From the archives: Eva Marie Saint on why she never went Hollywood

Eva Marie Saint, who turned 100 years old on July 4, 2024, won an Oscar for her debut opposite Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront,” and made indelible impressions in such classics as "A Hatful of Rain," "North by Northwest" and "Exodus." But even more impressive than her resume is the fact that she was able to balance career and family. Correspondent Mo Rocca talked with the remarkable Saint in this "Sunday Morning" profile originally broadcast on March 2, 2014.

When I worked with Eva Marie Saint as an actor on the TV series, "Moonlighting" she had this wonderful way of including you in the scene. When I walked onto the film set, I wasn't quite sure what was going on. Then, much to my surprise, I saw Eva smile and gesture to me, and I immidiately felt relaxed and part of the scene. Her thoughtfulness was such a nice gesture. I'll always remember her kindness. Afterwards, we exchanged letters to keep in touch. Just a wonderful experience... Hollywood could take a lesson.

A few years ago my friend's 100 y.o. mom had a birthday dinner party at Lawry's Prime Rib on La Cienega in L.A. Eva was there having dinner and when she heard about the 100th birthday she made a point of stopping to say hello which made my friend's mom's day....I think Eva was a youngster at 95. Long may she continue in good health and happy times.

Selfishly as a film buff, of course, I wish she had done many more movies, esp. after the triumphs of Waterfront and N by NW, but what an admirable woman to choose to play her career the way she did and not make it so all-important. I don't think she ever actually played the top billed lead in a film which is what so many supporting actor Oscar winners tend to do, some have the ambition to parlay that into a major star vehicle career and some fail, and some just have other priorities. Happy 100th!
