The Everly Brothers helped create rock 'n' roll, and inspired countless artists, from The Beatles to Tom Petty. Now, a new album, "Hey Doll Baby," features rare and remastered tracks, compiled by two of Don and Phil Everly's children and produced by Petty's daughter. They talk with correspondent John Blackstone about how the duo's music has been cherished by generations.

In 1986, I was part of the small crowd that witnessed Tom Petty present the Everly Brothers with their star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame. Standing right next to me was another fan, Elvis Costello, who went unannounced and unacknowledged, just another fan paying his respect to the legendary duo.

What a cool report! When I was little, of course, my parents had their album and 45s. So, I grew up listening to them. But as a teenager, I didn't make it home from the local drive-in on time one night. My parents said I could only stay long enough to see two of the three featured movies. But when I didn't get home when they expected, they decided to find me. During the third movie, my boyfriend and I, both fast asleep in the front seat of the car in bucket seats, woke to my parents beating on the car windows! After that, they broke out the old Everly Brothers record and played Wake Up Little Suzy constantly! Great memory of some great music!!!

I’m a boomer and I totally get it. I’m old enough to remember the Everlys from the late 1950s. They influenced so many up and coming musicians both in the US and the UK. 65 years later, their music is still fabulous. No one has ever come close to capturing the perfection of their harmonies in all those years.

Thank you for the CBS This Morning report on the legendary Everly Brothers (Don and Phil). Their brand of rockabilly music is the stuff that great musicians are made of. If the melodies capture enough attention, then one is awarded fame (let alone wealth), but if it captures more than enough attention, then one is destined for super stardom, leading to abundant recognition from peers, the public, and those willing to see accolades come to life. Don and Phil are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Although there are gone, the music they left behind remains cherished forever.

Can you imagine popular music without the Beatles? Lennon and McCartney made it pretty clear that without the Everlys, there would have been no Beatles, who in their early days sometimes referred to themselves as the Foreverly (or maybe Foureverly) Brothers. It's obvious to anyone that the Beatles stole their famous harmonies from the Everlys. They were lucky their voices happened to complement each others, like the brothers did.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Everly Brothers, I just really wish that in segments like this more recognition was given to the songwriters. "All I Have to Do Is Dream", "Bye Bye Love", "Wake Up Little Susie" and several others were written by husband and wife Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. They also wrote "Rocky Top" by the way. To be fair, The Everly Brothers did write several of their hits including "Gone, Gone, Gone (Done Moved On)," "Cathy's Clown," and "When Will I Be Loved" among many others. Side note: There are two great documentaries about session musicians out there if interested: The Wrecking Crew and Muscle Shoals.

I frequently see comment's Re: "Ahead of their time" etc.... People tend to forget WHO really was ahead of their time . REAL TRAILBLAZERS. Buddy Holly was another, not counting Elvis, Bo Diddley, Gery Lee Lewis & so many more. These were "old hat" artist's for me (!) I grew up with the Stone's & Beatles {in the UK} and for the next 20 year's, Music moved along rapidly. It seem's since the 90's and the last 30 year's, it's stalled. WHY ? An over reliance on computer's and other such wizzadry and NOT people's MIND'S ?????????????????

Both Don and Phil wrote some great songs. However, to reach a a critical mass of material, they needed Boudleaux and Felice Bryant's songs on Cadence Records, whom they left Management failed them, not changing tastes, because country rock became bigger than ever. Also, they never lost popularity in England. In hindsight, their manager should have sat them down, and offered things like the Flying Burrito Brothers. Or the Stones' "Factory Girl" and "Salt of the Earth."

@Marlena Linne I’m a white guitar player and Ro Ro is right. Listen to Chuck Berry, he came along in the same period, early 50’s and it was electrified and was well ahead of The Everly’s in terms of a rock n roll sound. There were other black musicians from the late 40’s who were also playing electric guitar but are not famous now. I get that Jason Everly is on here promoting his dad and the album, but any rock musician knows the Everly’s didn’t create rock n roll but they were part of its beginnings.
