There’s an older comment here saying that this “simulates being in the womb” which is certainly a valid interpretation to make but doesn’t address the feeling of eeriness some may also experience. I think, especially if you’re already very familiar with the song, gives you almost an otherworldly glimpse of listening to yourself listening to this song. When you’re listening to the song as intended you’re on your own track of time which follows the typical terrain of the musical landscape, always glad to find in their proper places the things that bring you pleasure, your associations and connections to the song given their time and focus to strengthen and become more rewarding/gratifying to you. The song is in fact one thing in itself but your relationship to the song morphs it into something personal and unique to you, every tone in the musical fabric enriched by what meaning you’ve come to discover in it over time. When the song starts “playing from another room”, you might properly be able to say you are now beside yourself. The song is no longer talking to you as before (but you aren’t necessarily being ignored). The scope of the music, before being something chartable and definable, now roams out into the space beyond you, inaccessible to you. The song is this way grows alien, impersonal, reveals itself for the objective artifact independent of all your heart-etched relations, as an empty room free of your personal effects. I don’t know if I want to necessarily say it’s any early form of ego death. You still want to hold your personal associations as valuable and meaningful. But you do become phenomenologically aware that there is an ocean of difference between what you feel and what others feel (and perhaps deep dark seas beyond- the “true” world). From here you get to see and understand your separation from the world stemming from the honest marvel of your own self-consciousness. But consciousness separates everyone from themselves so everyone becomes their own island even if they share the same seas of confusion. So you do yourself no good running away from your own self consciousness no matter how much fear you find in how it isolates you. Love and understanding are what will let you understand the idiosyncratic languages of others.

This reminds me of my youth. I got sent to bed while my parents had friends over. The music was too loud and the laughter drifting up from downstairs was too loud. How could I sleep when everyone else was having so much fun?
@lil.glimmers6 жыл бұрын
Maybe one of the reasons why these videos are so calming is because it simulates being in the womb, where you're safe and warm and all loud noises are muffled Just a theory

Used this while rereading the first chapter of Ellis' Rules of Attraction; it's a harrowing, brutal, horrible scene, but the description of it happening while "Dire Straits or maybe it was Talking Heads were playing downstairs" makes it all the more evocative

Or make a video that plays out like a party. you get out of your car, the music is pretty distant but the closer you get the louder it gets. And the sound of footsteps echos until you open the door to the party and people talking and dancing and singing, the music is louder and bass boosted when you open the door. and as you make your way through, as you get closer to the stage the music gets louder and then more distant as you go the the bathroom, wash your hands, then head to the back of the club were someone is crying, but you just sit out there, smoking and puffing till the song ends.

It’s 1983 the love of your life left you. You try so hard to find someone else. You haven’t found luck anywhere and decide to move. You end up moving far from where you came. You continue your search to no avail. You decide it’s time to head back home and you find her.
