This is a video from the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) series created by John Macdonald, Director of ProScot Rider and Driver Training Ltd. This video covers (Part 2) of Element E - This on-road practical training video focuses on how to deal with roundabouts safely including mini roundabouts. Traffic lights including filter lights. Observation and planning skills including hazard awareness. How to deal with gradients. Safe clearances and dealing with meet situations. One way streets and how to deal with bends safely. The video is designed to give riders about to attend a CBT an in-depth insight into a CBT and hopefully help the learning process and enable riders to focus more on the practical learning Elements of the CBT. The video will also help those riders sitting their Module 2 (Mod 2) bike test as the skills are directly transferable.

As an extremely nervous CBT goer, your videos have really given me a better understanding of what is going to happen plus what is expected of me and how to achieve the skills I need. Thank you so much for such in depth videos.

Hi John, I’m really enjoying your training videos, very informative and concise. I’m currently going through my IAM motorcycling observed rides and gaining good knowledge from it. I have a few years of riding under my belt but your videos are teaching me the things I thought I knew! Once I complete the course I’d like to have a day with you at some point in the near future. Excellent work John 👍

Thanks Muddy for your positive feedback. To be honest I don't really get much feedback from these videos so I never know if they are helping rider's.

Brilliant video and great commentary, thanks a lot! I know that it mostly applies to CBT course, but it seems that on Mod 2 test negotiating a mini roundabout like an instructor did on 22:40 will get at least a minor for undue hesitation, won't it?

Hi WASD43100 thanks for taking the time to give positive feedback, you're correct these videos are also very useful for the Mod 2 bike test. With regards to hesitancy at 23.40 the camera gives the impression that the vehicles are much further away than they actually are and there is more room. On that particular roundabout the rider has to negotiate a tight 90 degrees turn, but motorists approaching from the riders right have pretty much a straight run through that mini roundabout and can run through it at speed. So the rider has to anticipate a motorist going straight ahead and running over the white paint on the mini roundabout (which is very common). Of course you could say the rider can just assume that if the motorist is signaling left they must be going left. However schools should teach that this only means that the bulb is working! The rider should never assume, it could be a wrong signal or even left on from a previous manoeuvre if the rider did not see it being applied. If the motorist is far enough away that if they went straight over the roundabout and the rider still has enough time to negotiate the tight roundabout and be able to turn right without conflict then they can go. However the alternative is to wait until the wheels of the vehicle signaling left begin to turn left to reinforce the signal and intention to turn left and once the motorist commits to turn to the left that it is then time to go. However in each situation when this occured the motorists behind was then too close to the roundabout to be able to go. That is a particularly difficult roundabout and it's exactly the type of roundabout that would catch someone out in the Mod 2 bike test as they might feel they are being hesitant and panic and take a chance and pull onto the roundabout. In these situations the rider must remain calm and show restraint. Hesitancy is defined as..."When there is a safe gap to proceed or to go and the rider/driver fails to take the opportunity". However if by going or pulling out their actions cause another driver or rider to change their actions, that is to say they have had to come of the gas/close the throttle, brake or change direction then the rider/driver should not have gone. That description was in order of severity. I hope that has helped answer your question. So that's the difference between being hesitant and pulling out in front of someone. 👍 Cheers John Mac

@@proscot1982 Thanks John, that's an amazing explanation and makes a lot of sense! Also, I guess that "Undue hesitation" fault (if not made repeatedly or caused another road user to take action) is just a minor, while dashing through the mini-roundabout may well end up with serious or even dangerous fault. Thank you again!

@@WASD43100absolutely, if you're unsure it's always better to air on the side of caution and take a minor for hesitancy than to take a rush of blood to the head, panic and pull out in front of someone! Thanks for asking a really good question. John Mac
