I recall Mr. Surjit Bhalla used to criticize BJPs Economic policies. After seeing him doing this the Majboot Sarkar appointed him as World Bank Director a year ago and he now praises the government’s economic policies! Similarly, the newly appointed CDS was on the GOI’s radar after the unfortunate death of Bipin Ji nine months ago. BJP which used to criticize Dr. Manmohan Singh government on policy paralysis/delay in decision making, newly appointed CDS seems to have withdrew his articles readied for publication in your magazine! It is the habit of BJP to appoint few Yuvapidis in other words juniors overtaking seniors and defense minister is a rubber stamp! In our country almost all airports are controlled by the Adani group where is the guarantee that he will continue to take the services of CISF?! It is true that BJP/RSS always looks cross boarder terrorism as the reason for all our intranational borders disputes!! With negligible knowledge on defense, I feel that it is better not to have CDS at all because turnaround time on “coordination” itself is resolved on a daily basis and these “jointness” is the syndrome at the backdrop of our PM/NSA/EAM attending international meetings on every alternate day! Jointness is showcased to show how the Indian Administration is maintaining good foreign relationships under QUAD, IPEF, SOC, G7, G20, BRICS, we are in all and sundry such clubs. Further the so-called surgical strikes have been happening under our defense forces since independence and it is not new using air force. This time appointing CDS from Air Force would have been better against the backdrop of autonomous AI based weaponry, electronic warfare/electromagnetic domain, cyber outer space spectrums /space system, undersea defense systems as you have explained and I feel not with Russian Junk. Ukraine Russian war exposed Russian junk capabilities! Yes PLA has visualized the entire ware zone like arena which we read about it in Ramayana and Mahabharata while our administration is interested in cross border terrorism lecturing all around. Creating Virtual domains fields need lot of funds which we do not have because pensions, salaries and freebies of all kinds leaves very little for Defense Budget. Agnipaath is going to be a disaster for the five years. Your conclusion is nearly perfect.

FYI, they have already done the shift from CISF to private security and that basically ensues no accountability and no leakage of how many drugs pass through. It has been during the last 20 odd years that Gujarat became a major point for drug trade and local people know it and suffer from it but Govt. keeps silent. That is the reason why no medical infrastructure even in the last 20 odd years. Sucheta Dalal had shared about gift city in Gujarat just a week back. Have a look at that.

Further in my humble opinion posted it is clear that that our Pradhan Sevak fails to mention the names of our enemy nations in his readout speeches in the international fora and andhe bhaktas call it master stroke and servile retired bureaucrats’ terms it sensible! Of late our EAM developed six pack muscle and started to issue strong statements against one and all and he happens to be longest serving four and a half years as an Ambassador to China! I had a question.. while I agree to a large extent to what you said basis facts and figures, I felt you have made certain assumptions where I did not find any relevant evidence attached to them .. for example - You said India’s response for URI in the form of surgical strike was a low level counter terrorism operation.. Can you explain how did you conclude a counter terrorism operation on enemy soil a low level operation ? How many terror camps we destroyed. ? How many we killed there ? And if you can provide the figures, please mention the authenticity of such figures so that we know it is not just any imaginative figure .. - You also said during UPA regime bigger strikes happened !! Can you give any example of our soldiers or Air Force crossing the border and attacking enemies.. ?

Spot on, not sure if you are a civ or an AF pers, but seems you picked the holes, rightly in the analysis. As a retired mil pers, let me add, there have been wars, and operations as part of these wars. These cannot be classified as Surgical strikes. For some civilians it is hard to follow, who get carried away by parts of the analysis that may be right. There is no denying that with a CDS, the coordination between all 3 services would be better. Hair splitting of jointness and coord etc, seems infructous. Army pers would be better for counter terrorism. Anyway as for CDS to be by rotation from the 3 svcs, is silly, should be purely on competence or who meet the QR for the times in a changing world.

The reality is China very well knows that it will get a bloody nose if it tries to enter into India. It is one thing to have capabilities on paper and another to actually use them on ground. Moreover you need to have experienced and hardened soldiers to fight wars. Not college going students who serve for 3-4 years to finance their studies. Moreover communists governments are always known for their propaganda. USSR (and now Russia) is a very good example. At end of cold war when mist cleared everyone could see that military capabilities boasted by USSR was just propaganda.

The way you draw out inferences from the series of actual events and statements form political and military leadership, is amazing. The apprehensions presented by you about the about the China's capabilities on electronic warfare, informatics, reconnaissance and advanced weapons seem to be real. The role of infantry, direct conflicts and conventional weapons is getting gradually limited. If India is so far behind China then what are they waiting for? China could go ahead and take Tawang and Arunachal Pradesh (South Tibet) from India. If India lacks in all these domains and China will be fighting war at operational/strategic level and not at tactical level then it should be cakewalk for China. In 1971, Pakistan attacked first by attacking 11 indian air force bases on 3 Dec 1971 And for 1965, Pakistan attacked kashmir thinking India was too weak after 1965. Just to give Pakistan taste of its own medicine, India opened at Lahore front which stopped Pakistan from going further. Everything is fair in love and war

I have read in one of article written by someone from Retired Airforce Air marshal which wrote in a newspaper article I forgotten his name but what he wrote clearly indicated that he vowed for a CDS post for a candidate from among 4* rank Army Navy Airforce chiefs which just going to be retired & the selected CDS must be given 5* rank and he should not just be a rubber stamp first among equals.. I don't know what to say on this but CDS post still a new one among top echelons of indian military services headquarters & is a bridge between MoD & 3 services headquarters.. Therefore there will be definitely some pros cons attached to it that will be sorted out in the down the line in coming medium future

The Secretary to the GOI is NOT senior to the Service Chiefs..only the Cabinet Secretary is..hence as Secretary Department of Military Affairs, Lt Gen Chauhan is junior to the Service Chiefs ..this appointment must not be with the CDS..this should be headed by a serving Lt Gen..at present its all Khichdi made in a hurry..if they want an effective CDS, he should be a 5 Star General or alternatively remove his uniform as he has no operational role and command over the Chiefs..ajb

It took me and several other people to point out that nobody is going to sell such algos to them and even if they sell something, it would be junk. The term white elephant comes to mind. The concept of jointness was also considered by the navy under Suresh Mehta - perhaps some military chiefs found value there? The discussion took place a long time ago, over a decade ago. Coordinated attacks can also include jointness - perhaps with a different budget structure? Can American AND Israeli technology in artificial intelligence be used by India as a formal Non-NATO partner of the Americans? Both countries are far more experienced in actual combat and more competent militarily than China. And communication jamming / denial is not so easy because there is no magic here. Indian communication systems are pretty diverse AND sophisticated. The Chinese artificial intelligence preparation is NOT proven, their training including air force flight hours is way behind India. They have poor geographical conditions and India also has been able to use American intelligence and reconnaissance to preemptively block at least one Chinese operation and DENY the Chinese a win. Perhaps you are overstating the Chinese capability?

I say this clearly. At the national level, we just need some good strategic planners who’d decide which service is to deliver what. Once that is clear, the service will deliver, without any major involvement of the other two. Jointness is madness. And, of course, we lack good strategic planners that Ive mentioned above. If the PMO office is to direct day to day operations, nothing will work. When we don’t come even have a National Security Doctrine, this step is just a fanciful term, like many others.

Impressive for a civilian to make the analysis on AF aspects. However, seems more politically loaded than, with hard mil facts. As a longtime retired mil pers, with no axe to grind, let me add, there have been wars, and operations as part of these wars. However, such ops cannot be classified as Surgical strikes. The strikes sure were surgical strikes, and we need more such strikes at time and place of our choosing, rather than long drawn out wars, that are an economic drain on both men and material. Derail from the agenda of India rising to its exalted status. For the not so savy , word Surg strike itself should ring bells. For some civilians it is hard to follow, but get carried away by parts of the analysis that may be right, like being from same Regt, or from Garwhal etc. However, it is not as loathsome as dynastly politics, or parochialism witnessed elsewhere. Hard to appreciate for civs. Hard to explain, but give it a try, that competence of your regimental officers is better known, Gorkha regt is anyway tops.... hence the bias . There is no denying that with a CDS, the coordination between all 3 services would be better. Hair splitting of word jointness and coord etc, seems infructous. As for current times, Army pers would be better, to tackle counter terrorism, a significant issue.
