I once heard it said that Jacob plays his voice like an instrument, and I really think that’s the best description of his singing I’ve ever heard.

Gregory Porter is one of my favorite singers and I didn't think I'd see him with Jacob Collier. For his part, Jacob Collier is undoubtedly one of the best musicians of recent times. I think that since Stravinsky or Piazzola someone like that has not been seen.

Miles Davis? Keith Jarrett? Bill Evans? John Coltrane? There have been many great musicians since Stravinsky to match this level of musicianship and vision
@lazulicdm Жыл бұрын
@@piotrzdunek7282they are definitely phenominal but there is a dangerously small border between what makes a musician flawless and what makes them legendary, I think that's what's in discussion here. All of those will go down in history, but there's a different caliber here. Almost complete mastery of such a multitude of instruments, the ability to write for every one on the planet, and pretty much entirely self taught, and he's barely older than the youngest professionals in the field right now, all while competing with modern billboard artists and winning grammy after grammy. A mastery of musical ability vs. an aptitude of the musical language

@@lazulicdm jacob would say john and miles are better. miles ahead ;), the factors of being a great musician is not only about skill (which jacob MORE than has) but also influentiality and songwriting. i personally think for that reason they are better. the songs and musicianship are a whole other level. jacob (at this age) is a little bit of a show off, and tends to lean for the hardest possible things in music, (which ofc miles and john etc also did) but they didnt utilise it in their songs. simplicity is nearly always better than extreme complexity as it contains a form of beauty and catchiness you just cant get with playing the bebop scale at 218 bpm. i however do think that jacob is scarily good and will only become better and mature later in his career. at that point, he probably will be better than the greats.

3:44, what in the world was that? He sings from that deep to all the way up that high?! That is amazing.
@agnidas5816 Жыл бұрын
and how deep is it ? he missed the note lol. that a B2 or there abouts... typical error of people who cannot sing low but try - they just change the timbre and not the note. Gregory was half an octave lower and then he goes up to fourth octave ... so 2 octave range is actually pretty weak - but most songs don't call for more... it rarely sound good anyway.
@Bebop_2962 Жыл бұрын
@@agnidas5816 Collier and Porter have wildly different approaches to singing. Collier tends to be very clean with his notes, Porter tends to be a bit more free and hovering in both tonality as timing. There is a strong difference in how they are shaping their notes, it is however the same F2 note. Jacob then does a run up to D5, making it 2,5 octaves, but it's a bit silly to assume that this is his total range... Or to make a point about his range, because who cares. It's perfectly fine to prefer Porter over Collier. They're both quite individual and therefore slightly polarizing musicians, but music isn't a contest.

gotta say.. This is two geniuses.. doing each of their thing, each on their own. I think it sounds a lot like they haven't rehearsed much together. Not taking any talent away from either, but the combination doesn't work right here, I think.
@Bebop_29623 жыл бұрын
Both artists enjoy improvising. It's quite rare for them to duplicate a performance. Clearly they've rehearsed enough. There's still a bit of exploration and a slight bit of tension as is ok with improvisation. It all comes together and I really enjoy the different textures their styles and voices bring.

Gregory Porter wore the hat to hide some scalp injuries, and he hasn't been seen in public without it since. He might feel uncomfortable since he had surgery and had to wear a hat, but now that his injury has healed, he might appear normal wearing a hat. The hat is a Kangol Summer Spitfire with a strap that has been adjusted.
