Imagine a very young Prince watching James Brown as well as Michael Jackson both of them are definitely the dancing sons and the musical sons of James Brown in their own way.

Nobody was a better showman and dancer than James Brown. Prince, Michael Jackson and Usher. I was privileged to see James Brown in Memphis, Tn in 1966. Girls were screaming like the girls screaming at the Beatles.

You saw him in his prime! I also saw him several times between 1965 and 1969 and I always try to steer young people to his T.A.M.I. Show performance to se the best version of his show. And I like to turn young musicians on to "Live at the Apollo - 1967" to expose them to just how much of a badass he and his band were! He was a force of nature in his heyday. Lucky you!

I remember back in '64 being in a band... five white kids trying to do James Brown. Playing a teen dance at our local school we'd jump off the stage and do the splits! I found out why James always did that crazy scream! 😅😅😅

My favorite James Brown song. Creates such a cool tension and the band is so tight. This has the same groove the record has and hard to believe they replicated it.

Don't get it twisted. This is an overdubbed video. I am VERY familiar with "There Was a Time" from the "Live at the Apollo - 1967" album (released in '68) 'cause we played it to death when I was in high school. That's the audio you're listening to on this video. Also, I saw this particular performance on "Late Night" and, as good as Schaefer, Bullock & Co.were, the TV studio audio was lame as hell, nowhere near as good as on the album recording. Maybe that's why somebody felt the need to overdub it (poorly, I might add). They cut it off just before Brown does The Groovemaker ("Hey Hey, I feel alright...") with the Appollo audience. If you listen to all the videos of "There Was A Time" on KZbin, it's all the same track, from the original album recording. It's not "hard to believe they replicated it" because they didn't! If you doubt my words, download the (GREAT) double-album "Live at the Apollo 1967" and enjoy the ride! And if you're a true G, download his "Live at the Apollo 1962" album. And if you REALLY wanna see JB dance, look up his explosive, 17-minute performance on The T.A.M.I. Show (1964). That's the "hardest working man in show business" in his prime, before he wrecked his knees dancing so hard. This "Late Night" appearance in 1982 was almost 20 years later...

@@craigj.8539 I love the record, period. Next, The Apollo is good, but it's long, or would be great. It's good because the guitar, bass, and drums keep the same beat and don't stray from the same groove as the record. The Letterman show is just so-so. I'm not your G man, and I don't care about ad-lib lyrics or most shouts or shout-outs; keep it like the record with little variation. Does nothing for me but waste my time, take my time, and annoy me. I don't need "huh, let me have it, Babe Babeee, hu hu, come on now" in the song, for example. Just the more minimal shouts and "dig this," but don't overdo or make it 10 minutes long. Very few long records or jams I'm not usually into unless it's Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand" or Boz Scaggs Loan Me A Dime, His 14-minute version of "Loan Me a Dime" written by Fenton Robinson has Duane Allman playing spectacular guitar riffs. Boz's singing, expressing remorse over his lost love, is great. What an improvement over Fenton's. A Muscle Shoals bluesy organ with horns and piano swing into a great jam. I am not into funk, except for this song and a few exceptions when it's cool and subtle. I don't like funk, hip-hop, or rap. I love Tyrone Davis' "Can I Change My Mind?" That's the funk I like, and the lyrics are so haunting.
