After having the leather pieces already cut and laying over the foam material the next step would be to get them ready for last assembling or sewing.
A first sewing of short stitches goes along and very close to the edge...it is advisable a thin needle(110=18) and thin standard upholstery thread (number 8 = 92)...after this first sewing, trim the foam leftover.
To ease the final 'closing sewing', a second sewing (short stitches, thin needle and thread) should should go at a distance of 8 mm from the edge...clear thread on top and a clash color on the reverse side...this line of stitches would be the 'guide' for the last 'closing sewing'. An 'overlock serger sewing machine' could do this job instead. It means my 'last closing sewing' would be 10 mm thick.
We also would realize how important are the 'reference marks' to ease the sewing procedure...these points should meet one in front of the other. For educational purposes and ease the sewing procedure I am again using staples to 'baste' the edges of my pieces. If i would work in a factory doing the same everyday, perhaps I would not use the staples, just following 'V notches' would be more than enough.
For the final 'closing sewing' I have used the same 110 needle and 92 thread. For the 'double stitches/french seams' I have used a 180=24 needle and a thick thread (double zero), if I am right equivalent to 207.
I could say again, an upholsterer is like a tailor but in a rougher way.
I hope you find this video useful!
