As a counseling student, I have really appreciated your videos. I aspire to adopt your firm yet gentle way with people. I am also learning the importance and benefit of explaining all the processes as you go. Thank you for these.

I'm not a counseling student but I've been to counseling. These role plays you've made are a real blessing. I see much of myself in them. It refreshes my memory of sessions I've had. Thanks so much for making them and for sharing them.

I had never heard of behavioral activation. I really appreciated learning about how what you do, what you think, and your mood all affect each other. Thanks for teaching me new things daily Doctor Grande. Even though you are clearly very intelligent you have a way of making things still easy to understand for people like me who need someone to “dumb it down” haha but still in a compassionate and caring way.

When I managed to read an entire book after 4 years that was amazing. I felt happy and had the feeling I can read like I used to .Now its difficult again, but I hope I can finish the book I am trying to read now...I guess 10 mins to try every time would be a good goal. I couldn't focus on the whole video but kept these in my mind- 10 mins on the book ,and schedule/plan.... These videos are helpful, I wish I can see more..

I love these videos! It’s so much easier to understand these personality disorders when you have an example using role-play.

What stuck out to me the most from this session was the counselor's use of the "schedule". The client stated early on in the session that she used to read and run a lot, but she no longer did these because her depression would take over and cause her to fall asleep and quickly return home, respectively. However, the counselor carefully challenges her so that the both of them can plan a schedule of gradual behaviors. In this case, they collaborate and agree that the client will read 5 nights out of the week for about 10 minutes and also run 2 times per week for at least 30 minutes. The client also mentions that she used to go out with her fiance and other couples often but she doesn't anymore. The counselor and client agree to try going out with her fiance and the other couples once every couple weeks. I thought the counselor did a great job of then summarizing all of these planned gradual behaviors and reminding the client that sometimes life/depression would get in the way, but he encourages her to persevere and "try to push forward the next time".

This was interesting to watch. I've been in therapy for depression before and I think I would have benefited from such a clearly structured, transparent and methodical approach. But when he started to make the schedule I kept thinking that this is way too much all at once. I know if I had been the client, I would have felt overwhelmed and kinda paralyzed by the sheer thought of all those activities. Wouldn't it have made more sense to maybe start with reading five days a week and then add the running next session and so on?

That's what I thought too. More success with small goals. At least the first attempt.

Dr. Grande, what about referring the client to a psychiatrist for medication IF you assess her and determine that she is suffering from depression?
@DrGrande5 жыл бұрын
Psychiatric referrals are indicated for many mood disorder presentations. As with any case, it depends on the specific presentation.

Good role play from the past to watch while all of us women during this pandemic of all ages are being affected in not the exact same ways that all men are being affected right now and it has way more to do with double standard societal expectations of women that haven't changed all that much since the Veitnam war. Like beginning married life only a month into a university program for the very first time like what I did at age 18 which some men have to do too only they are not expected to maybe do the actual carrying around of their growing child always for 9 months at first. Decent men are still being expected to somehow make up for all the rest of the men who are not mature or decent nor will some of them in truth [instead of only superficial appeances only ever be]. Although I live in Canada my uncle Peter is from the United States and he fought in the Veitnam war. And so for example it is hard to watch my young daughter along with her husband too trying to cope with all of those double standards while I am being sidelined against my will during this pandemic because of societal pressure after we both went through a roll over car accident a year ago when thankfully her 2 babies both under age 4 were not in the car she was driving too because I know what it feels like to have been in a car accident causing a serious injury like severe whiplash [twice in a lifetime] and then 3 days later being expected to do all the things done before to care for babies including working to help care for others in home care. How can someone be expected to try again when not being allowed to instead. It seems there is too much black and white thinking in others around to not get through this without the help of a real instead of only from a virtual counsellor. I am benefiting a lot from paid for counselling sessions during which time befoe the pandemic was decl.ared my counselor encouraged me to read some books from his real library. After moving I read 2 books from the courses he took and it inspired me to look further into things like cognitive therapy while I plan for a return to school along with my youngest daughter who is hoping to at some point in the future whom I just mentioned who is aged 24 right now.
