The statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College has been at the epicentre of debates surrounding Britain’s imperial past.
To some, he is an inspiring pioneer and philanthropist.
To others, he represents everything wrong with colonialism.
To discuss the life and controversies of Rhodes, Steven Edginton sat down with Nigel Biggar for the latest episode of the History Defended podcast.
Watch the full episode above or listen on your podcast app by searching “History Defended”.

@@ncubesays The Matabele were a Zulu offshoot who arrived in what is now Zimbabwe as late as 1840 by conquest over the local Shonas. If I remember correctly, the Matabele called neighbouring Shonas "Maswina", which I think may mean "carrion people".

That argument that the Europeans had a right to mine Africa's resources because they had the equipment needed to get the minerals is absolutely bonkers, it's like me saying because I have a shovel and my neighbor doesn't I therefore have a right to dig for gold in their yard because I have the equipment they do not as of yet possess.
