I found Desmond to sound bitter despite the successful career he has enjoyed as an actor in a highly competitive field of talented actors. His negative, post Vietnam experience certainly painful and deserves acknowledgment. But Norman Lears' shows allowed us (Black people) to say it like it is out loud on TV. "Step Toe and Son" wasn't written about a. Black man, but transitioned beautifully on "Sanford and Son" , because doors were opened by successful Lear productions. We need those kind of sitcoms today!

Firstly his name is Demond, not Desmond. Secondly, black veterans of the Vietnam era were subjected to the harsh racism of the country at that time. I’m sure with whatever traumatic things he may have seen over there, along with the disparities of being a black veteran had it effects on him. As being a combat vet myself, I could only imagine the stress and pain he probably suffered as a man of his age now. From what I gathered, Norman wasn’t as hands on with some of his shows as perceived. I would be “bitter” too, if someone was credited with having a hand in my success, even though he was slightly present. Mr Demond Wilson earned his stripes and should be celebrated as an TV icon

my guess is that Mr. Wilson knew that he was being invited to speak about Norman Lear. That he agreed to appear and then just talk about how he didn't know the guy.... what is that? sorry. the producers should have figured out before the interview that Wilson wanted nothing to do with this

When Wilson said Lear had nothing to do with Sanford and Son, the interviewer could’ve pivoted and asked him what he thought about his one role in All in Family-pulling a gun on Archie. It was a powerful scene in which he and Cleavon Little were smart guys who were robbing homes because of their circumstances not because they were bad guys. Little’s character recognizes that Edith is a pure spirit and returns her jewelry to her before they leave. Did Wilson agree with the sentiments expressed in that scene?

I agree the interviewer could have directed the conversation more toward the theme of Norm Lear. Also, it would have been good to review to he questions and answers beforehand, if that had not already been done. It probably would have been more beneficial to have a guest who had more of an intertwining with Mr. Lear as well. However, his allowing Mr. Wilson to answer questions according to his own experience, even going off on a slight tangent at times, yielded an eye-opening, enjoyable interview that we might not have otherwise gotten. Many condolences to the Lear family.

Thanks for the synopsis. I missed that episode. Great question. The interviewer was probably too dumbfounded by Demond's answer to his question.

@@Kdija89 I agree. There’s another great episode that doesn’t involve Wilson but Ron Glass in Everybody Tells the Truth in which a refrigerator repairman brings along a Black apprentice-Glass-and Archie, Mike, Edith and Gloria all have different recollections of how it went down. Powerful stuff.

Not to tarnish the late Norman Lear Screenwriter and producer of so many classic tv shows 📺 from the 1970s time period, one is my all time favorite “Good Times “👏🏽 I just want and stated for the ones that’s unaware the real 🐐Writer and creditor for Good Times, The Jefferson’s and Movie Cooley High is Mr. Eric Monte which is a black man that stated Norman stole his ideas for these shows, a lawsuit also took place. All the information, facts on the internet, may he rip 🕊️💪🏾🙏🏽

I totally agree with Demond Wilson when he says that shirts all over the place with 'made in Vietnam" makes no sense to him; I know if I were a combat Vietnam Veteran, I would be tremendously upset that Vietnam now has Most Favorite Nation Trading Status with the US - what was the point of the war in Vietnam, if we are going to trade with a communist country? Seems that making money, by billionaires, trumps everything, including all ideologies.
@beaujac311 Жыл бұрын
I think he is angry about Vietnam because they were over there fighting for nothing and all of this product coming from that country proves it.
@MsChisheba Жыл бұрын
He's also upset that he was over there fighting alongside other Americans and comes home only to be spat on, criticized, etc., for having fought. Then, to add insult to injury, to still be treated as a 2nd class citizen as a Black man🤬 That was, unfortunately, a VERY common experience for Black vets of the time.

Norman Lear's shows were a breakthrough and a reflection of our society that I wish television today had the BALLS to discuss! His shows encouraged conversations and dialogue as opposed to the garbage that we see today that is based on a lack of originality and that is manufactured to sell products!

I watched the very first Sanford and Son when it first premiered on NBC...and I watched it faithfully until the final show. Picked it right back up when it went into syndication and this is what I watch every night, everyday. I'll be watching it tonight along with Good Times and The Jeffersons. Sanford and Son will be my favorite show forever.

All that the host is saying is true, but that’s only one side of the coin. During his tenure on Good Times, actor John Amos openly clashed with the writers of the show, due to the scripts' lack of authenticity in portraying the African-American experience. This led to his dismissal by executive producer Norman Lear at the end of season 3 in 1976. Esther Rolle was also given resistance and a hard time in backing John Amos and almost decided to leave the cast because Norman Lear was taking an uncompromising position regarding their concerns. They’re not going to speak about that.
