by the Cleveland, Ohio suburb where she grew up as the daughter of Hong Kong immigrants. In February she returned to Shaker Heights with correspondent Martha Teichner, to talk about her childhood in a progressive and diverse community, her stories of class and racial divides, and how she dealt with internet trolls.

I haven’t read the book but from what I can see in this interview and television show, Ng is a very smart cookie. I’m terribly impressed by her. She is exactly what Americans need in literature and beyond right now.

Just finished watching the show and her view is completely biased. She herself should be open minded without having stereotype view of American people. BTW- why did she take an "American name"?

I have to say I get not wanting to look at the high school photos, I have a funny story about how I assumed I would be in at least five or six of them. I was a senior and thought well this is nice maybe some of the photos will look good. I also took my senior photo and thought it came out OK. Paid for them in full only to have them place me on the list of seniors not photographed. Plus in the whole yearbook only one blurry photo of me at an assembly. LOL

I feel like many other ethnicities pursue equality versus equity. I’d rather someone just respect me period versus treating me with some idea of what they feel I deserve based on what they deserve. Just the vibes I got from her acknowledging that others will never hear the Asian American story... or any other narrative that they could never truly (inherently) understand. Which is why the concept equality is so tainted. Maybe why some try to emulate popular culture. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Great book and series!

We’re avid watchers of the show. Every week. Was pretty surprising and annoying today to see a spoiler for the series we’re watching appear in this piece. Hard to believe no one working for the show thought of that. Hope some better thought will go into future pieces.

Not even Asian and I can see why people hate her. Gaslighting Asian men due to the actions of a few. Treating her own people like a monolith. What a vile woman.

Just looked at episode 6 and what came to my mind we talk about Men hurting children and young boys and girls, but there is rarely conversation about Older women seducing young girls (Kerry Washington). There seem to be an increase in black girls being lesbians. Desperation leads young people to do so much. They are confused about their identity and so much more. Darkness in the earth.
