Legendary producer Norman Lear, who changed the face of television with his classic comedies "All in the Family," "Maude" and "The Jeffersons," died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, at the age of 101. In this "Sunday Morning" profile that originally aired January 10, 2021 (when Lear was a sprightly 98), he talked with CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jonathan LaPook (Lear's son-in-law) about the importance of laughter, and social activism, in keeping him going strong.

If there was an entertainment Mt. Rushmore, Norman Lear would be at the very top. He made you laugh, think, cry, and hope for a better world. He will live on through the characters he created and dialogues he started. Norman Lear moved the ball forward in America and around the world.

He’s not joking. I truly think that a good belly laugh adds years to your life. It relieves so much stress and resets you. Thank the heavens for all the people who produce sitcoms, along with everyone else who direct, write, act… and let’s not forget all of the other behind the scenes folks who help make the production happen. I think I watched every one of his shows as a kid and learned a thing or two about us humans, as I hope others did as well.

Thank you for giving us such wonderful entertainment Mr Lear. I’m using 😂😂😂 emojis because I’m sure he’d prefer it. Growing up my favorite show was Good Times. At the time I was in it for the “ DY-NO-MITE”!! But as I grew older I realized what the show had to say about society.

A wonderfully full life. I admit it was strange watching the original British shows and a few years later seeing the exact same shows, even same scripts but with American accents.
