Less than 1% of people who live to adulthood make it to 100, and living into your 70's in the 1800s really wasn't that uncommon. So I do not at all agree that in Buchanan's time, asking how many 70 year-olds do you know is equivalent to today asking how many centenarians one knows. But I do agree with your overrall point about more robust longevity today in general, just not that extreme. Most certainly, single and unmarried people do not, nor have ever, lived statistically longer lives than married people.
