The really interesting thing about prisons is that they're kind of timeless. Sure, there are slight modifications here and there, but for the most part, aside for perhaps the installation of a new surveillance system or method of further ensuring less risk of escape, they are devoid of most modern technology. To present day, they are giant walls, fences, barbwire, and cells. The convicts wear the same kind of clothes even. I suppose they allow certain inmates to use computers/iPads, etc. but they are severely restricted still. And they are certainly not allowed to carry around cellular phones. You can look at a modern video recording of prison and its operation from the 80s and from modern day, and if the difference in video quality from the 1980s compared to present day was nonexistent, it would be virtually impossible to tell the difference in the era.

And also as he said the peace and quiet of a book or chess. But the comradery amongst your certain group of people. Yes you could do all that outside but while on the Inside all that has to be made bearable. Yes you can miss walking the yard doing pull-ups with the homies. Playing some very competitive games of basketball with the homies or running the handball court all day and no one can take you off. Playing scrabble as an 18 year old kid I was with the lifer old time homies who been down longer than I been alive Tomas Ernie and Shakes. Yeah that can be missed. It’s not like we are saying we would want to be there. But we remember these times in our lives and we don’t take out present for granted.

@TGP 777 there are things u miss ,, but id rather be free but its like alot of things in life as time goes by and things get deeper into the past u tend to remember good times and most people had a goodtime or 2 in prison ,,,, another thing is prison is not like what most people think ,, its not a savage rat infested cell block and being in a cage all day , ya that is possible to be in one of those places but most prisons are like a college campus except u cant leave ,,, and your allowed out of your cell pretty much all day and can watch tv , play cards, some units have pool tables n ping pong tables,, u can goto yard and thats like going to the park there are picnic tables ,, u can walk the yard track for excercise ,, goto the weight pit to lift weights they have library and more ,,, really for lots of people its better than they had it in the world but its hard on your family if u have a family,,,,,,,, but think about this for a second , the way the system is your in prison right now just the lowest security and thats what people realize the first time they get locked up , its that easy to lose freedom and be in the right too ,,, there are lots of guys who shot a intruder but because they stepped out the front door instead of waiting til the intruder came in are in prison thats just one example of how freedom is fragile , its there and gone in a second

Some of the best stories we tell in life are the ones punctuated with tragedy and bookended by bad decisions. If I spent upwards of half my life in a system, made most of my friends and family in that system, and established myself as a man there, then yeah, I'll oddly look back on some of those times fondly for making me who I am. Sometimes it is just false bravado, though, I'll give you that.

Some of these guys got a sense of structure and guidance they never had. Based on this ignorant statement I think it would be safe to assume you were provided for fairly well as a child. Just imagine not having a single adult figure in your life. I'm not saying it's ok anyone went to prison. All I'm saying is this: I never had steady meals, a routine or a clue about how to take care of myself until I went to basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia. People said it was hell and everyone was so happy to graduate. I felt like crying because I wasn't sure if there would be 3 hots and a cot where I was going.
