Right? You've got all you're going to say, you don't stutter or trip over words at all, and you think you did great. But then you realize that it's a school computer microphone, most likely, and it completely sucks because it dubs your voice down by a couple of octaves. This happens every time. Every... Time.

@@Monke-fj2qz I cannot agree enough! Something about American hand-drawn cel animation motivated an ambitious aspiration to greatness that is far less common in American animation today. _Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse_ shows some of that greatness, as does the stop motion studio Laika, but most of it I see these days comes from foreign studios, like Studio Ghibli and Cartoon Saloon.

3 voice actors could pull it off, if they have the right range and variety. Sadly, most voice actors can't seem to do more than like 2 voices, maybe 3 tops. So, you're looking at a game 6-10 total voices unless you shell out for some good talent, at which point you might as well just hire some more voice actors.

Laura Bailey talked about the difficulties in dubbing anime in her Between the Sheets episode. It’s hard to get exactly the same emotion and intonation as the Japanese version because you are forced into a certain timing. These line time constraints are obviously not present in recording the original. Translation can really screw up how long it actually takes to convey a given idea. I don’t watch dubs, but I respect the voice actors a lot.

With the JoJo acting, I think the main difference between the Japanese and English is that the Japanese actor sounds almost unhinged, like he's bordering on totally losing his shit while trying to maintain his collected manor. The English actor focuses too much on being collected, and you lose those manic tones. He legitimately sounds like someone who will kill you if you blink wrong in the Japanese version.
@Chaotix05

I think Dio in the Japanese also sounds self-aware in a way. Dio knows he's a villain and he thorougly enjoys it. It's also like Dio could burst into laughter any time, because how ridiculous he is. Yep I agree with OP. You know, I wish when you talked about Mustang's voice acting in the scene where he kills Envy, you had also talked about Envy's voice acting. I don't know about the English performance, but the Japanese performance is AMAZING! Envy is usually so smug, so hearing them retain their sense of "Haha, I'm above you!" While also screaming in pain is amazingly terrifying, and it's even more heartwrenching when they finally break down and can do nothing but scream in pain. Then, when they turn into the worm, it's amazing because they go back to that pained but smug sound for a while, but so, SO diminished, until the very end. That's part of what broke me in that scene, tbh.

6:24 Something to note about Mark Hamill that I think you might've glossed over, is that he helped pioneer this idea of acting in the recording booth while others were just reading their lines. A lot of stories about Hamill in the booth would always talk about how he'd get up from his seat and emote actively as he was speaking his lines, to really sell the point that he was this maniacal crime lord and such... and these stories often were spoken in awe as if this wasn't the norm at the time.

I acknowledge that dubs usually aren’t as good as the original subtitles, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have any value. For me personally, the dubs have infinitely more value than the subs, even if the dub is objectively worse.

Great picks all around! And as FFXV is one of my favorite games, I too love all of the voices BUT...absolute amazing kudos to Ray Chase. I have yet to have heard him in his original voice trials but they said he made Noctis sound like Batman, lol! But that's not Noct's character and they very nearly cast someone else. The man managed to redeem himself with redoing the voice, making Noct sound more like a 20 year old (though higher pitched than his regular voice). What a save! And that, folks, is why you need range when you act, lol. I'm so happy he sealed the role because now he and Robbie Daymond are the best of friends and do a lot of conventions together...so you're often getting a double dose of Noctis and Prompto :) (Robbie also has a KZbin channel, if anyone is curious).

@@ocernia1895 i weirdly agree with both of you. I actually would recommend anyone who wants to go into voice acting to take theatre workshops/classes because theatre acting focuses a lot on projecting your voice and how you deliver a line as you want people way in the back and higher levels with a poor view of the stage to get the same emotions even if they can't see your character's body language. I think depending on the actor and what type of acting they do it can either be easy or hard to do supremely high quality voice acting work, its all highly variable. I personally feel a lot of beginner VAs would benefit highly from doing theatre or doing pantomimes (dont know how common those are outside of the UK but they have an energy i think translates really well into especially anime voice acting, especially villainous roles lol) Sorry for any bad english mistakes, or rambling!
@DerAstrophysikerr
@DerAstrophysikerr 4 жыл бұрын
@@ocernia1895 Honestly, whenever I listen to e.g. Hollywood movies in English (as a non-native speaker), I feel like SO MANY ACTORS are just mumbling their words to themselves and don't really know what to do with their voice, how to deliver their lines. To me, this was especially apparent in some of the Marvel movies. I LOVE Robert Downey Jr. as an actor, for example, but I think he is a good example of somebody who is very much mumbling, not clearly delivering his lines, at least at times. I say this because in Germany, movies usually are synchronized, so I get to hear these versions with (more or less) "proper" voice actors behind the characters, and I find myself liking the German performance better than their English original counterparts often times, as ridiculous as that may sound. An example that came to my mind was actually Jack Sparrow - don't get me wrong, I think Johnny Depp did a really good job with the whole "drunken pirate" feeling, but I feel like the German version is ever so slightly more over the top, more... smug. Maybe try to listen to this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5SkmX-BhsyJjLc Or here, a scene from the YuGiOh anime in German (to be fair, this is not a comparison actor-voice actor, but still): kzbin.info/www/bejne/poSml2lmgKZ2aLs Maybe it's just me being used to hearing the German versions. But I do think many Hollywood actors should really work a little bit more on their voice and how well they can be understood.

I don't think either one is harder then the other I personally think they have their own special difficulties that do make them different from one another though. With screen acting you have to be aware of your body language as well as your voice and with voice acting you're relying solely on your voice to get your emotions across. It's all acting but they're different enough that when approaching both you have to use different skill sets for each.
